Wedding Splurges

September 9th, 2010 @ 8:15 am by Mrs. Elephant

There were a few splurge items for the wedding that I mentally listed as very nice to have if we have room in the budget, but not totally necessary. The first was photography, and I can’t wait for Lynn Michelle to shoot our engagements, rehearsal, and wedding! Another splurge was uplighting for the reception.

I think the lighting really does change the venue and the feel of the room. When researching uplighting, we found that a lot of DJs offer it along with their music/MC role. We have begun the DJ search and are hoping to kill two birds with one stone by booking a DJ that includes a lighting option.

Another splurge for the wedding that we really want to fit into the budget is a photobooth.

The first pictures Mr. E and I have together were taken in a mall photobooth on our third date. That photo strip still hangs on our fridge to this day. As you can guess, we’ve changed a little since then.

There are a couple of cool aspects of the photobooth that really drew us in:

  • First off, none of our friends have had one at their weddings, so I think it would be something new for them to enjoy.
  • The booths that we are looking at all provide a CD of all the pictures taken that night, so we can go back after the wedding and look at all of our crazy-fun guests
  • We could also include double printouts that night. This way our guests would be able to take a copy home with them, and the other would be left for us. We could possibly put them all into an album for us to enjoy for years to come.

We are currently working on fitting the booth into our budget as well as our venue—depending on our final guest list there may not be enough room to fit the booth in the room with all the guests and buffet, in which case we would have to move it to the bar area or right outside the ballroom.

Our last splurge/wish-list item is videography. The videography topic was not included in the initial planning talks among Mr. E, my parents, and me. We figured that we could just relive the big day from all the wonderful pictures our photographer will take. At the second meeting with our planner, Kathie asked about videographers, and Mama Elephant piped up that videography was on her wish list if we could fit it in the budget.

I thought to myself, who would really want to watch that video? It would probably be a waste of money, and only we (well more so me then Mr. E) and possibly my parents would watch it. But after thinking about it more and checking out some of the awesome videos on local videographers’ websites and ones on Weddingbee, like Mrs. Scissors amazing video, I was hooked. Even if it didn’t get played a million times, it would be so wonderful to actually hear Mr. E and me say our vows on that day!

We’re still doing our research to see if we can find a decent videographer that won’t break the bank.

What are you splurging on for your wedding? What’s on your wedding wish list?

For us a videographer was a must (and a bit of a splurge) and so was the photographer. I feel like if we are spending so much money on this “one day” then we should make sure the memories of it are ones we can have forever. What better way to remember than looking at the pictures and watching the video from it? And btw, I love those lighting pics!!

We splurged on uplighting and a photo booth for our wedding, too! The booth was a hit and the lighting really made a huge impact on how amazing our reception looked. So, obviously I’m a big fan of both. :)

The one thing I really regret is not hiring a pro videographer. I thought that we might not watch the video after the wedding, but I am constantly watching the little snippets that we did get from our Flip video camera, and find myself wishing we had pro footage. Just my two cents! :)

Our photographer was definitely a splurge, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I do not want to look at my pictures with regret, and I know ours delivers in a big way.

Yup, the uplighting was our big splurge. It was one thing I really wanted from the get-go, but one of those things you don’t really “need.” Ya know?

We did uplighting through our DJ and it was (what i thought) super cheap! for 4 uplights in each corner of the tent and an uplight behind the cake it was a total of $175!!!! SOLD!! the DJ also has the photobooth! so we killed 3 birds with 1 stone on that one!

@Swiss Miss to Bee: I agree, definitely not a “need” but a major want after seeing awesome pictures, and then actually seeing our venue with uplighting.

@jmcd103: WOW, all 3 with one? That’s awesome and probably so much cheaper than using a couple different vendors.

The one thing I reallly splurged on was our cake topper. We had it handmade by someone I found on the net - and it cost over $425! It was made to look exactly like us and put in Chicago Cubs uniforms (our fave team) - and yet our cake itself was a sheet cake for only $50!! Lol
But it’s obviously something to cherish forever and on a shelf along with our sand ceremony vase. But everyone loved it!
As for videographer - I HAD to have one as my degree is in TV production…and we should be getting it back in 2 more weeks…I can’t wait!

I want all those things and more! The only thing is we don’t quite have room to splurge….I guess if anything were splurged on it would be our venue.

Your splurge list sounds a LOT like mine. Except there was never any doubt that we had to have the best photographer we could possibly get. Luckily, our venue is giving us a pretty good deal on uplighting. I would love a photobooth but videography just got bumped in the list of must haves so it is looking like that wish is going out of the window!

Oh, and liquor is on my wish list. Currently, our open bar only has wine and beer.

Uplighting was my black hole purchase. I wasn’t going to do it, but I got carried away at a meeting. I fell for the sell. Totally worth it!

@JuneBride_26June2010: That’s sounds like an amazing cake topper keepsake! We have one cake topper and I’m totally tempted to get another for the groom’s cake!

@Miss Zebra: HAHA, that’s what happened. We started with uplighting and ended up adding in the pinspotting because we were sold on how great it will look.

You might want to try a DIY photobooth, a la http://offbeatbride.com/2010/08/diy-photo-booth. I haven’t purchased the software yet, but I intend to!
