A Moment for My Mom

September 8th, 2010 @ 9:09 am by Mrs. Elephant

This past weekend, Mama Elephant and I set out on a couple vendor meetings (ceremony music and one last meeting with DJ/lighting company) and then decided to make an appointment for me to try on a couple of dresses.

Before you get you hopes up, there were no pictures allowed in the bridal boutique, so I don’t have any new pictures of me in dresses to share with you…at least not yet. ;)

Our dress-shopping outing began with a quick trip to Ross, where I followed Mrs. Scissors’ advice on getting some proper undergarments to wear to try on dresses. Using the trusty GPS, we found our way to the bridal boutique and got there before it even opened…oops! Our appointment was at 1:30, so we waited till about five minutes after the store opened, hoping that maybe we could get started early.

Our salesperson/dresser Marcy was so sweet! She prepared my dressing room while Mama Elephant and I started picking out some samples to try on. After Marcy saw the style we were going for, she began picking some out as well. We quickly accumulated quite a stack, so we stopped and headed for the dressing room. Mama Elephant sat out by the stand/mirror while I headed to the back and tried on the first dress.

I walked out and could tell that my mom was having a moment…the first time she saw her only daughter in a wedding dress. It was so sweet! We both agreed that we really liked the first one (chiffon, not lace like I thought I would want), and continued on through several more dresses.

Throughout the course of our-hour appointment, I think I tried on about 10 or so dresses and definitely confirmed that I am not the satin-ballgown-wearing bride (major props to those brides out there who are—that dress was sooooo heavy!) and that a chiffon dress with ruching was very figure flattering for my body type. I was so happy to have a waist, which I didn’t really have with the dress I tried on at David’s Bridal.

This is a beautiful dress but just wasn’t me.

We listed our top three contenders with Marcy and will be heading back there during the Bridesmaids’ Dallas Summit so my four bridesmaids can see me try on some dresses.

They didn’t give us the names of the designers/dress models, so I had to search high and low (based on my memory) to find the image of my favorite…I want to call it “the one,” but I agree with Mama Elephant that I need to try on a couple more just to make sure. I’m going to be a tease and keep you in suspense for pictures of the dress until later on. :)

Did you check out more dresses after finding a favorite?

I can’t wait to see your dress! As for me, I bought my dress at the first place I went to because it was a blowout sale. It wasn’t love at first sight. It was gradual, growing love and I want to wear my dress again!

I found my dress online! However, before purchasing it, I went to a couple of bridal salons but couldn’t stop thinking about the dress I fell in love with online.

Good Luck!

I can’t stand when dress shops won’t tell you the brand or style number of what you’ve tried on. Grrrr.

I can’t wait to see what you chose!

it’s illegal for them to cut out the designer label, so they should be able to tell you the name/designer of each dress. if they don’t, they’re pretty sketchy and i wouldn’t buy from them.

So excited! I got my dress the first day, first spot. The place where I purchased my dress designs all the dresses, so I left wondering about the designer, only to realize when I got it that was designed and created by the shop.

That is exactly what I did! I tried on dresses and there was one clear standout. I used a crappy sketch I made when leaving the dress salon and preownedweddingdresses to figure out the designer/style. Needless to say, I ended up buying the same dress at a less sketchy place for the same price.

I found “the one” in my first appointment, seven days after I got engaged. I had a good 14 months of engagement ahead of me, so you better believe I did some shopping around to make sure I wasn’t just caught up in the thrill of my first wedding dress appointment. I think I tried on another 50 dresses … just to be sure. :) And I was REALLY sure by the time I finally bought it.

@Miss Sloth: @kitzy: @jordynrose: I agree completely! I am so glad I was able to figure out who made it, then call around to see who sold it at a better price.
