Why I Don’t Like Bridal Salons

Why I Don't Like Bridal Salons : wedding dress providence Dscn473

Does this look like a sweetheart top to you? For those of you less inclined on the sewing machine, I’ll answer for you: no, it does not look like a sweetheart top.

I’m sure you are wondering why I am so anti-bridal shop.

To be fair, Spiffy chose this particular bridal shop because they were the only salon willing to order her dress without her buying it first. So there’s one thing going for them. However, when we went to order our bridesmaid’s dresses, it was an entirely different story. The store was adamant that we not schedule our appointment too close to their lunch hour. Knowing what looks good on my body, I thought an hour before their lunch would suffice. When we arrived, no one helped us…for 40 minutes. There were no other customers in the store. If you’ve ever been to a bridal salon, all the dresses are shoved onto racks and you cannot just walk in and find the one you’ve been eyeing online without some assistance. One of her BMs and I were able to find dresses that we enjoyed in time for the assistant to come down and measure us. We had just filled out the receipts when I compared the dresses to the other 2 BMs dresses and realized they were another shade of brown. At that point it was 20 minutes before their lunch, and the assistant said, “you won’t see that in the pictures.” Like hell you won’t. So, we started the search again, with an encouraging eye roll from the assistant. Can I even use the word assistant anymore? She assisted us in nothing until this point. We found dresses and paid for them in time for the store to close for their lunch.

As a side note, never joke about an unplanned pregnancy when they are ordering your dress, because of course they are going to order a size or two up. There were some alterations that needed to be done to the sides of my dress, so in order to make dresses fit nicely, a talented seamstress may also take in the princess seams (the seams that extend from your nipple down).  Needless to say, the rouching on the dress was all sorts of ugly. Making alterations to a dress a few days before a wedding was not fun, FYI.

To top off the wonderful experience, the day before the wedding we picked up Spiffy’s dress. They told her to arrive anytime after 2PM. It was 4PM, and the girls gave Spiffy a huge attitude and ran into the back. AN HOUR LATER the dress was steamed and ready for us to take home. Do you want to sit on a pin-riddled floor for an hour, getting dirty looks, 24 hours before you wedding? Yeah, I didn’t think so. To boot, the veil was left UNsteamed.

So you see, the most expensive outfit you are every going to wear is way too important to receive the service that we did. The salons often look down on brides who spend less than a few grand on a dress. It is wonderful if a bride can afford dresses of that price, however, for the majority of us, $1000 on a piece of clothing is astronomical, one of a kind, precious, what have you, and the experience should be pleasant. You should have to extract that bitch’s nose from your ass with the jaws of life. You should NOT have to sit on the floor for an hour the day before your wedding.

My advice to you all is, you better shop around.

Have you had any less-than-stellar bridal shop experiences?

OMG! The first time I got treated like that I would have turned right around and walked out the door. I am so glad that the one we to was very helpful.

You should write a review up for that salon so that others know what they are getting into there.

Ugh, that sounds awful. I didn’t have an experience like that myself, but my best friend did. She’s in a wedding next weekend and their dresses arrived last weekend, after they all had to harass the shop to get them. I would hit up some review sites, to give people a heads up.

My bridal salon was HORRIBLE!!! My consultant was nice, but the managers were SO MEAN, they never answered the phone I couldn’t even get corporate customer service to get them to respond! My dress came in 1.5 months after it was supposed to and was too short and 2 sizes too small!! This is after I spent $500 for alterations and lost 10 lbs since being measured. No one apologized and they were mad when I wanted to talk about my options since it was 3 WEEKS before my wedding!

So yeah needless to say I totally agree with you about shopping around. Find the dress of your dreams anywhere but order it from the store you get warm and fuzzies from. I totally should have listened to Randy at Kfeld and emailed him the style # so he could try to order it. Big regret!

I’ve had more than ONE bridal shop experience like this, at different bridal shops. As BM’s for a friend, another girl and I were all but ignored by the attendants while they tried to talk the bride into buying the more expensive dress. As soon as the sales girl (and I stress “sales”) found out I was also a bride-to-be, she was suddenly very sweet and accommodating to me. The power of the almighty dollar.

