About Mrs. Husky

50% Chance of Flowers

September 3rd, 2010 @ 5:11 pm by Mrs. Husky

So, remember when I was all cocky about growing my own flowers for the wedding? And you all were so kind and complimentary about my choices? Well I feel it’s only fair to tell you that if this were a school project, I would get an F. Because only about 50% of my flowers are exhibiting any kind of growth. But since I’m not in school, and I’m an optimistic, half-full kinda gal, I wanted to give you a glimpse of the progress so far. As a reminder, here’s what we were trying to grow:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 13 1

(from top left: dahlias, maiden grass, rudbeckia, zinnia, Chinese lanterns, red dahlias, autumn leaves, scabiosa stellata)

Here’s what we have growing:

First we have Dahlias. There are beautiful Sunset Dahlias:

Some Ruby Dahlias:

Yellows:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 51 5

Variegated:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 61 6

Soft golden dahlia:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 7 7

Crimson:

Not sure what to call this one, but it’s one of my faves:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 9 9

We also have some mums:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 10 10

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 111 11

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 121 12

I’ve already talked about the progress of our autumn clematis, and our Canna lilies are trying really hard to open:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 131 13

And while we have both a maple and a few maiden grasses growing in our yard, they’re not yet ready for their debut - the leaves aren’t changing yet, and the grass hasn’t yet begun to seed. We also have a couple of patches of some type of wheat-grass type plant (what? I’m still trying to learn all of the species growing in our yard) that I’ll probably use for the arrangements.

I won’t lie and tell you I’m not a little bit disappointed by some of my less ambitious seeds—I really thought the Chinese lanterns would be a beautiful touch. And the scabiosa. Oh, the scabiosa. That’s kind of an ugly name for a flower, isn’t it? Anyway, I think we’re off to a pretty good start! Here’s my first attempt at a centerpiece mock-up:

50% Chance of Flowers : wedding denver flowers 14 14

And a view from the top:

I didn’t add any of the mums to this one, but I really think it will help to fill out the arrangement. I’ve also been thinking about some kind of river rock or other filler at the bottom, but I don’t have a clear vision of how I want that to look.

Have you had any half-successes with a DIY project? What suggestions might you have to help me make these arrangements more beautiful?

All I can say is what you have looks great. Good luck! I thought about growing our flowers, but was too scared and made them from clay instead. I love the centerpiece ock up by the way.

oh girl so jealous! I love dahlia’s and had really hoped to have them at our wedding- no dice- and growing them would have been the icing on the cake. You’ve done an awesome job (btw I love chinese lanterns too but am opting for silk ones at our second reception). Good Luck!

Wow those sunset Dahlias are beautiful! I’ve had my fair share of epic fails in the DIY category. I would say this project for you is a win though! They really are insanely beautiful!

The unnamed dahlia is called “intrigue,” I’m almost positive. We’re growing flowers for our wedding too, and I think we planted that one. :)

And yeah…thank you Oregon summer-that-did-not-exist…we have three flowering plants. Beautiful, fluffy, dahlias…but three plants is NOT gonna cut it. *sigh*

Growing flowers as well, and failing the class! Last night the storm/wind broke off tons of sunflower “arms” at the bases of the plant. Quite a few of our varieties failed to come up from the very beginning in the trays in the green house. On the positive side…we do have one variety of beautiful orange flowers that are going crazy!! Love your dahalias! Wish we had those!!

Really beautiful colors, using river rock at the bottom will also give a stable base to your stems in order to position them.

OMG Husky! Your flowers are gorgeous! This is some serious flower porn here, and your mock up is great! Just wondering.. you have a back up plan if the remaining flowers don’t grow, right?

SUPER SUPER cute! I love all the flowers and think you would have gotten an A+ on the flowers you turned out with, they’re beautiful. Have you thought about maybe Pebble stones, they ooper cute and you can get a large bag for all the center piece’s fairly cheap. and I think it would look pretty with your fall center pieces. :o) GL and great Job.

These flowers are all knockouts! Your centerpieces look stellar too, so I’m sure it’ll all be fine in the end, even if you only DIY 50% and have to supplement with bought blooms

My mom tried to grow ours too and she failed :( but she offered to pay for the florist off our budget, so … okay, I guess. :)

Even if you end up growing 50-75% of your flowers, and have to supplement with supermarket whatever, I think you’ve done a great job!

The overall project may not be working out perfectly, but this is not a DIY fail! Those dahlias are GORGEOUS!! Keep up the hard work, and if you end up a little short, order some bulk bouquets from Costco or something! No big! :)

I like the idea of some river stones at the bottom of the mason jar. I feel like it will complete the look.

@Mrs. Pretzel: I ended up finding some dried lanterns on Etsy! I should get them sometime next week.

@sweetredthing: Thanks! I feel ya. The flowers that are growing look great - there just aren’t many of them! I have a feeling our arrangements will be heavily supplemented with costco/supermarket/local florist flowers.

@septmob: what a bummer about your poor sunflowers! We have a few growing, but - again - not enough!

@eloquence08: good point!

@Miss Glasses: Does a last minute visit to costco/supermarket/local florist count? If yes, then…yes?

@SeetyPea: great idea!
