Mrs. Barrettes's Picture
Mrs. Barrettes, Tumon, Guam/Napa, CA Age and Occupation: 29, Dancer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 31, Licensed Building Contractor Engagement Date: November 16, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: V. Sattui Winery About Me: I'm an East Coast girl, living on a tiny little island in the Pacific, twirling, leaping, and shimmy-ing my way through life, and now, wedding planning! I'm equal parts nerdy and cool... okay, mostly nerdy. I love satin bows, red lipstick, black & white graphic anything, the shine of sequins and the sound of a champagne "pop". My favorite books are The Portrait of a Lady, by Henry James, and Tender is the Night, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I can also conjure a pretty good Patronus Charm. I started my appreciation for good red wine while traveling on the high seas, and it's only fitting that my passion for wine drinking led me to my Napa-bred honey. We bonded over bottles of Cabernet on my oceanfront porch and haven't looked back since. We're sealing the deal at a winery in the Napa Valley on a 'perfect ten' of a day!
About Mrs. Barrettes

Yes, you read that right: it was the third fitting. You didn’t miss much for the second fitting—just lengthening the hem.

But I just have to preface this by saying, I almost fainted. Literally. I’m not quite sure what happened but I had been standing there, still as a mannequin for my seamstress, for about 8-10 minutes. I started to feel weird so I just took some deep breaths, and about 30 seconds later I felt sweat break out on my forehead. I didn’t want to bother her so I tried to ignore it and pull myself together. Then the stars came. If I didn’t speak up, I was going to end up on the floor!

“Omigod, Halina, I have to sit down, I think I’m going to pass out,” I practically whispered.

“Hold on, hold on, just one more pin!” She finished that pin, zipped me out and I melted on to her sofa in my underwear.

And then it passed. Just like that. I quickly dressed myself and apologized. She said that it was no big deal, and that she had a girl fall on top of her one time. She blamed it on nerves, hormones, and maybe not eating. But I assured her that I had just eaten breakfast, so it wasn’t that. I do feel like I’m going to get my “friend” in a few days, so maybe it had something to do with the blood flow to my brain. I don’t know, but I didn’t like it!

Remember on SATC when Carrie breaks out in hives while trying on poofy wedding dresses? Was I having a reaction?

Anyway, the dress is looking great. It’s about a week away from completion. Here is the half-finished neckline:

Obviously the right side is more complete. She wanted to check the cleavage on me before she really got into that. The lace will be symmetrical on both sides. Let me pan away a little so you can see my wonky face…

I can’t even eek out a real smile. I’m trying so hard to not pass out. “I’m fine! Really!” Not.

The back isn’t too different from when you last saw it, except she secured the lace to the back. The other side will look the same.

See that weird bunching in the back? That’s going to be fixed. The dress was an A-line, but I wanted it to be more fitted so she took the sides in, which caused the bunching.

Hopefully I will have a finished dress next week to show you! I’ll do my best to eat a bigger breakfast and remember some bright lipstick!

Have you had any fainting scares during your engagement? What was it due to?

You might have locked your knees without realizing it - added to the other factors, stress, maybe dehydration, etc. Remember brides to be careful at the alter too! :D

I have fainted so many times - not just during the engagement, but for years. It can be brought on for me by a multitude of things - needles (no tattoos for me), not eating for a period of time, medicine (even OTC cold meds), and fear. The first time it happened was the day after my high school graduation when I had bloodwork done. Before then, I always thought fainting would be kind of romantic. Not really - try sweating, nausea, and paleness. Hoping to avoid that on the wedding day :) The dress looks beautiful!

When I was younger, I used to faint in church (like, once every few months). The doctor said it was probably because I was locking my knees–if you stand still with your knees locked for too long, it can lower your blood flow apparently!

That dress is gorgeous and I think it’s amazing that you’re using your mom’s wedding dress.

It looks beautiful! Can’t wait to see it completely finished! As for your passing out experience, I broke out into hives all over my chest during one of my fittings. It freaked me out, because I was worried it would happen on our wedding day, too. (It didn’t!)

The very first dress almost made me pass out. It was overwhelming and not in a good way!

Gah! I had the same reaction during my last fitting. It ended in a panic attack when I realized my dress was laced too tightly to take the deep breaths I needed to recover. I didn’t want to tell anyone because I was afraid they’d think it was a Sex-and-the-City type freakout, but I eventually did tell my sister and I was fine again by the time we left the store. No freak-outs on the wedding day, so I don’t know what it was all about either.

My mom used to sew my clothes, and I started inexplicably fainting during a fitting for one dress - it turned out I was allergic to some chemical used to treat the lining she was using.

The same thing happened to me during my first fitting. The seamstress had warned me not to lock my knees but I didn’t pay attention so I ended ended up having to sit down for a while. It passed quickly. The next two fittings I made sure to pay attention to it and also on my wedding day. Your dress is so pretty!!!