On another occasion (and in a different shop), my groom, my mother, and two sisters (BM’s) and I were ignored for no less than 45 minutes by the woman with whom we had scheduled an appointment to try on two of the SEVEN dresses we were planning to purchase. Apparently, and unscheduled bridal gown purchase was far more important to her commission. (In the store’s defense, when we finally were helped, it was by the store manager, who had been in the storeroom the whole time and unaware that her associates had kept us waiting so long.)

On yet ANOTHER occasion, I was told that I could not make an appointment for a fitting on a Saturday, because that was when the shop was busiest so she needed us to come in on a Tuesday. She as much as told me that since I was guaranteed business, she wouldn’t help me on a day when there could be walk-in business to take advantage of. We went to another shop (the third), to purchase our seven bridesmaid dresses. Oh, and this same shop proprietor told me that she was giving me a fabulous deal on the dress I was ordering (seven of, remember). Come to find out, she was actually OVER-charging us, and where we actually purchased the dresses from gave them to us for more than $50 less than the original was claiming was a deal.

The shop where I finally ended up purchasing my seven dresses from was AMAZING. A tiny little “shop” mainly run for the purpose of renting and altering prom dresses, and run out of the basement of the proprietor’s home. A bit cramped, but the most amazing experience I’ve ever had with purchasing bridesmaid dresses, and I’d go back to her in an instant. ;)

Well… thanks for letting me rant! Clearly, I’m on your team when it comes to disliking bridal shops! (Though I do know of one of two stellar shops in my area.)

That sounds horrible! Thankfully I didn’t have any major issues with shops that I went to.

I had a bridal store experience like this, and so I just declined to buy my dress there. There was no way I was going to deal with this through all my fittings.

I guess I’m just lucky! I’ve been in several weddings and for my own dress I went to about 10 different stores. I can say that every single bridal salon I went into I had a WONDERFUL experience! And my dress was not a couple grand. Obviously some are better than others, but I have only had good experiences.

I went with a brideI was working with to pick out her bridesmaid dresses. We arrived to the appointment on time (if not a little bit early) to find that our assistant was not there yet. The shop called her to find where she was at, but she didn’t show up for another 40 minutes. By that point, I had pulled dresses for the BM’s to try on, and we had picked the one they were going to wear. I left feeling like I should have earned her commission.

im sorry you had a bad experience, but I honestly do see the dress in the first picture as having a sweetheart neckline.

Wow! I’ve been to tons of bridal salons (between the 4 weddings I’ve been in, shopping for my sister’s wedding, and shoping for mine), and only had a bad experience twice. Otherwise, I’ve always had a pleasant experience. Sorry you had to deal with that!

I went into one cute shop in my neighborhood and the shop idiots actually made me feel BAD for bothering them! Needless to say, we walked out and took our business elsewhere. I can’t even fathom how a shop, especially a small, independent one, can afford to lose any customers.

You are hysterical. I went into one bridal shop where the consultant/owner couldn’t be bothered to help me zip up any of the dresses. Needless to say I didn’t buy from them.

That’s awful that they would do that to a customer!!! Luckily for me my bridal salon was awesome. The lady who helped me made it a wonderful experience (which is great since my mom was determined to ruin the day for me). However I’m dreading going to David’s Bridal for my girls dresses, I have just read so many horrible stories, ugh.

Second salon I went to was one of the most well known in the area. I was not impressed. The lady that worked with me laced me in, and that was it. I went through the racks, and hung them up for another lady to move into the room. My BM that came with had to pick the train up to get it over all obstacles in the way. The lady didn’t show any interest in my engagement, what I was interested in or anything. She didn’t show any sign of life until I said that one of the dresses might be it. It wasn’t. I ended up going back to the first shop to buy my dress.

I hate bridal salons. This is why I’m trying to order my dress from Nordstroms.com
