Mrs. Elephant's Picture
Mrs. Elephant, Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 27, Financial Operations Analyst Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, IT Student/Store Manager Engagement Date: March 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: The Tribute Golf Club About Me: I'm a Philly native creating roots deep in the heart of Texas. I might be a little obsessed capturing those Kodak moments of anything and everything (mainly on vacations). I've become more of a gamer thanks to Mr. Elephant, who I met online and can't wait to spend the rest of my life with. We are planning a wedding based on our favorite colors, blue and green, with a travel theme for 150 of our closest friends and family. Hopefully our long (2-year) engagement won't kill me!
About Mrs. Elephant

Yep, it’s dress shopping time again! This time Mama Elephant and I headed out to Bridal Couture of Addison. Their website mentioned it had a  large selection of plus-sized dresses. After signing in for my appointment I was very disappointed to see that their “large selection” was really only one rack. I guess in comparison to the size of the whole store, it could be seen as a large selection to some.

We pulled a handful of dresses and went back to try them on. This store didn’t carry my top pick (nor could they order it), so the majority of the dresses that I tried on were Casablanca and Maggie Sottero.

First up was the Maggie Sottero Laila - This satin beauty is from the Spring 2010 collection and my thoughts were that it was nice, but a little heavy. I wasn’t crazy about the beading around the butt, but was told that they can remove that.

Casablanca #1776 - This second dress had a lot more interesting detail around the bottom and train, which was great. I wonder if they could change the zip-up back to a corset back.

Love the detailing of the top and bottom.

Maggie Sottero - Vonda: This was a nice dress, and gave me a great waist. And yes, it was a little small, hence the “I can’t breath” look in this picture.

Maggie Sottero - Vienna: This is a very pretty dress! I love the shape of it and the lace and beading were both very pretty. The little bit of rouching to the side helped give me a waist. What I didn’t like about this dress? The price! It was a little over $1300, something we didn’t notice before putting it on. Oh well, I guess it’s a good thing I didn’t fall in love with this one and have to justify the cost to myself.

And there you have it, the end of our dress shopping experience. Next time you see a dress post from Miss Elephant, it will be The Dress!

Did you have much luck trying on dresses? If you are plus size, was dress shopping a fear for you like it originally was for me?

I wasn’t really afraid of it as a plus bride, but it started to tick me off after I branched out to shops other than David’s Bridal.

I’m glad I started by going to a place where they had every dress in just about every size (David’s Bridal can get knocked for many things, but they carry dresses in all sizes) so I could figure out some things about what styles worked for me.

The shop where I eventually got my dress had a really good selection of plus size dresses, better than any place except David’s Bridal.

@Miss Meerkat: LOL no more teaser posts!

@marieta: I think every DB experience is different, and sadly I did not have a good one. :( When I went, the person helping me said there were only 2 dresses that I could try on. Thankfully, like you, I was able to find good selections of dresses at other shops.

I think I tried on like 30+ dresses before finding “the one” which ended up the dress that originally caught my eye in a bridal magazine. My advise is to find somewhere to try on the dress you mentioned!

I love the Vienna dress! I have had a similiar experience as you though. Trying on dress after dress after dress! Hopefully you’ve found one and I will soon too!

LOVE the Laila on you!
I actually bought my dress at Bridal Couture in Addison….I am really surprised they let you take photos of all the gowns you tried on. They were really strict with me and my family about that when we were “shopping-around” still. If you have any questions about their store/service you can PM me. Can’t wait to see which one you pick!

@Miss Iowa: That’s weird, we had no problems, in fact everyone there were snapping away. I wonder if they changed their policy, we did go dress shopping earlier this year.

@bRooklynRocks:

If you are into Maggies then I recommend checking out Bridal Boutique in Greenpoint, BK. Decent selection of Maggies at good prices plus alterations are quite inexpensive.
