Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

Mamasita of the Bride

September 14th, 2010 @ 2:40 pm by Mrs. Lioness

I’ve mentioned before that my mom is not your typical Mother of the Bride. After surviving breast cancer and a divorce, it’s safe to say that she has a fresh new outlook on life. Add that to her Latina background, along with living in one of the most dynamic areas in the nation…let’s just say she wasn’t planning on wearing this to our wedding:

We chatted about it and decided on a few things before she started shopping.

I wanted her dress to be pool blue. My bridesmaids would be wearing green, so I wanted my mom to be in our other wedding color. She said she didn’t want to look “old.” I said I didn’t want her to look too conservative, but I didn’t want her to dress too young. She said she wanted something that would “twirl well while dancing.”

Armed with a fair set of rules, we took a little trip to Formally Yours, the salon where I found my wedding dress. At the sight of dark, dreary colors and oversized boleros, she immediately vetoed the entire Mother of the Bride section. We decided to take a little detour and check out the bridesmaids’ section instead. Lo and behold, we found a pool blue chiffon dress that was absolutely stunning:

Personal photo: looking age appropriate but sassy…Stacy and Clinton would be proud!

How perfect is that?! She loved it. I loved it. We had a winner.

How did your mom find her dress? Is anyone else using a bridesmaid dress instead of a Mother of the Bride dress?

My mom wore the same color! And it was a sassy one shouldered dress. And she looked and felt awesome. Yay for hot mothers of the bride!

My mom wore something very similar to my sister’s wedding (same styel, but bright fuschia) - she was smokin hot! For ours she’s opted for a long, champagne colored dress. Not as sassy, but still gorgeous!

my mom actually ended up buying a wedding dress but then cutting off the train and taking out the poof. it was a vera wang so it was ethereal and didn’t LOOK like a wedding dress necessarily - plus it was a bronze kind of color. she looked great and was super happy about it.

she loved this particularly dress so much that when i was shopping for a dress i ended up trying it on 3 times at different places (i hated it) until finally at the VW studio, the consultant suggested she try it as she’s had other MOBs buy it. so she did and that was that.

She looks lovely!!!! My mom hasn’t looked yet but I know a lot of the MOB stuff is really not “her”. So glad your mom found something beautiful that feels just right for her!!

My mom absolutely can not wear a dress from any “mother of the bride” section. EGH! Those things are awful! I feel like she’ll wear something like your mother got and I think that’s FABULOUS! No one should be made to feel forced into certain attire (frumpy or not) for any reason!

Your mum looks great! Yay for another MOB who is happy to break out of the box :) My mum is wearing a sweet chiffon 50s-ish dress. She hated all those suits and boleros that the store assistants tried to get her to try on.

I was at Formally Yours trying on wedding dresses this weekend. We’ll have to go back and further explore the bridesmaid section.

We have similar mamas! My mom is a breast cancer survivor as well and was not about to wear a regular old mother of the bride dress. She is wearing a really pretty dress that hits above her knee. Your mom looks fabulous!

Sounds like our moms are the same… and that somewhere in the breast cancer battles a bunch of our moms seem to have found new determinations!!! My mom HATED all the mother of the bride dresses… she had originally picked a gorgeous bridesmaid dress as well, but unfortunately after her mastectomy (and after she had bought the dress), it showed too much of her scarring for her to be comfortable! With little time to spare, we recently found her a GORGEOUS set from a consignment shop… definitely not a typical MOB dress!!

She looks awesome!

I can’t imagine my mother in a standard MOB outfit. I wouldn’t call her sassy, and your mom’s dress wouldn’t suit her, either, but she’s not formal by any stretch of the imagination. I’m still trying to figure out what we’ll do with her. :>

I love that dress. Mr. M. mom has been looking at bridesmaids dresses too cause she says the mother dresses are all frumpy. This gives us hope that she will find something soon (I HOPE!).

Awesome, love the color!! My mom also went the bm dress route, choosing separates from David’s. (One shoulder shirt and long skirt.) :)

@Miss Earrings: That sounds gorgeous!

I’m so glad there are other moms out there who chose to think outside the box when it came to dressing up!

My daughter gets married this coming April. I had a mastectomy one month ago. I’m spending hours browsing online for the perfect - not matronly - gown before going to try on. The wedding will be in the evening and I want to wear floor length. have found gorgeous gowns, but…..my chest wall looks concave, not drastically, but noticeably. The best prothesis will not take that away. All gowns seem to accentuate the chest or cleavage….of which I now do not have. Any suggestions?

I had reconstructive surgery and that helped. Also will be 3 years ago by time of wedding!
I have seen lovely dresses that may seem “skimpy” on top but have lacey “over tops” or blouses (don’t know the word) of different sleeve length. Sassy/sexy and pretty while providing camoflauge. Prettier to my mind than a jacket or bolero. If the dress you like doesn’t have one, you may be able to order a match.
