Mrs. Brooch's Picture
Mrs. Brooch, Arlington, VA Age and Occupation: 25, Writer/Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Front Desk Manager Engagement Date: October 3, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Oxon Hill Manor About Me: I’m an indecisive girlie-girl with a motor mouth, can-do attitude, and knack for making others laugh. I dream of becoming a best selling novelist like Elizabeth Gilbert or Julie Powell (a girl can dream, right?), and love long road trips, a beautiful countryside, music, blogs, books, and all things vintage/thrift/antique/or homemade. I’m a Virgo, i.e. overly sensitive, emotional, and critical, and there’s no such thing as short and sweet in my world. I want to say and do it all. Mr. Brooch grounds me. I point where to go and he figures out the way. He’s a pragmatic fancy-pants who enjoys video games and movies. We both adore our mutt, Rocky, and spending time with our amazingly supportive family and friends. We’re planning a garden wedding with a formal reception with lots of whimsy and unique, Southern-inspired details.

Help Design Our Dance Floor

September 14th, 2010 @ 11:58 am by Mrs. Brooch

I need your help. We want something fun like this at our wedding:

I love these pictures and I love these lanterns. I like how the lanterns give the room a jolt of color and how they really make this seating area stand out. I’d love to have lanterns or something similar hanging from the ceiling in our dance room. Something like this would be perfect:

The problem is that we’re getting married during the day and I don’t think it will be dark outside for much of our wedding. Plus, I’m not sure we can hang anything from the walls or ceiling. It’d be really cool if we could hang drapes like these:

Do any of you have a design suggestion for this area of our venue?

I want something that sets our dance floor apart. Something that is going to define that space. Something that is going to bring color and life to the drab room. I like this a lot, too—love this, I should say. Probably because of all the green:

The picture below is the room where our dance floor will be. I took it back in when we found our venue. The DJ (or iPod station) will be set against the back wall of this room. From what we’ve seen of other weddings at this venue, the dance floor will be directly in front of the DJ area and adjacent to the fireplace.

See that boring white ceiling? What is something creative I can hang from there?

How would you decorate this space?

Use 3M Commander hooks! You can hang anything from the ceiling or walls with absolutely no risk of damage to any surface.

@julies1949: VERY VERY helpful info! Thanks! I’m almost positive our venue has major restrictions on hanging or putting anything on the walls! That’s why I need a creative idea for decorations!

I second julies idea. I LOVE the paper lantern idea and with the 3M hooks you do it without leaving any damage!

My reception hall won’t let us hang anything on the walls or ceiling either, but we’re using lighting to accentuate the dance floor. There will be a patterned gobo (provided by our dj) to set it apart from the rest of the room

I agree about the lighting. Uplights with a bold color will really change the mood of the room and incorporate your color palette.

Command hooks are a girls best friend! :) …I’m planning to use them all over our venue, too! I also am in love with the paper lanterns… they’re pretty cheap too if you’re not doing lights in them!

What about those big circle balloons we see so much of in e-pics? You could but a ton of them and cover the ceiling in them without damaging the ceiling and you don’t have to use ribbon so they would look similar to the lanterns at a fraction of the cost. I found this picture that is pretty but you don’t even need the string….

The no-damage hooks could help for sure. Some specialty lighting could also do WONDERS for that space. Uplighting, a specialty monogram projected on a wall, etc…

Random ideas:

a bubble machine near the dance floor
(might get slippery though)

up-lighting

rent a cool dance floor (Like this: http://amazingdancefloors.com/led-lit-dance-floor-rental-in-hot-pink/)

Cool arches that don’t need to attach to the ceiling (balloons are tacky, but maybe flowers?)

Monogrammed spotlight (kind of pricey though, I assume)

Good luck!

@Trishthedish36: I love that hot pink dancefloor! That’s an awesome idea!

I would see if you could rent trees from a local nursery or make your own out of large branches in big urns (some antique/restoration places rent them out). Since its a garden wedding, bring it inside - then you could hang depending on the size some laterns or something from the trees. Good Luck.

Helium balloons? You could find a way to corral them to the dance floor area and get a similar look.

second thought- What about using helium ballons? You can get perfectly round helium balloons now, and they won’t even touch the walls(maybe the ceiling!).

As far as the use of 3M hooks, I would meet with the venue people and demonstrate how they are used. Maybe they would change their policy once they see how great they are.

Could you set up four poles on each corner of the dance floor and string your lanterns from those?

If you definitely can’t do lanterns, how about ribbons? It would be another cool way to add color and interest–here’s a wedding that did it http://www.snippetandink.com/2010/08/modern-brooklyn-weddin.html

Or the large helium balloons that people have been using for e-pics could work too! Maybe string them together with fishing line to keep them from getting out of control

I don’t think balloons are tacky at all if done right. You don’t even have to include the string. And those big round ones are so pretty!

If you can put arches at the corners, and string drapery swags or ribbons between them, I think that will look really nice. Sheer drapes will give an ethereal look and define the space without being overwhelming. Lighting at the arches could really take it to the next level, too!

Or columns, instead of arches!

I think ktisthatbees has it right with adding poles to the corners of the room. Or even if you could do standing poles on either side of your cake table and head table and add lanterns that way it would give it the same feel as your inspiration pics.

I’d imagine if your venue limits hanging things from the ceiling & walls they’re not going to allow removable hooks either.
