Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Love Chub

September 8th, 2010 @ 3:35 pm by Mrs. Brooch

I’ve got a great topic to discuss from this month’s issue of Women’s Health magazine and the article “Prevent Love Chub!

I know I’m not the first to admit this, but I’m saying it anyway: Before I was in a relationship, I was thinner! I looked my very best and was the smallest I had ever been when I met my future husband (FH). Yet somehow, over the last four years, I gained an upwards of 20 pounds, and I’m not even sure how. It’d be difficult to pinpoint just one reason because it could have been anything from our restaurant excursions to late-night Häagen-Dazs tastings to weekend snacking.

Here are some of the major reasons women gain weight while in relationships:

“You Eat Out…All The Time”

“You’re Always In Bed”

“You Match Him Bite For Bite”

“You’re Happy”

“His Snacks are Your Snacks”

or all of the above!

It’s true…

1. Mr. Brooch and I are obsessed with eating out.

According to Women’s Health, the solution is to EAT IN.

Experts suggest cooking together or eating a healthy snack a few hours before your dinner out.

2. I match him bite for bite even though I know it’s wrong.

Even if I’m full, I want to eat when he’s eating.

According to Women’s Health, the solution is to SERVE YOURSELF LESS.

It’s unfortunate and unfair,,.but “women burn 26 percent fewer calories than men do.”

3. My FH’s snacks are a big trigger.

Love Chub : wedding arlington diet fitness 0909 Na 0909-na

He likes things like chewy chocolate chip cookies and Häagen-Dazs ice cream. If I don’t have any better options nearby, I’m bound to grab something of his.

According to Women’s Health the solution is to KNOW YOUR OPTIONS.

Either eat a tiny bit of his snack or have a lower-calorie option on hand. Some of my favorites are Kellogg’s 100 Calorie Fudge Shoppe Mini Fudge Stripes or Jell-O Dark Chocolate Pudding (only 60 calories).

Have you gained weight since you started dating your FI? What are you doing to avoid the Love Chub?

Though, admittedly, we’ve been slacking big time, Mr. Bru and I like hitting the gym together. We don’t usually *do* the same things during our time there, but it’s a helpful motivating factor to have a live-in gym buddy! :-)

Oooh yeah. Moving to Panama was even worse for my weight, as they tend to fry everything! It only took 3 months to gain tons of weight, and it’s taking me a year to lose it!

OMG sooo true!! Its been even worse since we got engaged and I bought my wedding dress!! I’m having to try and workout harder now to make sure I fit into the friggin thing!! Its true though, if I see him eating I eat. And we used to eat out A LOT but since we’ve moved and I’m unemployed we don’t go out, and he has managed to somehow lose almost 10 pounds, whilst I’ve lost nothing!! And I’m the one sweating out at home everyday in our gym!! Oy!!!

My husband’s old boss once told him, “I’ve never seen a happy skinny man.” We’ve both put on some weight since we met five years ago, but as long as we’re healthy, I take his little tummy as a compliment that I make him happy. :)

Yes, yes, yes! To all of the above reasons except the “Always in Bed” one (not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing! LOL!)

Now that my SO is on the other side of the country I find that the weight is coming off cause I’m not eating out as much (he’s a foodie!), I’m working out more, and I’m simply just not eating as much. It’s the only good thing about being in a LDR! :)

When he comes into town to visit- I fall off the bandwagon. Last time I seriously gained 5lbs when he was here….dropped it all about two weeks afer he left! Don’t know what in the heck I’m gonna do if we end up married!!! Guess I’ll end up as big as a house! LOL!

Boyfriend and I just decided last night that we are going to limit our sweets to only social situations. Meaning we are going to stop buying ice cream and twizzlers and only indulge ourselves when socially necessary i.e. birthdays, thanksgiving, etc.

Yes! I have started to serve myself less when we eat dinner and that (and the gym) has helped.

I just joined Weight Watchers with a lady from work. I eat healthy but it’s the portion sizes that kill me!

I definitely match Mr. K bite for bite and um sometimes I fill up my plate more than his.

Maintaining your desired weight can be such a challenge. Somehow, I’ve actually lost about 20 lbs in the time that I’ve been with my husband, though all of it was when I was in grad school and we were loving each other across 3,000 miles of distance. My best advice would be portion control combined with regular exercise. It helps to cut back on your alcohol consumption, too! You don’t have to match him drink for drink either.

Oh this is so true! Before I started dating my FH I always thought this was a myth. Fast forward 1.5 years and 13 pounds and I realize it is a fact for me. I think I can eat like him, I like just cuddling on the couch with him, and he is an amazing cook! The weirdest part is that prior to our relationship we both were gym rats who watched everything we ate, now we are the complete opposite. We recently started P90x and have started focusing on healthy eating and we hope this will keep us from being embarassed to be seen on the beach for our honeymoon!

That’s so true! I really have to concentrate on not matching him bite for bite… it’s so hard!

My weight has always been a struggle… when I met my FI I was 2/3 of the way to my goal weight at the time and at the lowest weight of my adult life, though still on the curvy side. In the 6 years we’ve been together I subsequently gained 70lbs (yes, 70!! o.O), lost 35, gained 20 back, and have now lost 8 again, with hopes to lose another 30 or so by our wedding next March.
Getting active, portion control and snacking are the biggies for me. Both of us are such homebodies that we’d rather just stay home and veg than go out and DO something, so getting into an exercise routine has been key. He also loves to snack on cheese and crackers and I’ve had to learn to stay away from that and just encourage us to eat as soon as I get home, rather than snacking and then eating a full-size dinner soon after.
It’s tough, but slowly but surely my efforts are becoming habits and are helping my health, too. And, while he tries to support my weight loss efforts as actively and sensitively as possible, my FI insists he loves me at any size, so that’s good to hear when I fall off the wagon, too.

Luckily my husband and I like to cook, so we don’t eat out that often. Still, in the three months since our wedding, I’ve gained 7 or 8 lbs. Ugh! I’m hoping to lose it soon. I didn’t go on any crazy diet before the wedding, so as long as I get back into a normal, healthy routine, I should be good.

I’ve been known to eat more than him from time to time…and yeah I know all about love chub. How about deployment chub? I swear, the day after he left I turned my attention to pasta–it’s been a sordid love affair ever since.

Yes it happens. All the eating out, being in love, makes you gain weight. Both my FI and I gained weight in the first 6 months of our dating…but we’ve both lost weight since then, and now are training for a marathon before the wedding. We’re also trying to save money for the wedding, which means we eat out much less.

Amen! Preach it lady! 3 years and 10lbs later, I got off the couch and lost about 25lbs. However, it’s slowly creeping back up and I have to keep fighting it. He needs to lose about 10lbs too because he did put on weight too :(
