Engageaversabirthdary: The Prequel

September 4th, 2010 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Zebra

Zeb was raised in a traditional Portuguese/Lebanese/European melting-pot home. I have to give credit where credit is due; his parents raised him and his sister right. The worst thing Zeb has ever done is ride a go-kart through the high school. Hehe. It is no surprise that he wanted to ask my father for permission to marry his only daughter.

We didn’t think about the barbaric history of this act. I think it is romantic. You’re stuck with your in-laws for the rest of your life; the least you can do is find out if they like you first. Hey, many of today’s wedding traditions have sexist roots: garters, veils, honeymoons, etc. My motto is: get rid of the traditions you can’t bear to participate in, and embrace the ones that need new meaning.

My dear old dad, to this day, will STILL tell you the story of how I always said Zeb and I were “just friends.” He thinks I lied to him and that I was trying to (with the Meet the Parents “I’ll be watching you” gesture) “pull a fast one.” I think he has a sixth sense for reading people. Actually, I know he does, but that is a part of my brother’s story. Hehe.

My father is an intimidating man, I’m not going to lie. He’s a teddy bear inside, but on the outside, he resembles this guy…

Snap into a Slim Jim!

My dad is pretty awesome. He makes no apologies for who he is, and he is certainly a one-of-a-kind sorta person. So my six-foot-tall, Hulk Hoganish, Harley-riding, Peterbilt-tattoo-sporting, born-truck-driving father settled into his favorite leather chair early one Friday afternoon. He had just gotten home from a trip, and at these times my mother and I like to refer to him as a bear (a grizzly, grumpy bear). He heard Zeb’s car pull into the stone driveway and saw him slowly approaching the house. Dad says it best when describing what Zeb looked like, but suffice it to say, the color was drained from his face.

“OK, give it to me straight, Zeb. She’s pregnant.”

That’s right, we be a classy family, yo. Needless to say, Zeb calmed down and asked permissions to marry me, and my father gave his blessing, along with a reminder never to scare him like that again.

Did your HTB speak to your father before he proposed?

Yes and I was pleasantly surprised, and it made my heart happy. And my pops is a rough around the edges, tough guy exterior/heart of gold type of guy too :P

He sure did! And, because my sister and mother figured out what was going on before he got to my parent’s house, he was greeted at the door by my brother and dad both holding shot guns.

This is going to be a lame comment but you can blame my wrestling obsessed FI….. Macho Man Randy Savage said “Snap into a Slim Jim”, not Hulk Hogan!! lol Sorry… again blame my FI!!!

Anyways, my FI did not even talk to my dad about the proposal, the only people he told were his parents and my mom. When I called my dad to tell him my FI and I got engaged (we were on vacation in Vegas) my dad said “oh, well congratulations”. My dad doesn’t show much emotion… ever!! lol

Awww. This is way cute. I think it is sweet that he asked! Mr. G’s proposal was spontaneous- he knew that he wanted to marry me and that when he had a ring he’d ask me, I told them that I truly didn’t need one, so he asked me right there on the spot. Sometimes I wonder if my parents care that he didn’t ask! This post is a cute story for an early Sunday morning :D

Loving the hulk, what you gunna do, what you gunna do when hulkamania comes after you. Also, I don’t get how a honeymoon is sexist. If someone could let me know I would really appreciate it. I understand how a veil is and the whole asking permission but totally not getting how a honeymoon is. Thanks.

He asked both of my parents separately over the phone the day that he proposed. The proposal wasn’t a big surprise to anyone and he knew that my family already more than approved of him so it was just a formality. He made my mom cry :-). Then she proceeded to tell EVERYONE we know before I even had the ring on my finger. Thanks Mom!

Mr. E went to my parents, when I thought he was going to work, and asked. My parents really loved that moment.

i told mr d when we were discussing marriage a while back that he didnt have to ask my dad. back story. my dad has been in prison since i was 5 and he is getting out in a little over a month. he missed everything and has no bar to compare glenn to. my only request was that he ask my mom. she has been mom and dad for as long as i can remember and she has seen me through every break up. he did about 12 hours before he proposed and i couldnt be happier!

@nqz100: BAHHHH HAHAHAH! Now THATS awesome!

@chicklet1587: Damn! Epic Fail! lol We watched wrestling all the time when I was little too. Thank your Fi for the correction. :)

@Engagement rings Ireland: Some stories involve drugging and kidnapping women in other villages. I prefer the sweeter theory about a honeymoon’s evolution. :)

Yep, he asked. He actually called my parents (they live about 1000 miles away), and then when they came up for Thanksgiving, they brought him my great grandmother’s ring. He didn’t tell them when he was going to propose though (mama can’t keep a secret).

My FI asked my Dad as well! It was something that I was really set on him doing (I’m a little bit of a Daddy’s girl). FI and my Dad are both big and burly-like on the outside but total teddy bears on the inside and from what I hear, it was a nice moment for both of them!

My FI asked my mom. She said she wouldn’t say anything and he goes, “actually I need to to tell everyone.” He planned a suprise afterparty at my favorite restaurant for me and all my relatives came!

MY FI asked my mom! He had been trying to ask her for months, but my brother would always come and visit with him when he stopped by (my bro is still in high school and my FI lived in the same town as my mom). He finally asked her when it was the two of them driving in Chicago. My mom freaked out, started crying, and had to pull over. She then made some random stranger take a picture of them so she could have the moment captured on camera!! hahaha, pretty funny!

Yes, and I was terrified because he gave my brother-in-law a rough time. Apparently, FI got none of the same - all permission and blessing! Phew!!

Apparently the call to request permission (and access to the heirloom ring) got a response along the lines of “it’s about time.”

And yeah, it was about time!
