About Mrs. Earrings

Colour Palette? Oh Yeah…

September 13th, 2010 @ 7:00 pm by Mrs. Earrings

One of the most common questions I get asked about the wedding is what our colours are. Well…the answer to that has changed a bit over the last few months.

It all started off innocently enough with purple. Not a particular purple; I love the colour so I am happy with pretty much any shade of it. The lavender flower was (and still is) a big influence, though.

Then we added in some “manly” green shades to balance out all that purple froof.

According to some, we should have stopped there. But the classic “two-tone wedding palette” just doesn’t do it for us. Slowly but surely, other colours and shades have crept in.

Give me some pink with that purple, please:

And you know we like lace. That lace brings shades of cream, ivory, and white with it. We haven’t been too picky.

Pewter grey, silver grey, some hints of brown?

Well…that certainly isn’t a two-toned palette that we have on our hands. Should I be worried? I was a little concerned at first, but only because everywhere I turned I was told “keep it to just a few colours or shades.” But now, after I have seen how things look as they gradually come together, I am pleasantly surprised that this medley of colours and patterns is looking pretty good, whatever the wedding planning books might say.

I even have a silly little term for our “new” wedding palette: Our wedding will be “teacup toned.” :)

It makes sense, right? Mismatched teacups never seem to fail to look good together, and seeing as we will be having them at our wedding as well, it stands to reason that their influence has spread to more areas of the wedding than one. I’m loving the look.

How about you? Have you given up on keeping your wedding colours to two or three tones and are you instead going with a more nontraditional mixed-bag look?

Our wedding is teacup toned too! We have the exact same “colors” except we started with ivory & purple and added gold instead of pewter!

Love it! Our combo (deep red + light/tiffany/aqua blue) paired with a (red) autumn leaf motif turned out to be pretty unique, so we eventually decided to keep it to those two colors. Definitely thought about adding others, though!

I love it! We started in the same place, with lavender. have moved to “shades” of purple. Now, the cakes I love contain red, turquoise, grey, & black because they’re the colors in Navajo rugs & jewelery. oh, where will it end? :o)

We also have about 6 or 7 “colours”, but I don’t have a fun name for them!

I love “teacup toned” - it reminds me of Pretzel’s Kodachrome wedding!

I think the reason why people suggest sticking to just a few colors is because in order for your colors to have a visual impact, there has to be enough of them present at your wedding for people to notice them, and that’s easier to do with fewer colors. I think that a wider palette can be stunning, but the way to pull it off is to make sure all the colors you use are present in a lot of places in very visible ways. Otherwise you risk losing the effect of a color palette at all. I bet your colors are going to look amazing!

i am so charmed by this story! and you are such a good bride for trying to keep some “not so girly” colors for your fiance :)

our color palette is just as eclectic as yours, which i wouldn’t have any other way. we call ours “sunset shades,” inspired by a vintage postcard of a tropical hawaiian sunset {and the locale for our big day}. pale aqua, blush peachy pink, rich coral pink, washed lavender, with a splash of silver and gold. the more the merrier!

I absolutely love your color palette and am incredibly jealous of your mis-matched tea set! It’s gorgeous! If it wasn’t so late in the game, I’d go back and copy you. =) But instead I’ll just wait patiently to see how beautiful everything turns out for you.

Mmmmm, I love this color palette. And that you chose vintage inspiration photos for all of them. This looks fantastic!

Glad to see another bride ditch the traditional 2 tone palette! We picked four plus any cream or white we add in. =)
