Remember how I debated about whether or not to wear these “a-tad-too-dark-blue shoes”? Many of you insisted that I find shoes that were a brighter shade, as I had mentioned wanting. But, I couldn’t do it. Look at those shoes! They had me at hello. I’ll be honest, blues were the colors in our wedding but I cared more for the style of the shoe than the actual color of the shoe. I was a bride who had discussed with our DOC if it would be OK to wear bright red shoes even if red wasn’t in our color scheme at all!

So yes, I went with the Nina Elga, in all their 4.25 inch heel and navy blue goodness.

And yes again, you did read that correctly. I went with 4.25 inch heels. The Elga has a 1/2” platform. So, I was really only hovering up about 3.75”. As I mentioned before, I’m use to wearing heels. I wear them all the time. I was a competitive figure skater for over a decade of my life, so my feet are pretty good at handling the pain. However, most all new shoes are going to hurt if they are not properly broken in.

Knowing this, I pushed myself to wear the shoes for hours every day for the last month before the wedding. At first, I only wore the shoes while sitting or standing on carpet. I was paranoid about scuffing the bottoms of the shoes. After a while, I got over it and just walked around. See the first photo above? Can you tell I had been wearing them for a month?

Of course, I didn’t have to go it alone. Mr Hot Wings got in on the shoe prepping action too. Do you dig our stay-at-home pre-wedding outfits? They’re hot, we know. :)

The Final Verdict: I wore these shoes from 1:30PM until 11:30PM on our wedding day with all of the standing up and picture taking. I never took them off. My feet certainly weren’t happy with me. They definitely hurt at the end. But I lasted, and I got to wear my pretties all night. They must not have hurt all that badly because I recall running out of the reception at the end of the night. So, I think that the shoe prepping worked.

Do you have big plans for prepping your feet and shoes for the big day?

Haha, love that you took pics breaking in your shoes! I wore my wedges during all dance lessons and while practicing in our apartment, but only secretly wore my ceremony shoes, because I didn’t want Mr. Bru to know *anything* about my morning bridal ensemble. Yeah, it sounds kinda weird looking back on it. Ah, well. :-)

Such a great idea! I remember being a bridesmaid for one of my friends a few years ago and the night before the wedding we were outside the hotel while I rubbed her shoes all over the asphalt so that they wouldn’t slip around on the dance floor. Of course she didn’t wear them at all before the big day (didn’t want to get them dirty) and they hurt her feet so much she had to change shoes for the reception. So… good planning! And definitely something I’ll add to my to-do list!

I’ve been wearing my 4″ heels in by wearing them around the house, too. I’ve been considering wearing them to a friend’s wedding in a few weeks to see how they last during a marathon wedding night, but I’m also afraid I might scuff them.
Here’s a tutorial I found online that seems like it would work well, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf5mJ7aR2t8& I haven’t tried it yet, but it seems logical…

OH! I must start doing this! My shoes are also 4.25″ w/ a .5″ platform… and then there are the 4″ wedges I’m wearing for our ceremony. Sigh.

Last time I was a BM I ended up dancing barefoot (ick) most of the night b/c I did not break in my shoes and my tootsies ended up swollen and blistered (hot, i know).

I started breaking in my shoes 11 months before the wedding by dancing in them. Suede-soled shoes are meant to be worn in, you want a nice smooth finish to be fast on the floor. I got a tiny scuff on the toe but I’m going to take a Mr. Clean Eraser to it and hope for the best.

I wore mine around the house beforehand too! And so did my husband! You lasted longer than I did! I wore my shoes from about 4:30-11:00 so I think I did pretty well! Mine were 3.5 inches tall and I danced all night!

Oh, I need to do that with my shoes. I’ve only worn them a couple of times on the carpet.

I have just been thinking about doing that with my shoes. I did laundry and washed dishes in them the other day, but I NEVER wear heels and I am going to need a lot of help. Thanks for reminding me I need to get on it :)

OH, I had big plans to do the exact same thing. But only wore them about 2-3 times the month prior. But they were OK…def hurting but I didn’t take them off till about 10ish. So I consider that a success!

I need to start wearing mine around the house, thanks for the reminder. I have been storing my shoes with fat winter socks under the toe bridge to loosen it up a bit. Totally works!

I brought mine to the shoe repair guy and first had them stretched, then I wore them around my apartment as I was packing to move in to my FI condo. Now the condo is a no shoe zone (protecting the bamboo floors as best we can) so I have to hope that was enough.

Love your shoes! I’ve definitely thought about doing this. I think you have convinced me that conditioning my feet is worth it. Luckily we are still a month out, so shoes here I come.

I wear thick socks when I wear mine to help the satin stretch. This was a great post, thank you!

I need to start practicing with mine, I’m impressed you lasted all night in them. I’ll be lucky if I last through the first dance
