A Subtle Tribute for Unsubtle Fans

September 9th, 2010 @ 10:46 am by Mrs. Lioness

I don’t remember exactly when, but around Christmas break we started discussing dates. We knew we wanted Spring 2011 because we were both graduating in Spring 2010. We knew we wanted a Saturday because so many of our guests would be coming from out of state. So I whipped out my iPhone and took a look at the calendar.  I decided March might be too cold and May would be too close to three of my bridesmaids’ graduations (more about how incredibly brilliant and talented my friends are later). That left April.

I immediately checked the vitals: Passover is the 19th through the 25th. Easter Sunday is the 24th. The NCAA March Madness Finals are on the 4th. That left the 2nd, the 9th, the 16th, and the 30th. My mom didn’t like the 2nd because it is too close to my birthday. I didn’t like the 16th or the 30th because those are too close to actual wedding season (and finals for my lovely bmaids, who are still in school). So that left the 2nd and the 9th. Then I had an epiphany.

Do you know who that is? It’s Jackie Robinson. He broke the color barrier in baseball. Now, I’ve told you that Mr. Lion and I are huge baseball fans. I’m a Sox fan and he’s a Yankees fan. This is the source of all of our arguments.

Regardless of who you root for in baseball, integration is something we can all agree on. Jackie’s number is 42, so April 2nd would be a wonderful tribute to him and all he did for the game.

I was psyched. We had set a date AND discovered a fun way to incorporate our love for baseball into our wedding day. Plus, Mr. Lion could never forget an anniversary date like that!

How did you choose your date? Does your date have a certain significance behind it?

Too cute, those pictures! I’m glad you managed to find a way to incorporate your love of baseball into your wedding day. I had to schedule my date around my younger brother’s swim competition, and neglected to schedule it around the Gator games. Luckily for me, it’s the non-SEC game in the middle of the season. Could be worse. Could be UGA or FSU.

Ours is New Year’s Eve, for similar reasons of not having many other dates that worked for us! It’s always been a favorite holiday of ours and now we get to throw our best New Year’s party yet. :)

We are date twins! :) My fiance and I are getting married on 4/2 in Lakewood, CO. 4/2 is the anniversary of when we first started dating.

Congrats to you!

I always wanted an April 1st wedding, but would have had to wait several years for an April 1st Saturday. Plus too many family members wanted to go to spring training baseball games as well as our wedding, so we went with a March date this past year.

I have to give you major props for having the courage to “intermarry”, and I love the story behind your date! My fiance and I met and became friends because of our shared love of the Sox (we argue about who the bigger fan is, but it’s me obviously) and we’re incorporating some Fenway love into our wedding. We chose our winter date for a number of reasons, but the fact that it won’t interfere with baseball season is definitely a bonus!

That’s a great date (I’m not biased or anything since it’s my birthday and all…:)) We wanted to choose the 15th of a month since that was when we started dating (Would have made it easy for my FI to remember) but we decided to go with November 6 because we both love fall and it wasn’t during the holiday season and it is in the “off season” for vendors.

Great idea! Our date had no significance; it just worked for our teacher sisters and college student brothers and was as quick as possible.

Oh what a cute way of deciding on your date! Great idea! Our date is 10-10-10 which is basically the most kickass date ever, in my opinion. lol. Plus we’ll be living in Lausanne Switzerland, which is where the IOC (International Olympic Comitee) is based, and that’s like a perfect score! (Well before the olympics got all complicated with their scoring…) Now it’s just a perfect score on DWTS! lol I love that you guys are sports rivals ;)

I love that! We’re getting married the week after you… and we chose it because the venue had that date and sometime in December. Um - we’ll go with April!

I love the Robinson connection!! As an avid Yanks fan, props to you and the mister for the “intermarriage” (like BostonBaby said)… I dated a Sox fan for a few months and it was BAD NEWS. I instead found happiness with my sports oblivious FI. :) We’re getting married on 6/30/12.. our 7 year dating anniversary!

That is an awesome way to pick a date. Jakie Robinson really did a lot for baseball. Mr. Aquabride is a Red Sox fan as well…I’m a Rays fan.
We picked our date, October 1, because I didn’t want a Saturday and I’m a huge Disney Geek. And it’s the 34th anniversary of Epcot Center opening..and the 39th for the whole WDW resort as a whole and Magic Kingdom.
Mr. Aquabride just didn’t care, but for him and his computer geeky side in Binary it’s an “&”.
So in a way it worked both our geeky-ness into one day.

too bad the 15th was a friday, then you would have had the same anniversary as jackie robinson’s mlb debut!

we have a tentative date, pending proposal of course. it’ll be my dad’s birthday. he was really looking forward to being at our wedding but he passed away this year. i thought it would be a great way to have him there in spirit. :-)
