We are two self-professed nerds with an affinity for all things outdoors---be it rain, snow or shine. Recently relocated from the drizzly Northwest, we're enjoying the many sun-soaked days in the mile high city. Our day will be filled with both of our large families and friends, a self-served Cajun feast, and a Zydeco-style jazz band rocking beneath the beams of a historic red barn.

A Tale of Two Fathers

September 2nd, 2010 @ 4:22 pm by Mrs. Husky

I am very fortunate to have three amazing men in my life—Mr. Husky, my father, and my stepfather. Mama Husky married Step-Husky during my middle school years, and over time we have grown very close. Daddy Husky and I have stayed close throughout my lifetime, despite living many hundreds of miles away from one another. So when it came time for their little girl to get married, I wanted to find a way to honor them both.

When I was in high school, I had to create a sort-of scrapbook for my senior psychology class. Each week, we were asked a different question (where do you see yourself in five years, what’s your biggest fear, etc.), and we had to write an essay response. At the end of the year, all of the questions were collected in a book, and it became a representation of who and what we all were at that time in our lives. As an addition to that assignment, we had to request letters from various friends & family members. The outlines were non-specific; it simply needed to be a letter directed to the student. Some included advice, some nostalgia, and some humor. Step-Husky’s included a little bit of it all. Even now, many years later, I cannot read the letter in its entirety without tearing up. He is quite adept at eloquently arranging his words to be heartfelt and meaningful.

I didn’t want to take anything away from my dad, but I needed a way to show my love and appreciation for Step-Husky as well. So, we asked him to officiate. Colorado is one of only two states (the other is Pennsylvania) that allow couples to “self solemnize”—meaning, we can sign our marriage certificate ourselves, without needing an ordained minister or judge. Step-Husky will speak at the ceremony, and lead us through our vows. We will self-solemnize the certificate, and he will sign as a witness. Perfect!

Did you have to get creative with ways to honor members of your family? How are you including people in your wedding without stepping on others’ toes?

I am very lucky that my dad and step-dad are very friendly and respectful of each other. So I will have the privilege of both, my dad and step-dad will be walking me down the isle. I will also be doing 2 father daughter dances, where i will surprise each of them with a song that is very special to me.

I heard about this self-solemnizing from a Penn bride and I think its really interesting. Did you know it started from a Quaker tradition? I think you’re including Step-Husky in a great way, Mr. G’s brother is doing our ceremony!

I’m much closer to my stepfather than my birth father, but I wanted to include both in my ceremony. My stepfather is walking me down the aisle. During the ceremony, I’m doing a Rose Ceremony, which is a way to honor parents during the wedding. Both Mr. 5642 and I will present roses to our parents (2 for him; 4 for me). Each rose also has a small scroll attached with special words just for that parent.

I’m also doing 2 father-daughter dances at the reception. It’s always a bit of a challenge to juggle family roles in the wedding, and I’ve been very lucky that everyone has been respectful and gracious about my decisions.

Our stories sound exactly the same, all the way down to the the resolution! For a while I toyed with the a number of ideas, including: having them both walk me down the aisle.. two father/daughter dances.. but ultimately I decided this was the best way of honoring them and making sure they’re both comfortable. Have you asked Step Husky to do the honors yet? I know when I do, my stepfather isn’t going to be able to keep a dry eye!

Also, I love Jennifer5642’s Rose Ceremony idea. Beautiful!
