Dance Like No One’s Watching

September 10th, 2010 @ 12:26 pm by Mrs. Thimble

Cuz…that’s about our dance skill set! I’ll let you know how our friendor dance lessons go a little later, but for now, lets talk music.

Dance Like No One's Watching : wedding music philadelphia Monogra monogra

(from Weddingchicks. This has nothing to do with dance songs except how super awesome our first dance will be!)

Our original no-brainer choice for our first dance song was Luckiest by Ben Folds. It was sort of “our song” for a few years, when we would pine for each other over the distance of a 4-hour drive between different colleges. It’s a gorgeous song, a tear-jerker, and it really speaks to how meant-for-each other we feel.

This was Mr. and Mrs. Hamster’s first dance song, and it was beeautiful!!

However, after eight years of loving this song…it almost didn’t feel right anymore. Like we were trying to fit into an old pair of shoes we’d grown out of. You know? And there’s the part about the couple dying, and it’s poetically lovely, but I’ve been worried about that line…

More recently, I’ve found myself listening to Bright Eye’s First Day of My Life on loop on the subway. I love that it is a little upbeat, it speaks to how long we’ve waited to get hitched, and “remember the time you drove all night, just to meet me in the morning” really happened…okay well, Mr. Thimble borrowed a friend’s car and drove to Allentown from Penn State on a whim on a Wednesday night and went back in the wee hours. I just, LOVE this song. Everything about it:

This is currently on the books with our band as the song we are using for our first dance.

But…of course…I’m reconsidering again. Shouldn’t we choose something more timeless and classic? But I don’t want to choose a song that doesn’t necessarily mean anything to us or that just looks like we picked it because it’s timeless and classic (and cookie cutter).

And then it dawned on me. We were listening to it at work this morning and I was thinking about how much I always love this song when it comes on, and I suddenly saw Mr. Thimble and I swaying happily to it as our families looked on and thought what a lovely choice it is for us…

It’s like it was right in front of my face the whole time! Mr. T and I love The Beatles, and I love that this Across the Universe cover is slower, soulful, and just a tiny but more current and trendy but not as trendy as the Bright Eyes song. The lyrics aren’t super serious—they’re simple, like we are. And heck, we met in high school, and it represents our youthful longing at the beginning of our relationship. No?

I love it. And Mr. Thimble pointed out that our guests will all actually know this song which is another bunch of points in its favor.

What are you using for your first dance song? How did you choose?

Love your choice! We are using the Across the Universe cover of I Get By With a Little Help From my Friends for our bridal party introductions into the reception. Awesome!

Love the Beatles cover!

I think we are leaning towards You are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne when the time comes. Although for a while I loved Keys to Your Love by the Stones.

Wedding songs can be so varied, though. A friend of my mine had Halo by Beyonce as their wedding song. And someone else had some Erasure song as theirs.

Fiona Apple does an awesome “Across the Universe” cover you might like too.

We danced to “First Day of My Life.” I’d put it on the first mix-CD I ever made for him four years before the wedding. I hope it didn’t come off as too hipster cool. I’m not an enormous Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst fan but I fell in love with that song the first time I heard it.

It seems like The Luckiest and that Jason Mraz song are the two big first dance songs these days. Kinda like Lonestar’s “Amazing” used to be.

My fiance loves to play me music (I’m not that much of a music buff) and when we were dating for a few months, he played “First Day of My Life”. I remember stopping in my tracks and just listening. I teared up and he told me that this should be our song. So yeah, that’s what we’ll be dancing too.

Ours is “First Day of My Life”…he put it on our “Long Distance Mixed CD”. It was the first song I heard as I drove away…crying the whole 2.5 hour drive.

I LOVE that cover of “I Want to Hold Your Hand!” Lovely!! We’re using “Chasing Cars,” by Snow Patrol. I have loved that song forever, and one day it came on the radio and FI said “This song always makes me think of you.” It became our song that moment, and it was a no-brainer that it would be our first dance song.

My sister and her husband were high school sweethearts. He went to Penn State and she went to Muhlenberg College in Allentown and they did the 4 hour commute for 4 years too!

I pushed for a long time for us to do our first dance to Ben Folds’ “The Luckiest,” but my husband didn’t love it enough. It is a beautiful song. A good friend of mine danced to “First Day Of My Life” at his wedding, it’s another great choice. Glad you found something that’s perfect for you guys!

Thimble, I feel like we’re music soulmates! I LOVE all of those songs. I’m a bit of a purist so I’m usually strongly opposed to Beatles covers, but I actually prefer that one to the original! (That one and maaaaybe MAYBE Fiona Apple’s Across the Universe) I’m sure your guests will love it :)

Picking a first dance song was one of my favorite parts of the planning. My husband has always substituted my name for words in songs and one of my favorites is when he does it in “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show (they say “rock me momma like a wagon wheel”, but my guy always says “rock me molly like a wagon wheel”) So we got a sweet upbeat song that he would like as much as I did (they are a bluegrass band and he LURVES bluegrass…and now so do I!)
