Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Mr. B was a real trooper when we went to New York for the Wedding Library’s Wedding Party. When I won the tickets (from DIYBride—thanks again!!), he immediately started planning a romantic weekend getaway to the Big Apple; and here I thought he wouldn’t want to go.

He was probably just as excited as I was when we first arrived at the New York Palace because we were anxious to see what all the hype was about. After about an hour or two of walking from room to room, meeting various vendors, tasting various desserts, and talking about invitations, my poor guy started to get bored.

It was also getting very crowded, mind you, with women on a mission to hunt out all the potential wedding details there and enter every contest and giveaway available. Poor Mr. B was a bit overwhelmed and, well, ready to leave. Of course, I was nowhere near ready to go! Like the other brides there, I didn’t want to miss a beat. But luckily for me, we ran into this guy (the one in the background of this picture):

Man to man, he must have seen the exhaustion and boredom on Mr. B’s face, and he called him over. The guy suggested he try on some of their suits. This company (I’m so, so sorry I don’t remember their name) specializes in fun, hip, and unique suits for weddings. While we had pretty much (or so we thought) decided to have our men in tuxedos, Mr. B was intrigued by this guy’s enthusiasm. I suppose he was excited to have a bit of attention, too, since up until this point it was, “oh, bride this and that” and no love for the grooms.

It’s a good thing, too, because the few minutes Mr. B spent trying on suit jackets bought me about another hour in vendorville! Not just that, but Mr. B really liked their stuff, and we quickly decided that tuxedos would be too stiff for our early-afternoon wedding.

Did I mention brides were walking by saying, “He’s cute,” and “That looks good,” left and right? I think if it had been up to Mr. B, he would have stayed there for the rest of the day, modeling!

What a cutie, right? Looking good, if I don’t say so myself!

The reason we thought about tuxedos in the first place was because Mr. B liked the idea of something formal, and he’s really big on black. I am, too, actually. I’m a big fan of Johnny Cash (a.k.a. the man in black), which is who I told Mr. B he looked like the night we took the picture below. But again, black might be too dark for our early-afternoon, spring wedding.

I’m a big fan of gray. It’s a lot softer than black, obviously, and I think it’s a good color for spring weddings. It’s not as informal as a tan suit, but it’s not as formal as a tuxedo. I think gray works well with pink and with green (our colors). Not to mention, Mr. B really likes gray suits. He also wants something he’s going to wear again, and if he got a tuxedo, the opportunities he’d have to wear it after the wedding would be minimal. Here are a few inspiration photos for our menswear file:

Tan isn’t so bad, either! I like tan. I think it’s fitting for a spring wedding, and it goes really well with our colors. It’s just informal. I always see tan suits at beach weddings, and the guys are wearing flipflops. That’s not going to work for us! I still love this look, though:

What kind of suit is your groom wearing? Do you think certain colors are more fitting for spring weddings?

Love the gray suit idea! Hubs bought a suit rather than wear a tux cuz it was cheaper than renting a tux!! Now he has it for formal night on the cruises we try to go on once a year, plus more formal weddings. we will definitely get our use out of them even though he isn’t the suit wearing type.

And yes, Mr B does look pretty good as a model!! ;)

@MrsSl82be: Aww yay! I will pass the message along! I like the suit idea too. We both think it’s more practical.

We’re doing gray suits too :) Beach wedding, but I am NOT a fan of tan suits and neither is the Mr. My FI wears suits every day, so he will get wear out of this one again.

I think that gray will look great in the spring - it’s softer than black and complements all of the spring colors nicely.

I wanted tan but Mr TM said no way, jose! So then the suits were supposed to be grey but they ended looking black (apparently charcoal grey is not a normal grey!)

I really like grey suits too! We ended up going with black suits for our wedding, but we told all of the groomsmen to wear whatever black suit (in good condition!) that they had.

We bought Mr. FF a more modern cut (fitted) suit, and he loved how it was tailored to fit *him* (much like our wedding gowns are!) rather than just renting a tux off the rack.

Mr. S is wearing a navy blazer and khakis because he wanted to go for comfort.

We’re going for a tan linen vest and pants for our October wedding with a dark orange/brown tie. I agree, tan can look very casual, but my FI has very dark skin so I love tan on him. Ultimately, just like us girls and the dress, it’s about what makes him feel good! It looks like Mr. B had fun playing dress-up.

Oh yes I love gray! We are doing that for our August wedding and my FI is totally into it, even though he was all about the traditional black tuxedo at first!

He looks so good in all of those jackets!!! Quite the GQ guy you have! I agree that the black is too black for a spring wedding.

Oooo Mr. B is looking quite dapper in that light blue jacket! I’m not a fan of tuxedos myself and like you, I love black (and Johnny Cash!). I hope to put Mr. G in a black vest, black trousers, and a black skinny tie with a crisp white shirt.
