Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Aisle Decorations

September 10th, 2010 @ 10:42 am by Mrs. Brooch

While a lot of big decisions are still pending, we’re making a lot of headway on the small stuff: things like whether to have a DJ or band, a buffet or seated dinner, and how we want our ceremony site to look. We stumbled across a video of a wedding at our venue (Oxon Hill Manor), and we weren’t impressed at all with the way the ceremony looked. I can’t share the video because that would be way too rude, but just to give you an idea…

They had an aisle runner and it was plain white. Everyone from the flower girl to the bride (it seemed) tripped walking down it. Not only that, there were no rose petals, extra flowers, candles, pedestals, or anything to make the space shine! Granted, the gardens at Oxon Hill Manor are gorgeous all on their own, but a little something can go a long way. Also, the aisle was hardly centered. The runner kept moving each time someone walked down it. Ahhh!!

Watching this video brought up a lot of good points for my man and me to discuss. Do we want an aisle runner? Definitely not! What we do want are loads and loads of rose petals. We want…well, it’s easier to show you than tell you. I found this picture on the Internet during our conversation, and we agreed—it’s perfect!

We love the mass of rose petals and the stakes in the ground that clearly define the aisle. However, you will not see an archway at my wedding!! No offense to brides who will be having one, I just have a serious aversions to both runners and archways! I don’t know what it is because everyone (from my best friend to my mom) seems to think they are just perfect for weddings. But I’m not going for it! Sorry, guys!

I want a gigantic cross at the end of the aisle. Yes, a cross! I know it’s not easy to envision (and it’s sure as heck not easy to find a picture of one online), but I want us to stand in front of a cross to represent our faith in Christianity. Ever seen the movie Fireproof? There’s a big cross in the wedding in that movie…

I swear…

See…

Apparently, they had an arch, too, but check out the cross in the back, which is where they stand when they say their vows. Just like what I want! Sweet, huh? There’s another picture of this type of thing here in one of my previous posts.

Anyway, besides the whole aisle thing, I should mention that Fireproof is a really good movie. Any engaged couples out there taking the Love Dare? More on that later…

Brides, do you love or hate arches? Are there other popular wedding pieces you despise?

I love the idea of the cross. Not so much a fan of Fireproof, it was okay. I laughed at the whole salt shaker glue thing ;) It was still a good movie to watch with my fiance though. Can’t wait to see what you end up with for your decorations!

Love the rose petals; they’re super pretty!! But I’ve always wondered if you put them down before people are being seated? Or do you wait until everyone’s sitting down and then lay the flowers petals? Or does the flower girl do it?
Sorry, that’s a lot of questions!!

Love the rose petals! We fell in love with them too and ditched the aisle runner.

I loooove all the rose petals too, and am considering doing the same thing. I don’t think I want an arch though, I’m not sure. So much to decide!

I want to do rose petals for my outdoor wedding but I am afraid that they will all just blow away.

arches are okay… love the petals
I totally thought of the Fireproof movie when you mentioned the cross… I’m sure that will work out great!

I don’t know much about Fireproof…but Jenna Bush has a big stone cross at her “altar” when she got married.

I was going to mention Jenna Bush too, because that was the first thing I thought of when I read you wanted a cross! It looked amazing, i love how its stone and sitting on a giant stone … table? not sure what to call it. photo #9 in this slideshow shows it really well http://abcnews.go.com/US/Springtime/popup?id=4832462

Both ideas are lovely. Look into a wholesale florist website like FiftyFlowers.com for the bulk rose petals — that’s where I got mine, and they were perfect! Also, if you’re interested in stakes/shepherd’s hooks, I have ten on sale now in WeddingBee Classifieds. I used the stakes to hang love quotes along my aisle. :)

Aisle runners on grass just sound like a bad idea. Can you imagine tripping down the aisle? Horrible…

Love the petals. I’m not a big fan of arches either but I would still consider one for an outdoor wedding (if we were having one). But hands-down think the cross idea is better!!

@ashley5741: That’s so cool! Really? @Kemi82JP: Thank you! I mentioned the cross at Jenna’s wedding in a previous post. When I found out about it, I thought I hit the jackpot because it’s like EXACTLY what I have in mind :) Thank you for the slideshow tho!

Since you are doing all the rose petals I would suggest having a florist do a very, very large floral cross for you. It would look amazing and you could have it designed with roses in it to coordinate with the rose petals. I do warn you though a huge floral cross will be pricey though but beautiful. :)

I like posydesign’s idea of a floral cross. Flowers may be pricey, but it could always be made primary or entirely of greenery. That would be pretty!

Brooch, hope I am not raining at your parade, but rose petals on the garden are strictly not allowed at OHM, except if they are on a runner. Check your “rules and regulations” handbook. I know, sucks, huh? I wanted petals really badly, but didn’t want the runner, so we had to give it up.
