Our First Budget Readjustment

September 10th, 2010 @ 8:44 am by Mrs. Lioness

You know? You plan and you plan and you think you cover everything. But then something comes up and requires a budget makeover. You see, I was convinced that we didn’t need a videographer. I’m more into still photos, and we had hired an amazing photographer (more on that later). I changed my mind when I saw this:

Source: Disney Weddings

That’s my cousin and her husband, and that’s their wedding-video montage. I watched it, I cried a little, and I fell in love with the idea of having one of our very own. Short, but sweet. Intimate, but accessible. It was perfect. So really, it wasn’t that I wanted a wedding video, just a video montage. Unfortunately, you need to have a wedding video first in order to create a highlights reel from it.

I moved some things around (mostly our floral budget…that category keeps taking hit after hit—just not a priority to us, I suppose) to accommodate $2000 for videography. If that sounds steep to you, you’re in for a big surprise. That’s the low end of videography. Videography is wicked expensive.

I researched potential vendors (via The Knot and Wedding Wire) and narrowed it down to two. The biggest factor in narrowing it down was price. The second, if we’re being honest here, was the quality of their website. So many videographers’ sites didn’t actually have video! Some did, but either the video quality was mediocre, and/or the rest of the site wasn’t really up to par. Maybe I was being superficial, but the way I see it, these vendors are artists. The little bit of extra effort it took to construct their sites in a way that compliments their work made such a difference. Flash was a bonus.

I requested demos from the two vendors that made the cut. When they arrived, I was a little disappointed with the first one. When I watched the second one, I realized that I was tearing up at the love stories of complete strangers. This videographer managed to capture every wonderful, unique aspect of the couple that was documented. It wasn’t just about that day—it was about the couple’s lives together. Hive, allow me to introduce you to Three Ring Weddings.

Three Ring Weddings market themselves as producers of “love stories.” They even interview the couple a few months before the wedding to get to know them. This helps them come up with a storyline so that the wedding video takes on a true plot. I ate this up. Best of all, they actually list their prices directly on their site. I know! Unheard of in the wedding world! They offer a new “economy package” that helped us come in just under budget. We immediately put down a deposit, friended them on Facebook, and bragged about how they made the Little Black Book on Style Me Pretty.

All in all, I was thrilled with our budget readjustment. I can’t wait to see the results! Did a new wedding wish force some flexibility into your planning process?

I had to cut videography from our budget. I’m still sad about it, especially after samples like these. I’m happy you could rework your budget to fit it in!

I totally agree w/ you about how a vendor’s website can make or break them for you! Some are just really annoying and others are dullsville….glad you’re getting videography, I think it’s soo worth it!!

Miss Lioness, I feel like we’re twins! Beyond the Atlanta-New England connection, my videography decision went just like yours. Poo-pooed the idea because we got such an awesome photographer, then changed our mind, then totally picked a videographer based on website quality. It’s so true — any videographer who can’t be bothered to put together a good website clearly can’t be very technologically-savvy, which seems like a bit of a problem to me.
Can’t wait to see your video!

I wish we could work videography into our budget, but it just isn’t going to happen. :(

I had the opportunity to work with Three Ring in a wedding in north GA about three weeks ago. I was blown away by their professionalism and product. I’m into wedding photography as well, but after seeing their work I’m a BIG time video believer too!!!

I had the head-over-heels-in-love with videography moment way before we had our budget figured out, so I knew from the start that I wanted to arrange everything possible to make it happen. Like you, I fell for the beautiful video highlights and SDEs here on WB and on other blogs and knew I had to have a piece of that artistry, and no matter how much I searched, I couldn’t find anyone inexpensive who could do anything close to what I was looking for. There’s not really an equivalent of up-and-coming photographers who are talented but not renowned and can give you a good deal - all the stellar videographers already have a name made for themselves, and charge accordingly. As you said, $2000 is actually a really good price for videography, so props to you for finding someone amazing for that price! I can’t wait to see your video.

Except for the tiny bit of audio of the ceremony, I saw nothing that couldn’t be captured by the photographer you’re *already paying.* If you want your wedding day with a soundtrack, then make a slideshow and put a good song with it, that won’t cost thousands of dollars.

BTW, the lighting most videographers use messes with how the photographer can do her/his job since they have to adjust for that huge light.

We had the same thing happen, didn’t want a videographer until I stumbled on an AMAZING video!! We quickly upped our budget (good videographers are so expensive!) and signed a contract. I’m sooo excited for this part of our wedding. What better way to capture the emotion and feeling of your day?!?!

@jordynrose: I know what you mean…we’ve definitely had to let some things go that we really wanted to include and just move on. It’s all about priorities!

I’m glad to hear that some of y’all felt the same way about vendor websites…it sounds so picky but I feel like it’s SO TRUE!

For all those brides who can’t (or don’t) want a pro videographer, check out these options for capturing your wedding: http://weddings.storymixmedia.com/wedding-video-personal-videos-photos.html

You can use their Flip cameras or supply your own video footage and get a professionally edited custom wedding video.

I relied on my sister to tape my wedding and she only got 10 minutes and the tape was then ruined in a flood. I really wish I had video of my grandma, it was the last event she was able to walk at before passing.

Oops. I shouldn’t have watched this. Now I want one! I was so not planning on having videography, but now I have to check it out.

Wow. Three Ring Weddings is amazing! I’m just sad they’re in Atlanta :(

I can’t wait to see your love story from them!
