Doggie (Wedding) Day Care

September 4th, 2010 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Elephant

And now for a post dedicated to the other member of the Elephant household: my dog.  Gypsy is a seven-year-old (we think) little mix of chihuahua and rat terrier (again, we think) that I adopted from a local animal shelter over four years ago. She is the first pet in my family other than fish, hermit crabs, and hamsters and is truly loved by me, my parents, and my brother (and I think Mr. E as well, although he won’t always admit it). They are all willing to look after Gypsy if I’m ever out of town for work, and they usually spoil her while they have her. She has even made it into all Christmas pictures since Mr. E and I started dating.

Christmas 2009

I’ve seen pictures of weddings online where couples have incorporated their beloved pets in one way or another—from using pet photos in save the dates and table numbers to actually walking their furry friends down the aisle!

I love these pictures and I love Gypsy, but walking down the aisle at the wedding will most likely be too much for her to handle. Gypsy isn’t the biggest fan of crowds, which may be a result of her pre-shelter life. When people are hugging, she thinks that they are hurting each other and barks out in protest. I also don’t think our venue allows pets, since it is an active golf course.

For these reasons, as well as others, Gypsy will be enjoying the comforts of the Pet Hotel during the wedding weekend. We’ll drop her off before all the hustle and bustle begins on Friday, and my parents will pick her back up once the guests leave on Sunday and watch her while we take our mini-moon. I think that this is the best option for Gypsy because the staff will be able to give her the attention that I know she wouldn’t get while we are dealing with the last-minute details.

Don’t even think about taking my lamb from me.

I would be so much better off if that bone wasn’t in plastic.

Will you be incorporating your dogs (or other pets) into your wedding? Or will you be boarding them?

We were lucky to be able to have our mutt hang out with us in the bridal apartment at our venue (a winery) all day at our wedding. He stayed in the bridal bathroom during the ceremony, then came out on-leash during the reception to hang out and dance. People really seemed to enjoy him, and I know I loved having him around. But it’s good that you’ve found a good boarding place for your pup where he will be well taken care of all weekend! It was a bit complicated for us figuring out where our dog would stay on the night of the wedding, since almost all our friends (even locals) were staying at the hotel, but he managed to spend a quality night at the best man’s house.

We’ll be (sadly) boarding ours for the wedding! It breaks my heart, but it’s the best choice for them.

I think the closest my little Daisy cat will get to the wedding may be a replica of her on the cake. Other than that, she’ll be at my parent’s house, enjoying a quiet afternoon of napping.

I am currently saving for, and waiting for my golden retriever puppy. My family friend is a (responsible) breeder and her dogs are show quality. She is planning a litter for June next year, so the puppy will be 18 months old by the wedding and if all goes to plan will be our ring bearer!

We didn’t have our dog at the time of our wedding, but it would have been fun to incorporate her! :) Gypsy is really cute!

@nataliemarie: Thanks for the tip. We’ve boarded her a couple of times in Plano, and she gets along really well with the staff there, so we’ll probably go back there.

@Mrs. Quiche: Thanks! I try to remember that cuteness when I’m out walking her at 5 in the morning on a weekend haha.

I have a chihuahua/rat terrier mix as well. She is the best dog ever! She was not an official part of our wedding but she did make an apperance in our wedding video. I got ready at our home and after my appearance to my dad, Tobi Ann ran into the room to check me out as well. The videographer got a shot of me bending down and loving on her. I’m super grateful for that because she really is a part of our family.

Cute little doggies. I got an idea from this post that you can also include your pets on your wedding. Clever one!

We pla to have both of our pit bulls walking down the aisle with the rest of the wedding party. I have a matching bm dress for our girl and am making a bowtie for our boy! No, they won’t behave perfectly and no they won’t sit still but they are our family and since we are able we will have them there! After that we will have people take turns watching after them as we hang out at our outdoors venue :-)

Ours are staying at home during the wedding and our in-laws are checking up on them while we go on our honeymoon.

@jhofer: How cute! I don’t think I’ve seen any other mixes like Gypsy.

@jordynrose: My parents will be on Gypsy duty during our minimoon and honeymoon.
