The Sister I Always Knew I Wanted

September 14th, 2010 @ 1:57 pm by Mrs. Zebra

Being the youngest sibling to two very protective brothers, I always wanted a sister who could share the spotlight. I would routinely check my birth certificate hoping that I was secretly a twin. My mother still displays the Christmas list I wrote asking for a baby sister complete with “all her things.” I never did think that I would inherit a sister and a best friend via either my brothers, but that is sure as heck what I got. We became really close when she got pregnant with my twin nephews.

She even gave me the privilege of being Maid of Honor at their wedding.

How is this wedding related you ask? Well, my sister, you see, is very smart.

One night while explaining the guest list conundrum, I told her that I don’t like to disappoint. I guess I more or less try to avoid any situation where someone will be talking about me in an unpleasant way. Talking shit, if you will.

“I know you do,” she said to me, “but it doesn’t matter when or how you piss people off, they are definitely going to be talking shit about your wedding. The invitations are too gaudy, I can’t believe she paid to have the room lit up, the centerpieces look stupid!”

The bright F-it light went on over my head. She’s absolutely correct. People are already becoming offended by our choices. Why should I expect that the guest list be any different? I certainly don’t want to lose sleep over a decision that is going to aggravate people, either way. Then she said the best phrase she could utter, music to my ears really, because I’ve been saying it all along but haven’t been listening to myself. “People forget that they are there to support you, on the best day of your life.”

So, Thank you Santa, for fulfilling my Christmas wish a few years later than expected!

What’s the best nugget of wisdom that someone’s given you about your wedding?

So true, people will get offended no matter what you say. Do what you love and say “screw you” to the rest

So true! This isnt wedding advice per say but my dad has always said to me “This too shall pass” so it can kind of apply to that. People will say stupid stuff but then they will be there to support you and give you love and encouragement.

Words to live by in my opinion. It will apply to every aspect of your wedding. I really despise how people seem to realize your wedding should be a reflection of you and the person you are marrying, not their personal aesthetic.

Sounds like you got the best new sister you could have asked for! I always wanted a younger sister when I was little so I could torment her the way my sister did to me. My new SIL is a bit old for all that, but that just means I have some catching up to do.

Yes! Hell yes! I am going to borrow the term “F-It” button, if you don’t mind.

i totally agree on the f-it attitude. anytime i tell someone i made my bouquest from fake flower i get the thats stupid look but you know what? my flowers look amazing and have looked amazing for several months and in 11 years when we have a 10 year vow renewal i can carry the same damn flowers. my future step daughter keeps asking stuff about the wedding then telling me its stupid (my cake topper dosent have eyes, the flower girls are throwing feathers instead of petals) whatever, its my wedding, shes 8 what does she know about getting “marriage” as she calls it. everytime i tell someone an idea they give me the wtf are you smoking look and im done. ill plan the wedding and when they show up if they dont like it f-it!

@clarebee: My mom says that too! I love that saying.

@LittlestBirds: I may have wanted to torture my fictitious little sister as well. :)

@Violet Violet: Steal away, we’ll get t-shirts and start a campaign and spread f-it like wild fire!

@cr6zy: Saucy, isn’t she? Haha I feel you on the fake flowers. I made all my bouquets/bouts as well.

Great advice and those nephews are sooo cute!! I feel like my MOH/best friend is my long lost sister too…and I actually have two sisters!! LOL Go figure! She gave me great advice too…we were getting confused during the wedding who was getting announced and if the bridal party would stand during the first dance…and the bridal attendant lady said the DJ said they would stand…and I said um…well I really wanted them to sit…so I wasnt sure what to do…and my MOH said to me, “D. this is your day, your wedding, do it your way and the way you want!”

In other words…listen to your gut and dont let anyone tell you other wise!

That is awesome advice. To be honest though, in our 50 person guest list I don’t think there is anyone who would talk shit- we only invited the ones who’ve got nothing but love for us!
