Bridesmaids’ Dresses

September 10th, 2010 @ 6:39 pm by Mrs. Elephant

When it comes to the lovely ladies that will be standing up for me on my big day, the only thing I knew I wanted in their dresses was that the girls felt beautiful. I tried to narrow it down into brands/designers and a length and then they could pick the dress that best fits their body type. Since I had some extra time on my hands, I made a PowerPoint with the pictures of the different dresses and the prices I could find online.

The first set of dresses are J Crew, Silk Chiffon in Vintage Blue. I think these can be wore again easily, but may not be dressy enough for the wedding.

Next up are the Bill Levkoff knee length dresses. These seem to be a favorite of the girls and I like that there were several style options to choose from. The dresses will be European Satin in Royal Blue.

The next set are also Bill Levkoff, but tea length instead. I personally am not a fan of my thick legs (thanks genetics and ballet/track) so I wasn’t sure if they would like a little more length to their dresses. These also all come in European Satin, in Royal Blue.

Last but not least is the David’s Bridal selection. When MOH Navy and I went to David’s Bridal after Christmas we spent some time looking at colors and fabrics for the BM dresses. We didn’t realize how short they were until we saw these pictures online. I think all the girls prefer dresses that hit at the knee or a little below. We looked at the Horizon color in Cotton or Cotton Sateen.

On our recent trip to Denton Bridal Co. mom and I took a look around the bridesmaid’s dresses and found the 4 knee length Bill Levkoff. I think they look awesome in person and can’t wait to get an idea of what they will look like on the girls when they come at the end of the month for the Bridesmaids Summit!

Did you do some research on the bridesmaid’s dresses, or just let the girls pick what they wanted?

I just wore the JCrew Sophia in Vintage blue for my FSIL’s wedding in July. I received a LOT of compliments and the dress was very comfy! I will wear this again.

The extent of my bridesmaid dress research was basically to help my sisters find cute dresses they liked. I gave them a “color palette” and a general idea of the feel of the wedding and let them loose. They picked their colors, their dresses, their shoes. I just sent them links of cute dresses when I happened upon them through my basic blog checks. But definitely didn’t go out of my way to find anything. Just something I wasn’t wanting to stress about. One has found her dress already and its awesome!

I am a big fan of JCrew. I plan on sending my girls there to get whatever is on the sale site. I’ll just give them a few directions, i.e., length, color, type of material and that’s it. I once had to pay $225 for a JCrew BM dress. Luckily, I live in NYC and went for their sample sale and got it for $60. I returned the $225 one immediately :)
Hence, I do like the JCrew dresses (sorry you don’t think they are dressy enough. They are classic/classy though) I also like the Bill Levkov. I am not a big fan of tea length dresses. I think they sit awkward on me, although funny enough, I’m wearing one right now :)

I like the Bill levkoff dresses. I did the same as you. I let my girls pick wither knee or tea length bill levkoff dresses. Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong color. It looked ok in the end 9different shades of green so it wsn’t that different, just not a color I woul dhave ever picked). Aside from the color fiasco, they looked great and everyone was glad that they could pick a style that they liked best and felt good in. I thought they looked beautiful

I know you’re doing a blue thing, but the jewel tones in those dresses really inspire me. Those are some cute cuts too!

@bRooklynRocks: I was a huge fan of the J Crew, but in the end it also ended up being a size thing, not all of my girls would have been able to fit into them.

@Mustang: @Miss Meerkat: Hehe, Mama E is a real trooper for my blogging needs ;)

Yay Mama E! Adorable :) My favourites are both Bill Levkoff, the one-shoulder dress and the tea-length with the straps.

Side note: I LOVE DENTON BRIDAL CO.! That is where I bought my dress and I’ve looked at BM dresses there… but haven’t made any decisions yet. I’m also looking at a combination of David’s Bridal dresses in chiffon in “marine”.

I like the idea of having multi-colors. It adds such a kick to your photos, and the girls can pick a color that compliments their skin tone. All those dresses are really pretty.

I’m impressed with your research. I had such a specific idea in mind, but I made sure I chose a style that is universally flattering. I’ve seen the dress on all my girls and they look amazing. I can’t wait to see what you choose at teh bridesmaid summit!

I tried to let my BM’s pick the dress, but it totally didn’t work and I had to just go into a bridal shop and have them try on stuff and all buy one dress. You’re really thorough, love the choices! Bravo.

Have you looked at Ann Taylor? My bridesmaids are wearing the silk taffeta dresses in deep plum, but they have a beautiful vintage ocean blue color, dresses are knee length with pockets and sashes, and there are a few different necklines in each fabric. My girls absolutely love them, and there are always coupon discounts (one until the end of September) so they got them for $150.

@Miss OBG: We have picked out their dresses, but I may check out Ann Taylor for a rehearsal or shower dress!
