Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

Meet Me Half Way

September 8th, 2010 @ 11:04 am by Mrs. Lioness

Mama Lioness is the antithesis of the stereotypical “mother of the bride.” I grew up in the South and view myself as a Southern belle, but that certainly doesn’t mean I have a Southern family. My family is from New England, and my mom grew up overseas. Her father was a diplomat, so she lived all over…mostly in South America and the Caribbean. Yes, Mama Lioness is actually more Latina than gringa. Hey, maybe that’s why I ended up with a Cubano!

I’m Southern, so I grew up dreaming of grande romances comparable to Scarlett & Rhett’s. I’m Floridian (and a Disney lover), so I also grew up dreaming of Prince Charming whisking me away as woodland creatures frolicked about. She’s slightly more practical than I am. She loves Mr. Lion, she loves that we’re happy, and she’s super excited about the wedding. But when it comes to every detail and every ridiculous expense, it’s hard for her to see why they’re important to me.

On the one hand, it’s nice having her a bit removed. I’m a control freak and I would not function well with an overbearing mother trying to be too involved in my decisions. On the other hand, sometimes I wish she understood why the smallest, dumbest traditions are so important to me.

Fortunately, I’ve found a way to solve this problem. Mama Lioness is super creative. I figured if I could find ways to incorporate her creativity and her individuality, she could be the mother of the bride that I want her to be without changing who she is. I’ve made an effort to stick to that plan, and so far it’s been quite successful; I think she really appreciates it! This is my first act of compromise:

This book was PERFECT for my mom. It’s dry, original, and realistic, yet still heartwarming. She loved it, and it made me really happy to give it to her!

Did you find a fun way to get a family member involved in your planning process?

Having grown up in a Southern household, in which “Gone With The Wind” was shoved into my hands for summer reading while I still had braces on my teeth, I have to object to the notion that Scarlett and Rhett had any kind of romance that a sane person would seek to emulate! But I’m glad you managed to find a good way to involve your mother, I think my sister and one of my bridesmaids had similar experiences when they picked up a book on bridesmaiding and what they could do to help that would interest them.

@LittlestBirds: Haha EXCELLENT point. I love gwtw because passionate, crazy, dramatic love makes for good entertainment…but disclaimer: scarlet is crazy!

I love my mom’s level of involvement. She’s willing to go to all vendor meetings that Mr. E can’t go to. She also loves seeing my finished projects, and sometimes likes to send inspiration pics that she find online.

My mom says she doesn’t care about anything and that I can do anything I want but then seems to have opinions about everything. We have determined its best for her to just let me do my thing and she can only say positive things lol

My mom has luckily been super involved, I’ve tried to incorporate her skills, like shes making the cookies for our oot bags. They are my favorite.

My mom is so over-bearing and has opinions about everything, and since she’s paying we clash a lot. Its a clever idea to let your mom take creative control because I firmly believe delegating is how we get stuff done in a wedding!
