Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Starting Our Save the Dates

September 7th, 2010 @ 10:07 am by Mrs. Brooch

We decided we’re going to incorporate our engagement pictures into our save the dates. We’re really happy with the amazing artwork that our photographer did, and since we already paid for them, we think it’s a good idea to utilize them.

Mama Brooch had an excellent idea to use more than one of our photos for the save the dates because we have a lot. (We actually have more than 700 pictures, but that’s a different post for a different day!!!) She suggested we send the pictures we feel are appropriate for each recipient instead of sending everyone the same thing. This way we’re making the most of our awesome variety.

Last night we sorted the pictures and picked the ones we’d like to send to my family, his family, and our friends. I was so thrilled that we were finally starting this project that I began playing around on the computer with the photos. You can see below my start to our save the dates, which I don’t think is too bad for a first-time-DIY bride like myself, eh? There’s a lot still left to do with these, but at least we’ve got the ball rolling! Hooray!

For his family:

For our friends:

For my family:

So I realize there are a lot of mistakes on these (such as the incomplete wording), but rest assured they will be perfect when they’re finished! This is just the start! Something wonky was going on with the program I was using. I actually thought the designing would be a lot easier than it is.

Even though they don’t look bad, we’ve got a long way to go. I want them to look more professional, like the save the dates below, with a nicer font and layout for the text, but there’s time. If I can’t improve my designs (the ones above are not going to work, obviously!), I might just order them!

I can’t wait to see what you end up with! We DIYed the card and information, and then ordered the magnets.

I liked that you picked appropriate pictures for each side of the family and your friends! We did a postcard with e-pic on the front and a Martha template on the back. We didn’t order any but I definitely looked at ordering templates.

The photos are gorgeous!!
I’m kind of sad we didn’t get professional engagement photos (yet - theres still time!).
What we ended up doing for our Save the Dates, we had a family friend draw a poster with our names, 2 people fishing off the end of a dock, with the words He hooked her, our wedding date & invitation to follow on it. Shes an artist so the people fishing looks amazing! Anyways, after getting this drawn up, we played around in the snow and had FMIL take pictures of us holding the sign. Ended up picking out the best one, making a label for the back and some magnets, printing, assembling & sending them away. They were a huge hit!

@Miss Elephant: Yeah these are definitely the rough drafts. Luckily, we’ve been able to come up with something a lot nicer since! Can’t wait to share them! @Marks: Thanks :) We totally lucked out in finding a photographer like right after our engagement. There is still time for you though! Your save the dates sound AWESOME!!!!!!!! That’s so unique. I wish ours were more unique!

I had a very similar design in mind for mine originally, but I ended up doing the photos separate from the card because I wanted to mess around with texture (cotton paper, metallic accents, matte photo). Don’t make the same mistake as me — it’s too frigging time-consuming for a Save the Date! Incorporating the design into the photo and just having one printed piece is sooo the way to go. Your designs (and engagement photos) look awesome!
