About Ms. Sloth

Green Wedding = Cheap Wedding

September 8th, 2010 @ 2:01 pm by Ms. Sloth

Mr. S and I are going to try to save as much money as possible with our wedding. Fortunately, a lot of our money-saving plans are also very environmentally friendly.

First off, we’re going to save on as many paper products as possible. We’re going to set up a website on which our guests can RSVP. That way, we’re not paying for extra cards, envelopes and postage, and we won’t be throwing things away after the responses are received and logged.

I love this idea of putting a chalkboard up instead of having escort cards. The same can be done with a menu.

We have no intention of getting programs printed up. I just think that they’re wasteful; plus, our ceremony will be pretty damned short. I’m considering just putting the ceremony run-down on a chalkboard as well.

So far, I’m finding this whole saving-money thing is easier than I expected. We just don’t have expensive tastes, and I have no regrets that we’re not going to spring for an elaborate invitation suite and other paper goods.

Are you trying to have a green wedding? What are you doing to ensure that your wedding is as environmentally-friendly as possible?

Yep, we are doing a green wedding. Our favors are reusable handkerchiefs, and our rsvp was via the website. Some folks whined a little bit but if my grandparents, who are 80, can rsvp via the internet then anyone can!

Oh wow, that sounds great. I may have to do this. It sounds less time consuming, less stressful, and definitely eco-friendly.

Love the escort cards on a chalkboard idea. The other idea I love is doing them on a paned window- one table per pane.

I love the chalkboard idea. I tried to get my hands on some or chalkboard paint, but no yard sale luck and Michael’s was sold out for a while.

I love that chalkboard. We’re making a chalkboard sign so park goers won’t just wander into our wedding. I love me some chalkboards!

danadelphia!! I leave WB for a few days and I come back and you are Ms. Sloth! Congrats, I can’t wait to see all the things you are going to do for your wedding. I love reading the WB blog and I’m sure you will have lots of nice things to add :) BTW, I love your chalkboard idea. I’d already nixed the idea of STD’s and RSVP’s so this also comes in handy :)

We made chalkboards with chalkboard paint on particleboard (careful, it’s really heavy but all the plywood was too rough) and used them for our program, menu, and photobooth instructions (we did open seating, so no escort cards). Our RSVPs were all online and our registry was all donations of money so there was no shipping. All of my jewelry was recycled and conflict free. Our tablecloths were all crowd-sourced or reused. Our decorations were all antiques that we rented from a dealer for 20% of the asking price. And we did the whole wedding for over 100 people for under 4k.

Those are all nice ideas. We have a website too but I think I have to send out RSVP cards because there are a lot of people in my family who are older and not very technologically savvy. What are you doing about that? Giving a phone number too?

@MissMusic: I think we’ll print out a few RSVP cards for those guests who aren’t tech-savvy, except really there are only two guests who aren’t: one of Mr. S’s grandmothers and his great-aunt. And they could easily just call us.

His other grandmother is online all the time - it’s awesome!

We did the website RSVP thing for our wedding. We wrote our own custom website and form. If you do that make sure to have someone outside test it. We got our first RSVP only to have to call them to figure out who wanted what entree and who their +1 was.
We did send physical RSVPs to our grandparents. They have trouble using the internet and my grandmother loves to get real mail.

Okay, just don’t let anyone lean on that :) haha.. There goes your seating chart! I actually think that there is something you can spray on it to make the chalk stick? But very cute!

I love the chalkboard idea. We didnt send RSVP cards, we had a website (ourweddingday.com) and it has been great. We have put multiple events on there for people to RSVP to what they want to come to and decline what they dont, and then I have an accurate count for each event. Even our not so tech savvy family has managed to RSVP, whether on their own or through another friend or family member. Feel free to check out my website, although I have left it pretty basic, you can do alot with it. Mine is adamncalli.ourweddingday.com

Love the chalkboard! I want to do that with our menu instead of printing individual ones. I think I’ll have to print programs though.. the whole interfaith thing might need some explanation.

Definitely worth the try. “Eco friendly” weddings certainly can be “money friendly” also :-)

I love the chalkboard in lieu of escort cards and programs. I think we are doing posters instead of escort cards.

We are! We printed our invites ourselves, and he cut them. They’re 3×8 in a #10 envelope and printed with the rsvp(online) information on the back. We will not be having programs either. I decided against the conventional store dress and made a skirt out of an old wedding dress, old lace curtains(from a yard sale), and fabric I already had laying around. He’s wearing the same shirt he wore when we were married at the courthouse. Anything that we can use that we already have or can borrow is what we’re doing. Trying to be as green as possible, and financially friendly as possible.
