Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Taming the To Dos

September 6th, 2010 @ 5:00 pm by Mrs. Hippo

Planning a wedding takes tons of organization, and everyone has her own way of handling all the details. Me? I’m an extreme list maker. Whether it’s going grocery shopping and making a list in the order I would actually pick up the items based on the layout of the store (produce, perishables, grocery, frozen—I said I was an extreme list maker!) or just my regular work to-do list, writing down tasks and crossing them off when they’re done makes me happy. While a regular piece of paper (college ruled, of course) used to do the job just fine, I have recently embraced technology and moved my to-do list online.

I recently adopted Toodledo for both my wedding and normal-life lists and it’s been great, so I thought I’d spread the word. Here’s why I love it so:

  1. It’s free-ninety-nine! You can sign up for a free account online and start making lists really easily. You can assign deadlines and a priority level to each item and simply check things off the list when you’ve completed them.
  2. There is an iPhone app. I usually shy away from apps that aren’t free, but at $3.99, this one is totally worth it. You can add or check off tasks when you’re on the go, and the online and iPhone versions sync back and forth so you always have the most up-to-date list. What I love the most about the app is that you don’t need an Internet connection to use it. A lot of times I’ll add items to my list while I’m on the subway, which you can’t do if you are just using the online version, and when I get above ground again, I can sync the lists back up.
  3. Your “Hotlist” is e-mailed to you every morning. Basically, you decide the priority level and deadline range for the items that appear on your Hotlist. An e-mail is sent to you every morning detailing these tasks. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen, “Book a DJ” in my inbox. It will come off of that Hotlist at some point, I just know it!

How are you managing your infinite list of things to do?

I haven’t found an iPhone to-do list app that I have liked yet. I’ll have to try this one, thanks!

I need this app (but first I need an iphone). For years I’ve been writing to-do lists on a post-it note and sticking them to my wallet…I knew there had to be a better way!

This app makes me wish I had an iPhone. I just make my To Do lists the old-school post-it/random scrap of paper way.

I love checking off lists! I just was going through some keepsakes from high school, and discovered lists from my senior year… I was in an activity that had an event that was a little like planning a small wedding…. it had a ceremony, a reception, flowers, and even attendants of sorts… (fellow officers who you had to buy gifts and corsages for!) When my school day had free time, I wrote lists to plan it because I was the “President” of the group. I have filtered out a lot of junk from my high school years, but some how I keep keeping a few of those lists. (I decided that I’m going to add a couple to my high school scrapbook, because in a way they were what was happening in my life at the time!)

A bee after my own heart! My current to do list iPhone app is okay…but this one looks SO MUCH BETTER! There are lists and everything! It’s so…organized! It’s embarrassing how excited I am about this.

Love Toodledo! It was the first app I bought when I got my iphone 4. The iphone and website interface is excellent, well worth the $3.99. :) I, too, am a huge list-maker and have going from paper to 100% toodledo for the wedding and general life stuff. It’s so convenient.

YES! Hippo this is awesome! I am an avid list-maker myself and know how you feel! As much as I love that moment where I get to physically cross something off my college ruled paper (obviously!) I think I may give this app a shot. (:

If you have an iPhone and like organizing your grocery list, you NEED the Grocery IQ app! You can input different stores and set up the aisles of each store in the right order. When you make your list, it automatically puts the items in the right aisle and then your list is in AISLE ORDER. It is AMAZING. I don’t know how I ever shopped without it.
