About Mrs. Socks

What I DON’T Want to DIY

September 9th, 2010 @ 4:53 pm by Mrs. Socks

Filling out paperwork is a part of life. A part of being an adult. There have been a ton of contracts that I’ve had to look over and sign during the wedding process, I have to fill out medical forms for any new doctor I go to see, I have to fill out forms at work or at the car dealership when my car makes noises…forms are not a fun part of life, but I do it because I’m an adult and I have to.

But right now…I don’t wanna.

Since Mr. Socks and I are getting legally married next weekend(!!!), I’ve started giving a lot of thought to the process of changing my name, combining bank accounts and bills, and o-mi-gawd it’s overwhelming. (Shouldn’t this process be electronically automatic by now? Shouldn’t I just have a chip in my head that sends a signal to everyone and everything, informing them I’ve changed my name? No? Well I think I should!)

Enter MissNowMrs.com:

That’s right. I’m shelling out $30 just because I don’t wanna hunt down the papers myself. I’m shelling out $30 because it’s one less wedding related thing for me to obsess over and worry about.

And I really really hope it’s worth it.

Here are the forms you get for $30. They give them to you and let you fill them out, print them out on your own, and send them to the appropriate places:

  1. Social Security
  2. IRS
  3. US Passport
  4. US Postal Office
  5. Driver’s License
  6. Voter Registration
  7. Bank Notification Letter
  8. Credit Card Notification Letter
  9. Mortgage Notification Letter
  10. Utility Notification Letter
  11. Medical Notification Letter
  12. Insurance Notification Letter
  13. Professional License Notification Letter
  14. Investment Notification Letter
  15. Other Notifications (not sure what, but they have this on their site)

I probably won’t need all of those forms, but I’ll be using the majority of them, they’ll all be in one place, and it’ll save me hours of research. No, it’s not having mom fill them out for me (but if you want to Momma Socks, I’m all for it!), but it is like having a little guidance when I just don’t feel like I have enough energy to do it myself.

I’m going to give it a shot and let you know of my experience with it after the whole thing is done. Since the civil ceremony is next weekend (!!!) I’ll start the process ASAP to get as many of the forms out of the way as possible.

Would you consider using a service like Miss Now Mrs or will you hunt down the forms yourself? Married bees—did you find the process of changing your name easy or overwhelming?

I’m using MissNowMrs as well. I’m partway through the process and keep putting off the remainder. My hope is that I won’t have to physically go into the Social Security Office or DMV this way, but that’s probably dreaming. My husband is changing his middle name, and unfortunately that’s going to require going to court anyway.

Wow, awesome website. I love it. I will probably use it as well. Sounds exhausting.

I came very close to using that but ultimately decided to just take a very, very long time to change everything, little by little…

I kind of wish I could have stopped you. Social Security requires a field office visit and that cannot be avoided. So procuring that form wasn’t an issue. There is no need to do anything at all with the IRS, they get their information from Social Security. (Please trust me. I’ve worked there for many years.) There is also nothing to file with the Post Office and Driver’s License forms vary from state to state but I’m pretty sure they all require you to show up in person. And most of those notification letters. If you can’t, then you have to show up and do something in person. There are not a host of forms to gather and handle. And I hate that people are paying for this without realizing that.

Being an Encore I’ve changed my name more than once. I know of what I speak.

I did them all individually myself and it actually wasn’t that bad - but I might be crazy because I really love filling out forms :D

That should say “And most of those notification letters are pointless. Most places only require a phone call, possibly a form specific to that company, and possibly a fax of your new driver’s license.” Then it should carry on as it does.

@Encore: Thanks for the scoop!! That is one thing that I’m kind of dreading. Paper work is not my fav thing and switching names will be weird (I’m imagining anyways!) :)

I didn’t use a site and it worked out just fine. I didn’t do anything until the copy of the recorded marriage license was mailed to us by the county registrar. If yours isn’t mailed to you, you’ll probably have to go down to the county office to buy a copy.

With my marriage certificate in hand, I filled out the form at Social Security and didn’t print anything out first. You absolutely have to go there first (less crowded on days other than Monday) because other institutions (like the DMV) check the SSN database. The new SS card arrived in about a week.

Wielding my new SS card and the marriage license, I went to the DMV and filled out the forms they handed me, which included voter registration. I’m sure I could’ve printed that one out too but it wouldn’t have really been any faster. I actually got out of the DMV in about 90 minutes which must be a record in Southern California when you don’t have an appointment.

