Light It Up!

Uplighting definitely creates amazing ambiance. When I mentioned adding some colored lights to the ballroom at our venue, Mama Seashell made some inquiries and found a fabulous deal: our caterer was willing to rent us 6 can lights for $15 each. SCORE! This would create the perfect amount of “glow” in our ballroom at an unbelievable price.

Fast forward a few months. We learned that the can lights were overloading the circuits at our venue and were blowing fuses. The venue coordinator told me about a recent wedding where the band lost power 3 times during the evening. No good. She recommended I contact companies that use battery powered LED uplights. I did my research, shopped around, and the best quote I could find was $1,000. Also, no good.

I put my engi-nerd (Mr. Seashell) to work. (There was no way we were going from paying $90 to $1,000 for lighting.) After racking his brain, he finally came across these:

{LED Wall Wash}

At $61 each, they made for a decent compromise. We went ahead and purchased 6 and had them shipped to Providence. We also figured we could cover our expenses and resell these post-wedding.

As they are, they create that lovely intense “blue LED glow”. We picked up some gels and played around.

On the lower step is a golden amber gel, on the higher is a soft pink. Papa Seashell and I decided the golden amber had the right amount of intensity. Then he helped me cut gels.

Once our gels were cut and secured we lit up the living room (currently covered in wedding “stuff”)!

Who knew you could DIY uplighting?

WOW I’m really impressed that 6 of those created that much light. Very good DIY purchase!

Pretty! Uplighting scares me, but maybe I will look into it now that you have made it look so easy!

Very cool! I would love something like this for my wedding. Please let me know if you decide to re sell your lights. Unfortunately, my budget won’t allow me to purchase these right now. But a girl can dream, right? lol

Oh, this makes so much sense. I love it. I will let my guy look into it too. The quotes I’ve been getting are ridiculous. However, are you also having a band? Maybe it was the band that was tripping the current?

@bRooklynRocks: Exactly, the band plus the lights were overloading the circuits. Supposedly the band on their own didn’t cause a problem.

what a difference amber glow makes! i feel like it transforms any event to a more fabulous affair and make the photographs stunning. bravo, miss seashell!

as for our little beach day, we purchased an army of white, dove grey and metallic silver paper lanterns and rented cafe string lights…so we can have a twinkling night under the stars :)

Those lights look great! I’d love to have something like that for both my Halloween party and for my wedding. Please let me know if you do sell them because I am definitely an interested buyer!

Ooo nice. Much better than my little spotlights. http://www.partybrights.com/product/WW-19513/Acolyte-E-Wall-Wash-60-White-LED-Battery-Operated.html has them on sale for $48 for the month of September.

Oh also, to make the pink more intense, layer your gels until they are as rich as you want them to be.

@emma5w: @Natalie542: So sorry I forgot to mention this! We got them at Guitar Center. They’re at a lot of music stores or places that sell band or DJ type equipment.

This post made my day!! I have decided that I HAVE to have uplighting, but the cost was insane.

How did you decide on how many to order?

@carly5482: Our ballroom is the first photo. It’s a large rectangular room, so I figured 6 uplights — one in each corner and two centered on the longest walls. It was mostly a random guess. Fingers crossed that it turns out looking good!

WOW! We don’t have the budget so I’d given up hope of having uplighting, even though our venue coordinator raved about how much of a difference it made at a previous wedding. This may be a good solution…
