I’ll Be Surprised When I Find Out

September 9th, 2010 @ 4:10 pm by Mrs. Zebra

I’m awesome at ruining people’s surprises for me. I think it’s a combination of being a superbrat, wanting to always be in the know, and my childhood dream of becoming a detective. I was that kid who could unwrap a gift and wrap it back up so you couldn’t tell it had been opened. I knew every floorboard and step that creaked in my house in order to sneak upstairs on Christmas Eve and secretly watch my mom wrap gifts. I always found where my mother hid her gifts, until she started puttin’ them at Aunt Flo’s, and believe me, I tried my luck getting into her house. The best surprise discovery, however, happened for my 16th birthday party. My mother left the DJ receipt buried in an envelope in the back of her scarf drawer out in plain sight! Of course, that was after I yelled embarrassing untruths about my friends in the high school hallways trying to force it out of them.

My ONE request for the bridal shower was that I know the date, but apparently my bestest, most sweetest, friend in the whole wide world forgot how embarrassing the 16th-birthday-party secret was for her. Perhaps she enjoyed the torture so much that she wanted to go through it again. Or, maybe, just maybe, she forgot—because she has put a gag order on the entire thing. HMMMMMM? What shall I do to uncover this nagging secret? Nobody is safe! You here me, ladies? NOBODY!

It’s not that I am ungrateful; quite the contrary, actually. However, nothing is funny about not looking your best at an event when everyone else is beautified. Especially since I’m usually the one who is told she is overdressed for an occasion. It pains me to think that people think that it’s funny. I get mad at those who take joy in other people’s jeans. Oh god, I sound stupid. I’m sorry, but it’s a pretty passionate subject. At least bring me a dress! How do you know it will fit? You don’t! So you must tell me. Tell me now, dammit!

Any other surprise-ruiners out there? Tell me your best surprise-ruining story with all the dirty details.

Oh Im like this! Poor Mr E…he goes to such great lengths to surprise me but I somehow usually manage to ruin it. For example, this week a package arrived that I knew was something he had ordered for me, and I wasnt allowed to open it yet…but I googled the PO Box address on the back and found out what store it came from! *hangs head* it’s a disease, I swear.

Hahaha I am bad at waiting for surprises as well…I used to fish through Mom’s wallet at Christmas time to read receipts…no one thinks of hiding the receipts! I also may have snuck peaks at presents that Mr. L has gotten me at Christmas..though he is pretty bad at keep secrets and surprising me.

I just have friends and a husband who are as readable as a book. They’re all awful at surprises. I was crazy impressed when my husband surprised the crap out of me with his proposal, and again when my best friend surprised us both with an engagement party.

My best friend is like you and it’s pretty annoying actually. It sucked the joy out of planning her bridal and baby showers because she has to know everything. My feelings on that is, if you must have so much control, plan it yourself. Trust that your friends know you well enough to know that you would like to look decent. Trust that they have enough intelligence and creativity to tell you you are going somewhere where you have to dress up so that you will be appropriately dressed for your shower. Let it go and let them surprise you.

I’m the same way! I try telling my family, that I’m just too smart :) Recently my godmother flew from Japan to Nevada to surprise me at my bridal shower. I got my best friend drunk and got the info out of her. But then I had to fake my surprise (but not my happiness!). I sometimes wish I could not snoop, but I can’t help it. I am however letting my matrons of honor surprise me with a bachelorette party. But that’s mostly because I’m sick of planning!

@MsBunting: OHHHHH that’s a plan I have not yet tried! I get excited for the anticipation. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!

Bahaha once.. I went to sneak a peak at our christmas gifts (outside my parents bedroom laid out on the fireplace unwrapped) but the friggin door to downstairs was locked! Those arse holes! So I went and found my moms keys.. and tried the keys and lo and behold.. one worked! I got a sneak peak at all my gifts and even went to back bed with one of my dolls :) I was like 5. I’m glad I’m not the only sneak!

Our Jack and Jill is being held at a surprise location and I do not like this so I know exactly how you feel. Time to do some detective work…

I’m actually in the exact same boat right now. My shower is being planned and I hate not knowing. SO my fiancee and I are playing a trick on everyone. The day we think it is (which we got an invitation to a kids bday party on a sunday at noon at a hall) - we told them we had other plans and keep asking the moms to go out to breakfast to get them to crack. It’s sort of fun but they aren’t giving in!

I am the worst. I just ask everyone, I snoop every where. Everyone knows it though, its kind of a running joke that no one in my family can keep secrets. When my fiance was planning to propose he had to obsessively clear all tracks of shopping. He said he didn’t even use our home computers to research because he knew I would find any thing.

When I was 15 my friends and family were planning a surprise party for my twin sister and I. We totally knew because we always know…but we had them totally tricked that we had no clue. Unfortunately the night before, while sleeping over my friend who planned the party’s house, a girl left her an answering machine message (the old school ones with the tapes! haha) saying “just wanted to let you know I can’t make it to the surprise party tomorrow!” My friend literally lept at the machine and slammed it off. My sister and I just awkwardly pretended we didn’t know but the surprise was totally blown.
