The Second-Guessing Begins

September 7th, 2010 @ 5:02 pm by Mrs. Seashell

Six months ago we picked out the tuxes for Mr. Seashell and our groomsmen. It was pretty straightforward. We walked into MW Tux in Chicago, dressed up a few mannequins, and arranged for a pick-up in Providence. Easy peasy. Here were our selections:

Ivory vest and tie for Mr. Seashell, black vest and purple tie for groomsmen

Sharp and dapper? Absolutely.

But then, I went to a black tie event with Papa Seashell over the summer.

I couldn’t escape the thought that men in bow-tie tuxes looked just a bit more polished and formal and special. I mentioned the idea to Mr. Seashell, and he uttered words I have never heard in our relationship before: “Whatever you think, honey.” (My head is still spinning.) Mr. Seashell is hopelessly opinionated, and frankly I’m still confused about this exchange of ours.

Time passed, and I couldn’t get the idea of bow-tie tuxes out of my head. I would have immediately made the switch if it wasn’t for one concern: Mr. Seashell carries some of his weight in his face and I was worried a bow-tie would look too “tight.” Additionally, I’ve seen Mr. Seashell in a vest and tie tux before. Wouldn’t a bow-tie tux feel all the more special on our wedding day? I was starting to think so.

So, on Saturday we played dress up.

Eeeeeeeeeeeee! I died. I love, love, love, love, loooooooove Mr. Seashell in a bow-tie tux! Who knew? The picture on the right is one of my all-time favorite pictures of my man EVER. That little devilish grin on his face is crazy cute. Needless to say, we made the switch.

To distinguish him from his groomsmen, we’re adding a simple black vest for the groomsmen. Maybe that’s a little backwards, but I’m going with less is more for the groom.

Have you second-guessed any of your wedding decisions? How did they turn out?

Kudos to Mr Seashell who looks soo well behaved and dashing in his bowtie.. i’m jealous, my FI will not allow me to take a pic of him in a tux until it’s properly fitted :(

Need to point out that was a blue blazer with the black bowtie. Thankfully the iphone camera isn’t good enough to pick that up. I was also wearing shorts and sneakers. Hopefully I will look a lot better with the real stuff.

@Mr +Seashell: Yes, honey. No one would have known you were in a navy blazer with a black bow-tie, khaki shorts, and sneakers unless you commented. You TOTALLY blew our cover ;)

Aww…haha! You two are so cute! I do think Mr. Seashell looks quite dapper with the bow-tie and the less is more will definitely work well! Looking good, Mr. Seashell!

So jealous that Mr. Seashell is open to the bowtie! I love it! It’s so James Bond and Cary Grant. Alas, I was shot down…

MW Tux is obsessed with the groom wearing an ivory vest & tie! I swear it’s in their sales manual or something. We only had my husband & his best man, and the saleslady was so horrified at the thought of them matching that my husband was instantly sold on the ivory vest thing.

eeee- we also went to MW this weekend and did tuxes!

Mr. Seashell is sooo cute w/a bowtie! We’re also doing ivory shirts and black vest for the GM, but Mr. Bunny will be in an ivory vest.

I have a minicrush on the Mister, but no worries, it’s because he completely reminds me of my own. Unfortunately mine was not so easy going when it came to his suit, but hey, whatevs.

You two are adorable by the way. :)

My son just got married this summer…he and his 10 (yes, 10!) groomsmen all wore black tux, black bow tie, black cummerbund, no vest. Every last one of them looked so James Bond-ish. It was fabulous! I’m glad to see your guy is doing it too.

I ran with the one thing I know about men’s formal wear: four-in-hand tie before sunset.
