Mrs. Argyle, St. Louis Age and Occupation: 24, Project Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Pilot Engagement Date: February 15, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Jewel Box in Forest Park and Windows on Washington About Me: I'm a true Midwestern girl (born and raised), lover of red wine, reality TV and the entire J.Crew catalog. I love to dance regardless of who is watching, and enjoy a good laugh with my girls. I have a soft spot in my heart for planet Earth, my two dogs and my fiance. Fall is my favorite season (which is why we are marrying in September), but I love a warm summer day and the Colorado mountains in the winter. We are planning a modern soiree downtown, with lots of bold colors, and fun, eco-friendly elements.

Dressing Up Mom

September 13th, 2010 @ 5:29 pm by Mrs. Argyle

It’s amazing how sidetracked you can get when you’re nearing the final days before your wedding. So what have I been up to? Craziness, I tell you (minus all the stress).

And, that includes getting a dress at the last-minute for Mom Argyle.

We looked. We looked and looked and looked from the day I got engaged. We looked online, and Mom ordered several dresses, but returned them. Then, we shopped some more.

Okay, you get the point. But, it wasn’t easy. My mom is literally my size, other than the fact that she’s two inches taller. She’s a younger mom, and prefers modern dresses, so a traditional Mother of the Bride gown was out. We found a few contenders, but after really looking at them, we decided they just weren’t right.

Until, we went to Nordy’s one Saturday in the hopes of finding SOMETHING.

A glimmer of hope was all we needed. And, a glimmer of hope we found. Mom walked away with this beauty (of which I would like to borrow in the future):

Yes, it looks quite short on this model, but she’s over 6 feet, and Mom is 5’4″. Anyway, Mom looks great in this dress, and I love how chic it is. She’ll look great on wedding day, and I know she’s happy to have this one crossed off the list!

How hard was it to find a dress for your mom? Did she want something different than a traditional Mother of the Bride dress?

My mom is in the same boat yours was in. While she’s the normal age bracket for having a daughter my age, for a MoB she’s young and hates what she calls the “Marmy dresses”. So for now she’s been looking at bridesmaid dresses and planning to add a jacket or something.

Shortly after I got engaged, I asked my mother what she wanted to wear to our wedding. Her answer surprised me - she wants to wear a skirt suit! She wears dresses and sweaters to work all of the time, so I imagine the suit will be a nice change, and we’ve been able to find some really nice, special-occasion ones as well :)

That dress is cute! I have no idea what my mom is going to wear, she normally wears men’s clothes and has zero ability to dress herself in a dress or skirt (not trying to be harsh, its just true lol. Mom’s a total tomboy and shes ok with that).
I hope to go shopping around xmas or spring break and I want to take her to try stuff on. I don’t know what she wants to wear, though it would be cool if she would wear a chinese dress in keeping with our theme. Plus they are cheap on ebay. :-) This is one chore I do NOT look forward to lol.

I left it entirely up to her, so thankfully I was out of the stress of that decision! Same with MIL, who actually bought a handful of dresses and didn’t pick one for certain until after she’d arrived in town for the wedding. It’s a good thing I didn’t care much, or that would have been anxiety-inducing!

My mom had a hard time, because she didn’t want a frumpy mother of the bride dress but she also wanted a long dress — and MOB dresses all seem to be beige with jackets and fabric like sofas! She ended up trying on bridesmaids dresses and choosing this one by Wtoo in indigo blue: http://watters.com/product.php?coll=wtoo&showid=2427

I love it and so does she!

stunning! this gives me hope that my mom and i will be able to find something equally stylish for our little beach wedding :)
my lovely and amazing mother has been my style inspiration since i was a little girl and the traditional, matronly MOB styles are a fry cry from her personality. wish me luck!

My mom found her outfit within my being engaged for a week. It’s an Anne Klein silver beaded dress that was on sale for 75% off after Christmas (regularly $600 - go bargain finding Mom!). She refused to even look at traditional MOB dresses.

My FMIL, however… that could be interesting.

Mother-of-the-Bride/Groom fashions are tricky, in general. It’s important to make your mother happy though it’s equally important to assist your mother in selecting a style, size and color that will be most flattering to her. Too often, either the bride or mother has a vision for “the” dress that is unrealistic. I say start from scratch and begin with a color scheme and then dress style (long, short, mid-calf) and then move to fabrics. This can take a bit of time, but the results are always satisfying.
