Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Making Myself Look Purdy

September 3rd, 2010 @ 3:28 pm by Mrs. Hippo

I am definitely not an expert when it comes to makeup application, but I think my skills are pretty decent. I guess my friends think I’m pretty decent too ’cause I have done makeup at five of my friends’ weddings, including spiffing up the bride and mother of the bride (which is a little stressful, I must say). I figure if my friends are confident enough in my makeup skills for their special day, then I should be too. And so I’ve decided to save some cash by not hiring a makeup artist for the wedding. I love the classic, “bride getting her makeup done” photos, but I suppose those will have to be sacrificed.

I definitely could use some advice from a professional when it comes to color selection, and my makeup supply is in need of a little help anyway, so my plan is to schedule an appointment at the MAC store for a full-on revamp. I’m hoping to absorb everything I can during the appointment so I can work some magic for my engagement shots and recreate the look for the wedding. I’d love to be able to pull off something along these lines:

I love that the eyes pop, but aren’t too overdone and the little bit of shimmer in the lip color. I’m sure the fact that these women are gorgeous with perfect skin has NOTHING to do with it!

Anyone else planning on doing their own wedding day makeup? Did you learn any tips at a makeup consultation you can share?

Yes. Practice. Get the idea you want, get the exact brands and styles of makeup you will use and practice many times ahead of the big day! I’m doing my own makeup as well (and doing another bride’s makeup at her wedding tomorrow!) and the practice with the exact makeup has helped me tremendously.

And yeah, talk about beautiful - Zoe and the QUEEN! :)

I think “bride doing her makeup” can be equally gorgeous photos :)

These are great looks! Be sure to post some trials here so we can ooh and ahhh!

I am doing my own too! I need to stock up on some new stuff though and figure I can ask the consultant for recommendations.

I went to a Lancome counter and got my colors done. Then bought everything except eye shadow. When my SIL did my make-up, she used something to make the foundation stay longer. It worked and I need to ask her what it was. My make-up looked so great, I just wanted to constantly look in the mirror.

Oh, both of your inspirational photos are beautiful. Your own (icon) photo is absolutely gorgeous too, so I’m sure it won’t be very difficult getting a little extra spiffy on the wedding day.

@Mary: Mary, you are my new best friend! My mom has great skin, so I guess I inherited some of that gene. But, I have been having some random breakouts lately, which is super annoying! Argh..

@TheFutureMcBride: Yes! Please let us know what the magical stay longer makeup potion is!

Huge fan of both those make up styles, I’m struggling between how to wear makeup but not too much since I rarely wear makeup in regular life.

I am going to MAC before my engagement shoot to have my make up done. You have to buy $50 worth of product if they do your make up there so I figure I’ll get a lot of new stuff that I’ll be able to use on the wedding day. FH aunt used to be a make up artist and so she is going to do my make up on the wedding day. She is amazing! She did FSIL/MOH make up on her wedding day and it looked AWESOME. I’m excited to see what they do at the MAC counter in a few weeks.

I’m doing my own makeup too! My friends are glam queens and our wedding is casual. It’s a great way to save money!

Yep - go to MAC. I’m planning to do my own too, and have been to the MAC pro store. Will go again shortly before the wedding for color matching since I tan so easily. Like others have said, it helps to practice. Also this post may help: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/01/23/ace-your-face-pt-1/ and part 2: http://www.weddingbee.com/2010/01/28/ace-your-face-pt-2-contouring/

@TheFutureMcBride: Was it primer? USE PRIMER, ladies! Whether it’s specifically a makeup primer or just a good moisturiser; your foundation will stay on so much better with something other than bare skin to stick to.

i do a pretty good job of my makeup but i can never get it to last more than like 4hrs or so! so i think i’m going to have it done! my group of friends and i are really “girly”, like our makeup collection rivals boutiques and what not, so i might have one of them do it for me!

Yes, I second PRIMER. I have an eye makeup primer by the brand Too Faced, which you can get online or at Sephora and Ulta. It totally keeps eye shadow in place until you wash it off — no creasing. MAC probably has an eye primer as well.

I think its great that you are doing your own makeup!! You can never go wrong getting help with from the ladies at the MAC store. Im a coward so Im getting one of my friends who is a makeup artist to do mine for me. Thats how Im saving money.
I was online and I saw a product called Model In a Bottle. It appreared on Oprah, Tyra Banks, and Reggie Wells’ Show. I figure if it was on these shows it must really work. It is a matte finish setting spray that holds foundation and eye makeup in place throughout the day and night. So now you wouldn’t have to worry about your makeup coming off when you start down on the dance floor lol
check it out and let me know what you think!

@mzmannings2011: Thanks so much! I’ve never heard of this, but with the title Model in a Bottle, I love it!!! I will definitely have to check it out. And if Oprah likes it, I’m kind of sold! I actually just did my consultation with MAC yesterday, so I’ll be posting about it soon!
