Here Comes the Bride

September 5th, 2010 @ 4:40 pm by Mrs. Starfish

I’ve mentioned before that Mr. Starfish is super traditional, so I’ll be heading towards him on our wedding day to Here comes the Bride. Once that decision was made, Mr. Starfish thought the ceremony music was done.

Wrong. We still had a few songs to pick out. We are getting married in a Catholic Church, but we aren’t doing a full mass, so luckily it did narrow down our choices. We needed to decide on songs for the mothers and wedding party to walk down to, the processional, and the recessional. We thought we had it nailed down.

So, the processional was our obvious choice. We are going with The Bridal Chorus by Wagner.

We then had to find a song for the wedding party to walk down the aisle. We decided to go with Canon in D by Pachelbel. It’s so long that we are also using it as the mothers’ walk down the aisle.

Last, it was time to choose the recessional. The obvious choice for us was the Wedding March by Mendelssohn. I never really considered anything else for the recessional.

Until…I realized there was no where to include our alma mater’s song. Our school song, which was played many times throughout our college years, is Hail Holy Queen. I knew we had to include it in the wedding somehow. When we found out we only needed three songs, it narrowed our places to use it. The processional was set, so it left the wedding party song or the recessional. At first I wanted to keep the Wedding March, but it doesn’t make sense to have our friends walk down to our alma mater song, so we decided to forgo tradition and we’ll be leaving the church as husband and wife to Hail Holy Queen.

Too bad we can’t include the Sister Act version somewhere.

Are you choosing traditional music for the ceremony or are you going for something a little different?

Sounds like you had a relatively easy process for picking ceremony music. I think it’s awesome that you are using your school song! Mr. G won’t let me use anything from my school- the British just don’t understand the whole “be true to your school” concept.

That sounds nice!
I’m doing traditional music (JS Bach) for the prelude & processional & the Bridal Chorus for my march. But FI chose the “Imperial March” for the groomsmen’s processional. :-) I think it’ll be fun & a surprise for the guests hehe, we like surprises. He said he might look for a storm troopers mask to wear as he marches :-P

I’m surprised you’re allowed to do the wedding march in the church…our priest won’t let us play anything that could have a secular connotation :(. Your music lineup sounds great!

I’ve got to admit, I don’t care that it’s an organ playing it, I still hear the Sister Act version in my head! LOL

Our ceremony music was a different kind of traditional. Our wedding party processed to the very traditional “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring,” but I processed to “Jupiter” from Holst’s “The Planets,” which I’ve never heard of being used at a wedding. Our recessional was played by a bagpiper! Very traditional considering my husband’s Scottish heritage, but not the type of traditional you always expect here in the US.

We arranged everyone from my university (a LOT of us!) for a group photo at the very end of the night on the dance floor, when everyone was good and happy, and we spontaneously broke out into a few choruses of our alma mater. It was hilarious and I’m so glad our videographer was there.

@missbiscuit: Me too, but I didnt know if it was just because I love it!
@LittlestBirds: I love that you all broke out into your alma mater song, that must be so awesome to watch on the video! :)

I would check with your priest/wedding coordinator if you can use Wagner’s Bridal Chorus–it is usually not allowed at Catholic weddings, because it is a piece of secular music.

Even though you are not doing a full mass, you could still do an offering of flowers to Mary, which would be a perfect time to play Hail Holy Queen.

@Leprechaun: WE checked with our church, it’s actually on their recommended ceremony music list.