Once I had a new driver’s license (about 10 days), the new SS card, and the marriage license, I was able to start attacking banks and other establishments. Bank of America needed to see the real thing, not just copies, and they are relatively incompetent so it took two trips to the bank and a few phone calls to get everything fixed. Chase, on the other hand, were much faster at the bank and everything arrived quickly. (I’ve been with B of A since college but our joint account is at Chase because hubby was at WaMu and they got bought out.)

Citibank has my student loans and they had a separate form for me to fill out. I then had to fax them a copy of the marriage certificate and their fancy form. But they decided they couldn’t read the fax well enough and sent me three letters in two days to let me know that they needed me to mail a copy instead.

I also have ING online accounts and a T. Rowe Price Roth IRA. Each of these banks/brokerages had their own personal forms as well.

All of the utilities I’ve managed to change my name over the phone.

I still haven’t changed my last name with Discover card or Lowe’s because I’m lazy and never use those cards. I suppose I’ll get to it before we start trying to get a mortgage.

The IRS will figure it out from social security and I’m not sure why I would need to tell the post office unless I moved. My doctors will figure it out the next time I go see them.

My health, vision, and dental insurances all had separate forms as well. My company uses a separate company to take care of that for us and luckily one of their representatives was able to guide me through the process because the forms were quite complicated. I don’t think a generic form letter would have sufficed.

My professional licenses also required separate forms. Luckily, both were up for renewal the same month as the wedding and I just threw the forms and a copy of the marriage certificate in with my renewal payments.

It was a ginormous pain, but it’s totally worth having nearly all of it done just three months after the wedding. Now if only I could remember to introduce myself correctly on the phone. Or if our new secretary could figure out how to change the office directory on the voicemail so people calling me weren’t totally confused.

Honestly if anyone ever wants advice on name changes, I’m more than willing to help. I’ve worked at Social Security for 11 years now. And I’ve changed my own name 3 times in two different states. I’m qualified to advise and I’m free! ;) Just PM me.

I paid the fee for that site, and found it totally useless - I ended up doing it all myself! It was such a waste. :-( Sorry to be a downer, but I just want to save other brides the money!

Ah I bookmarked this page as soon as I heard about it! I can’t wait to hear your experience with it, I’ve heard both good and bad!

I too have heard that site isn’t worth it. I did it all myself by visiting the places, which you have to do anyways. And there weren’t that many forms to fill out once you visit the places. For banks, airline miles cards, hotel frequent traveler cards, you usually need to fax them a copy of your marriage certificate. No forms are needed for them.

I’m still a long way from my wedding date, so I started making a list of all the places I need to change my name and/or add one of us as a joint owner. I’m super nerdy, so I’m putting it in chronological order too. :-)

So far there are about 40 things on the list, including car titles, my job, insurance, library card, and hotel/airline/grocery store loyalty programs. The easiest way for me to start making the list was to go through everything in my wallet (you know all the stuff in the back you never clean out?). Good luck to everyone going through the process!

That seems helpful but I get nervous giving all my info (and my parent’s info as needed for SS card) to anyone but the actual recipient.

I think I’ll just go thru everything slowly by myself. It would be nice if you could combine your name change with your marriage license and only fill out one form.

Proof once again that men maintain a majority in the government. If the ladies were in charge you’d be be able to do everything at once…because we multi-task. :)

I used the site, but I’d recommend just getting the basic version instead of the complete. The basic had all the forms I needed, and I found it way helpful, not just because it helped me find/fill out the forms, but also for the print out “bring these things with you” lists for each spot along the way.

Ugh one more thing to think about! Why isn’t there just a store you can go to do to this?? I want the easiest way out…esp. with moving to another country right after the wedding. Eek…thanks Miss Socks for giving me something else to have nightmares about! Just kidding, I still love you.

I used this service and thought it was a waste of money for all the reasons @encore mentioned. The most annoying part is not filling out the forms, but actually going to the SS office, the DMV, the Notary Public, etc. in person.

Ugh what a pain in the neck it all sounds like. I’m doing it all next month. Good luck with the process, try not to, you know, slam your head in a wall or anything :D Let us know how this goes, too, cuz if it’s worth it I’m totally doing it!

There i no doubt in my mind I will be using this site. I hate all this legal crap so I’m not chancing screwing this up and my name ending up one thing for one agency and another name to another agency lol. Even though we’re getting married in October, I’m not changing my name until after the new year because we’re leaving for our honeymoon Christmas day and I don’t want to chance my passport not arriving on time with my new name!
