Tutu Meets Traditional

September 9th, 2010 @ 8:43 am by Mrs. Brooch

A few months ago, I entertained the idea of having our flower girl wear a tutu, like one of these:

Here’s my little sister, the flower girl:

While I’m sure she would love to wear a tutu, I don’t know that the look will fit in with the rest of the wedding party and our traditional wedding. It’s really hard to say at this point since we don’t have bridesmaids dresses picked out yet (heck, we don’t even have my dress picked out yet), but I’m not sure the mothers and grandmothers will go for the idea.

I needed to find something that had the look and feel of a tutu—to appease my little sister and my desire for something unique—but that wasn’t a full-out costume. Then I stumbled across these adorable outfits:

Aren’t they cute? They’re the perfect mix of tutu and traditional, right? What is your flower girl wearing and how did you decide?

How cute! I love the idea of letting her have a little fun, but still keeping her dress fit the rest of your party’s style.

For ours, I showed her mom a picture of my dress, and told her that whatever she wanted to buy Parker (the FG) would be fine, as long as it was all ivory. She ended up finding the perfect dress for $20 at a local thrift store!

What an adorable little girl! She’ll look so cute no matter what you dress her in.

If I were your flower girl I would be super excited to wear any of those outfits. I think it’s so sweet and cute that your little sister can feel a little bit like a Princess with you on your BIG day.

Those are awesome! Our Flower Dog wore a tie because he’s a boy and our Ring Dog wore a bow tie. Yeah, we had our dogs in our wedding. It was awesome!

Our flower girl is wearing a more traditional dress - they didn’t have anything this cute at the bridal store! It is sweet though, long with little tufts in the skirt.

One thing we really wanted was for the color of her dress to match the bridesmaid’s dresses, and not just have her in white or cream. Her dress will be navy blue, just like the “big girls” are wearing. :-)

I was set on having our flower girl in a tutu as well. When I mentioned it to my (now) hubby, he put the kibosh on it. Honestly, it was one of the few things he spoke up about wedding-wise, so the least I could do was honor his request. I ended up picking a FG dress that was a mixture of Picture #1 and #3 (Gymboree, off ebay). No offense to anyone who does the tutus (since I still think they are adorable), but I have to agree that the hybrid dress made for a really nice wedding party shot. Less costumey, but still a little out-of-the-box.

@goodbuddy: That’s what I’m thinking about - the pictures. As much as I love the tutu look, we only have one flower girl and I don’t want her to stand out like a sore thumb. I thought these were a good combo like you said, still out-of-the box!

Our flower girl wore a yellow tutu and the rest of my bridal party were in formal red dresses. I don’t think you have to worry too much about the flower girl matching-they look so adorable no one will notice.

I like the top one with the parasol and the second one with the ribbon sash.

My mom and I found this lovely cotton, white fabric with a little bit of sweet texture to it. We decided that she would make their dresses in just a regular sundress pattern. I added a large red ribbon sash. We’ll find some shoes for them and then I made some headbands with white ribbon, pearl strands, and red flowers.

Many times people find flower girl dresses that are similar to the wedding dress. I say go for what you LOVE. :)

We were going to go with tutu dresses for our flower girls, but it just so happened that Easter dresses were more readily available and a cheaper option for us. The tutus are adorable, though…makes me wish I would have stuck with this option!

Those etsy finds are so cute!

My “flower girl” will be wearing a suit or tux. My 18-will-be-19 year old brother (who is also an usher) has decided he will be the flower girl as I won a flower girl kit and he wants the tiara and wand. I think it will really go with the lip ring he wants to get now that’s he’s in college :/

I love these!! I actually made hot pink tutu’s for my three flower girls. We are having somewhat of a nontraditional wedding, where the groomsmen are wearing converse, and so the flower girls are having bedazzled converse. I loved the idea and its something they all loved and can definatly wear again! I like the more formal dresses you found, those would blend better with your style i think.

I think they are super cute. I jsut started planning and I am thinking about ways to work yellow into the flowergirls dresses and this just might be the winner. Thanks for a great idea!

We used the example of the feather skirt dress (the first picture) and made the dress. Instead of tulle, we made the base dress out of dupioni silk and made a feather apron that ties on with the ribbon sash. My niece is so excited to wear the “feather dress!”
