Cake or Cupcakes

September 4th, 2010 @ 11:35 am by Mrs. Brooch

I have a little confession to make.

I am somewhat obsessed with cupcakes. I love baking cupcakes and, yes, I love eating them too. I like sweets (see here), so it’s natural for me to like cupcakes. Who doesn’t like a mouthful of cake and icing? They’re bite-size bits of joy, if you ask me!

Not everyone is crazy about cupcakes, though. Mr. B, for instance, likes cake better. I don’t understand it, honestly, but that’s his preference and that’s fine. Well, sort of. We’re having a bit of a debate about whether cupcakes or cake should be the main dessert at our wedding. I understand cupcakes are a trend and don’t quite meet the traditional expectation of wedding guests, but I like them—I love them, actually, and therefore I think we should have them. (See the “About Me” section to the right. It’s true. I want to say and do it all.)

My main argument—cupcakes are really cute. They’re adorable, hip, and fun. Don’t you think?

So like anything else in a marriage (and a wedding), we’re going to have to compromise. My suggestion is to throw cupcakes on our dessert bar, but I realize we can’t have it all. So I proposed the best of both worlds: put the cake and cupcakes on a stand together, and have a lovely dessert duo. Classy, yet cost effective. Simple, yet stunning.

Mr. B isn’t quite on board yet. He’s such a traditionalist, let me tell ya! I haven’t really had the opportunity to make my case, though, because we haven’t really researched the topic or even talked a lot about it.

I’ll keep you posted on what we decide!

Did you serve cupcakes at your wedding?

I love cupcakes just as much as the next girl, but they are rather trendy. If you’re okay with that I say go for it! They are adorable and it’s nice to have a portion controlled piece of cake, and it’s less messy! I’m having cupcakes AND my massive cake… I just couldn’t choose =)

I love those photos! I will be adding them to my ‘wedding planning’ folder! We will be doing cupcakes at our wedding next summer. We are planning on still having a small cake for cake-cutting pictures. However, I like cupcakes way more than cake, and they certainly are cute!!

I love cupcakes so I adore this idea! (I even have a cupcake tattoo!) I was actually thinking of doing the same thing for our wedding, a cake on the top tier with cupcakes for the rest.
It may seem like a trend these days, but it’s so much more efficient, especially if your venue charges a “cutting fee” per guest. Just a thought.

I think cupcakes are really cute, but I prefer the icing/cake ratio of actual cake over cupcakes (unless they’re filled cupcakes, and then I’m onboard), and I figured this is only time in my life that I will ever buy a nice cake (birthday cakes and the like are usually of the home-made or grocery store varity) so that’s why we decided to be a traditional and go with cake. However if our venue charged a cake cutting fee (we are cutting and serving the cake ourselves- some work, but will present for some cute photo opportunities, since I’m going to be making “bride” and “groom aprons”), then I’d pick cupcakes for sure!

we are cupcakes all the way- I knew I wanted them before we were even engaged. Rob’s mom even bought me a cupcake charm for my chamilia bracelet for my birthday saying she knew I wanted a cupcake wedding cake. (we were engaged two months later) We will have a small top tier for us to cut and then 3 tiers of cupcakes- two different flavors.

Trendy? Sure. But I have had cupcakes for my birthday cakes since I was little and I love to bring them to parties as the dessert. They are trendy but they are also very “Me” lol

Cupcakes would definitely be fun! We are probably doing a cupcake tower with a small (one-tier) cake to cut at the reception. The cupcake vendor that we are actually considering is throwing in a cake for us to cut with our order. If you don’t make your own, you should ask your vendor if they can do the same!

Can I be honest? I have never understood the cake vs. cupcake debate because to me they are both the same thing.. and I don’t like either one :)

If I had to choose I think I wold pick cake, though, because there is less frosting on cake.

Yep - I like the idea. Guests don’t always like “wedding cake” and with cupcakes you can offer flavor options (carrot, red velvet, etc). Good idea!

We are going with cupcakes and a small cake on the top tier for cutting as well. It just makes more sense for us. You don’t have to worry about cutting the cake for everybody and the extra work/expense that it entails. Plus it’s something that we can do ourselves!

We found the absolutely, positively most adorable cupcake pans at William and Sonoma.

After seeing these pans, my decision was made for me!

we are doing the compromise at our engagement party. he wanted cupcakes; i wanted a nice cake with our names on it that we could cut. so we are having tiers of different flavored cupcakes with a mini cake on top.

for the wedding we are going with just cake (and a cookie table!) because i loooove poured fondant and you can’t really do that on cupcakes.

i love cupcakes too, and always have wanted them at my wedding. my fiance however, wanted a cake(i actually am not a cake fan). so originally we were gonna have both, but we figured it wouldn’t be very cost effective. so our compromise is, cake for the wedding and i’m have cupcakes at my shower, mini and regular ones and all different flavors.

I like cake! I’m a total white cake white icing traditionalist though! (Probably because it’s my absolute favorite dessert!)

We did this- cake on the top tier and cupcakes on the bottom tiers. We had three different flavors of cupcakes. After we cut our little cake, the wait staff served the cupcakes on platters family-style, to the tables. It worked out great! Good luck!

One thing to think about if you go with cupcakes. I heard of a wedding where the couple was trying to save money so they didnt have plates or forks for dessert. Everyone got a cupcake and a napkin and apparently it was an absolute mess. Frosting and crumbs everywhere! So if you go with cupcakes, either make them small/1 bite worth or be sure to have plates and forks for those who want them or else your guests will look like 1st graders at a birthday party (picture cupcake EVERYWHERE!)

Glasses has the right idea! We are definitely having cupcakes, trends be damned! Lemon, red velvet and traditional white wedding cake flavors. Now I’m hungry.

I was dying to have those Lofthouse pink frosted cookies, but my husband didn’t think it was substantial enough. So we went with cupcakes from a local market and a small cake to cut. I didn’t notice any mess from the cupcakes and the whole thing was really cost efficient (the cake wasn’t anything fancy, just plain frosting). Everyone loved the cupcakes AND my mom brought us those pink cookies anyway!

I love reading all your comments! I can’t tell what’s more popular tho, cake or cupcakes! Sounds like a lot of people are opting for both :) Love that!!
