Cookie Cutter Review

September 8th, 2010 @ 3:56 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Do you remember these awesome cookie cutters I mentioned a while back? Well, I got them in the mail and did a test run for the wedding.

Cookie Cutter Review : wedding favors food newport Dress

The lettering came out pretty good, it’s pretty easy to read, but I wasn’t happy with the overall effect. The cookies above look perfect, but no matter what I tried, my cookies got a line above and below each line of words.

It’s from the sliders where you add the letters, but I couldn’t figure out how to press down without the line appearing. After several tries, I decided this project is a no-go for the Starfish wedding. Although, I love the cookie messages, so I’m hoping to use them for something else in the future.

Despite your review, these still look adorable and I want! lol is that counter-intuitive?

You might want to try a different kind of cookie dough. THe one you used looks like it rises quite a bit - which would cause the lettering to squish in, and the lines to appear. Maybe try a shortbread? Either that, or bake the cookies like you were making cookie bars, then cut them once they’ve cooled slightly. That would create a cleaner cut line and indentation for the letters.
I’ve been tempted (strongly!) to buy that set from Williams-Sonoma. I’m glad to see someone give it a review.

Good luck!

Oh Miss Starfish, I’m sorry they didn’t come out like you wanted! The cookies still look yum.

I haven’t tried these myself yet, but the woman at WS who rang me up when I bought them said that shortbread cookies work best, because they are more dense. Maybe it’s worth a try before you scrap them? They are oober cute!

I had that problem too when I started… I ended up just not pressing as hard. The lettering was far more shallow than I’dve liked, but it did help the lines disappear.
PS- if it makes you feel any better you can faintly see lines above Baby Girl and Thank you in the “pro” cookies in the pic. Even they had issues, I guess.. though some marketing photoshop will do wonders to disguise it.

I love baking cookies, especially cookie cutter cookies! I’m the family baker, and am known for my cookies! I have a couple tips that might help you make this look the way you want it to… First, in looking at your example and comparing it to the “picture perfect version”… it looks like you may be using a different type of dough recipe than they used. Their recipe looks like it might be a thicker dough or a recipe that rises during baking. Your recipe looks like a soft cookie and you probably rolled it to the thickness of the cookies shown in the display version. You probably experimented with dough thickness while rolling the cookies out, but if you didn’t you could try rolling them thin, and cutting the cookie and lightly pushing the letters in… If these are all things that you experimented with then I would return the cookie cutters, because then they are defective!

I have these cutters and have found that if I use a shortbread dough and cut them when it’s really, really hard and cold, they turn out perfectly! Don’t give up! They are too cute!

@Missbliss: I definitely found that rolling them thin (or thinner than they look in the example, anyway) and pressing the letters lightly helped. It made the cookies themselves quite hard, but icing them seemed to help.

I tried them, too - rushed out and bought them after I saw your post about them. Didn’t go so well for me, either. I’m gonna try them again, but not likely going to use them for the wedding. Something else where I’ll be a bit less “perfectionist!”

Yes, I’d find a recipe where you are using less baking powder so they don’t puff up as much. When I’m making sugar cookies that I want to decorate and make ‘em “fancy” I use a recipe that low on the baking powder. Honestly, they’re not always as yummy as the regular kind, but they look pretty :)

And, umm, if you want to scrap it all together, I’ll buy the cookie cutter off of you ;) Love it!

Hi! This happened to me with these cookie cutters as well. I think someone probably already said it, but you need to have a really light touch when you press the plunger to get the letters to imprint. It will feel like you couldn’t possibly have pushed it enough, but it works, I promise! Also make sure you roll the dough as thin as the recipe lists. The words will come out great after these two things (takes a little practice, and you’ll still mess some up probably…I did too). Good luck!

Hola Miss Starfish! I tweeted your dilemma and here’s what Williams Sonoma has to say:

Tips: 1. Use the recipe on the package, it has no leavening. 2. Press lightly to imprint the message.

Good luck!

I so want some of these, and I’m sorry it didn’t work that great. Hopefully Peng’s WS tip will work!

I bought these too, thinking that it would be an adorable favor/OOT bag item to make…until my mom told me I was crazy to press out hundreds of cookies right before the wedding!

I’ve only used it once, but I didn’t really have this same problem. I think that rolling them thinner like everyone else said will definitely help. Also, make sure that you actually put the dough in the fridge like it tells you to. I thought it was a pain and tried skipping this step, but it really does work a lot better when the dough is chilled.

I’m sorry they didn’t turn out right for you because it’s a great idea. I’m seriously considering buying a set of cutters to make personalised cookies as wedding favours!

After reading you first post about these cookie cutters I went out and bought them as well. Guess what thought? I’m having the exact same problem! However, I am going to try to use the less baking powder recipe!

I bought them right after reading your post too! I found that the recipe in the package worked best and I agree with rolling it thin.

…as weddingholic suggested; maybe try following the package recipe to a T and making sure to refrigerate them? I also wanted to skip it but it helped them to hold their shape.

Good luck!!

Sorry these didn’t turn out! What a shame as the pro pics are super cute!
