Making a Cake, Take 57

September 2nd, 2010 @ 6:17 pm by Mrs. Sand Dollar

Okay, so if you haven’t been keeping up, I tried to make a test wedding cake using the new Cricut Cake. Super fail. So now, I’m testing out this whole Rice Krispies cake concept. Overall, I’d say my first attempt was a super success, and I see no reason why we shouldn’t be able to have a crazy cute cake on our wedding day.

I just popped on a little lace I had leftover from another project, and it looked alright. It wasn’t exactly the feel I was going for, and was a bit too tall.

It actually looks pretty cute! I had to use my slow-cooker bowl to make the mold, and you can tell it’s a little bit slanted due to the fact that the sides aren’t straight. Here’s a close up of the ribbon and “cake”:

I wanted to test out the freshness factor, since many commented that the cake has the potential to get pretty hard and difficult to cut. I plan to refrigerate it after I make it the day before, then display it, open-air, when we set things up—probably around 6ish when the groom’s cake makes its debut. Though it should only have about 2 hours of “open air” time, I left it out overnight to really check things out. And it was perfect! I cut out a slice with a knife, and my FSIL and I taste tested it. Approved!

So, how do I solve the shape issue? Well, I was brainstorming with my FMIL, and she came up with the idea of those cardboard hat boxes from Hobby Lobby. And whaddya know, they’re 30% off this week! So for about eight bucks, we came home with two boxes, perfectly shaped for a wedding cake. I also bought two rolls of red bandanna ribbon, and popped on a few extra butterflies to make a mock-up of the real thing.

Hooray! It doesn’t look like a third grader made it! Just pretend the brown box is delicious Rice Krispies treats, and we’re good to go. I absolutely adore it. I love the addition of the butterflies, and how the ribbon is so cute and country. It’s totally going to fit in, and look fab doing it!

Are you planning on having an alternative cake? What will it be made of?

OMG- love the rice crispy cake idea too! Going to have to try that for my husband’s next birthday since he’s not a real cake fan.

That’s a really great idea! the red bandana ribbon looks perfect.

We’re doing cheesecake w/ toppings placed at each table. We’re not cake people but love us some cheesecake.

Cute! You can also use food coloring to make the crispies look festive. I tried to do red and green for Christmas, but they came out pink and mint :)

Ooooo, you are really going for it, that’s excellent! It’ll look fantastic based on your mock up. It’s great that you tested it for flavor - you are thorough!

That looks sweet! How are you going to get the cakes out of the boxes? I’m sure you are going to line them somehow but I’m curious as I love the Rice Krispy cakes (I’ve seen them a few times before) and I am thinking of having a small one at our Ice Cream Sundae/dessert bar. I can’t wait to see how it all comes out!

I went to a wedding in January with a Rice Crispy cake. They added peanut butter and chocolate to it, so I could either get one or the other. It was pretty good and completely unexpected.

Thanks everyone! I love the suggestions for colors and flavors. I think I’m gonna keep it simple though, just plain jane rice krispies. I kind of don’t want to jinx it after how hard it’s been getting a DIY cake done!

The mock-up is great! If you don’t already have one, you should make one like this for your card box!
