Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

An Open Letter to My Hair

September 16th, 2010 @ 3:11 pm by Mrs. Cardigan

Dear Hair:

Over the past 22 years that we have known each other, we’ve had a bit of a tumultuous relationship. There have been stretches of time when we got along just fine, and there have even been days where I thought you were pretty wonderful. Take, for example, the day that I got my high school senior photos done. We were on great terms that day.

Look at those curls! And that smile on my face…we were so happy then. Of course, we had some special help from the hair therapist that day. Very rarely have we gotten along that well without professional help.

Of course, then you have to take into consideration my entire childhood. We were NOT happy back then.

You seemed to want to repel yourself as far away from my head as you possibly could, resulting in my looking slightly I just stuck my finger in an electrical socket on any given day.

(Check out that bathing suit!)

I thought it would help if I just cut you all off and kept you really short, but that just seemed to make you even more mad. Those months of growing you back out are a very dark spot on my memories of my childhood. I don’t like to revisit them often, if I can help it.

Oh, and please don’t even get me started on how disgusted you seem to be about having to actually STAY in my head. My entire life, every time I have brushed my hair, huge chunks of you have come falling out. Forget about even getting to wear a white shirt—in 10 minutes I’m completely covered in my own hair. My bathroom floor constantly looks like someone just shaved their head onto it, and poor Mr. Cardigan is always walking around the house yelling “Your hair is EVERYWHERE!” (Bonus points for anyone who knows the Dashboard reference!) It’s not like it’s a health problem or anything, because Sister Cardy and Mom Cardy have the same problem. So, I don’t see why you insist on doing it.

When I got to college, I felt like maybe I had been taking the wrong approach all of these years. When I got frustrated with you, I would just cut you, but that never really seemed to placate you for long. Sure, you would calm down for a few weeks, but then you’d start hating me all over again and we were back to fighting constantly. I really don’t like fighting with you, hair. I want us to get along.

So, in an effort to make peace, I decided to dye you.

I loved the change, and you seemed to as well. Sure, sometimes you would get pissed if I used a brand you didn’t like, then you decided to turn red on me (and we both know that’s NOT an attractive look for me), but for the most part we were getting along.

Then.

You decided to start growing. Like…obscenely fast. It’s not normal, hair, and I don’t like it. I dyed my hair less than a month ago, and there is already about 3/4 of an inch of roots showing through. Roots aren’t cute, hair. You know that just as well as I do.

So why are you torturing me?! I thought our relationship was getting better—I really did! I can’t deal with dying you every three weeks…and I’m afraid to take you back to your natural color because of that other horribly mean thing you did to me. Oh what? You don’t remember. Let me remind you.

YOU WENT GRAY. At 21 freaking years old I found my first gray hair. Not. Cool. So, my worry is that I try to make you happy by taking you back to our natural color, but then you decide to just start growing out all gray. Because you’re really just mean like that.

So, I’m writing to you to ask for a truce. I’ll be nicer to you and stop complaining so much (and get you trimmed a bit more often) if you’ll just STOP MAKING MY ROOTS SHOW.

Deal?

Kthanks. Love you!

- Miss Cardigan

Hive, this is a serious cry for help. Any advice for me? Can I make my hair stop growing so fast? Do you like it lighter or darker? What can I DO? Help!

OMG, I found my first gray when I was in the 7th grade - 7TH GRADE!!!! I’ve slowly been going gray ever since - no matter the dye, the grays always come back.

I don’t mean to scare you, I would just love some advice too! I am slightly older than you (by almost 10 years), but nothing seems to be working any more… I’ve just resorted to camouflage (as my hairdresser likes to call it) where we do alternating lighter and darker highlights to try and blend the color. It makes me happy for all of 2 to 3 weeks.

It’s the best I’ve got. SORRY!

@Miss Bumble: I’m about your age too and started getting gray hair in my teens. Now they proliferate like crazy. And no, I don’t dye my hair. I don’t know what to do. It pisses me off. But then, my sister started having gray hair at 13 so…. Unfortunately Ms. Cardy, I can’t help you. I just learned to live with mine :(

I have a very similar love/hate relationship with my hair! Mine is always dry and usually likes to neither curl, wave or be straight. I put so much product in it and still can go days when it doesn’t get dirty or ever the way I want! It’s very frustrating. I hear ya!

You didn’t start taking something with Vitamin E in it did you? That helps hair grow faster, for those of you with the issue of it growing too slowly. (I feel your pain. I too am a snail.)

I would like to register the complaint that not only does mine grow slowly, but it is also violently curly. If I grow it to my bra strap when I straighten it, it doesn’t even hit my shoulders when I don’t. It is uncontrollable. My head is a war zone. It doesn’t grow downwards at all… just outwards. My hair gets bigger instead of longer. So attractive. It hates me.

I don’t really know what to tell you. I found my first greys at 10 and have been coloring it to cover them since I was in my early 20s (and to get rid of the nasty orange color it lightens to when left to it’s own devices - ick). Right now, my stylist colors it basically my natural color so when the roots grow out it’s not as noticable, all you see is some of the grey. I’m still workign on getting it to not be a giant puffball though.

Well, at least I know someone else with my same problem! About 3 weeks after I dye my hair the evil grays rear their ugly little heads. My fiance is also constantly astounded that I have any hair left on my head as it appears to all be in the shower drain. Anyways, I can’t help with the grays, but I recently switched to a sulfate free shampoo and it has really helped my hair quit breaking and falling out. I use the Loreal brand and you can find it at just about any drug store. Good luck!

@hilsy85: Yes! I was hoping someone would get that! :)
@missbeaglelove: Haha my hair is definitely long enough right now! I don’t need any more length! I’d love it if it would just stop growing altogether!
@ablet: Oh thanks so much! That is always so wonderful to hear!
@GuestBee: I just switched over to that shampoo too! I haven’t noticed a difference yet, but hopefully it will help!

I like your hair darker! I don’t know what to tell you to slow the growth. I think hair growth has to do with genetics and nutrition. You definitely don’t want to deprive yourself of anything just to slow down the growth.

I feel ya with the hair. Looks like we have the same lightweight frizzy texture. I’m looking forward to chopping mine off, there’s nothing more irritating than finding ridiculously long hairs all over the house. My vacuum just can’t handle it anymore!

Cardy, you are so funny! Whenever I complain about my grays, my mom reminds me how I was born with one gray hair. (Thanks for the support Mom!)

After the wedding, my hair is getting a chop and it’s first-ever color.

Have you tried semi-permanent hair color? I don’t have gray but I use it to go from light brown/dirty blond to a darker brown without the damage from permanent colors. Since you go darker, it may work for you. It washes out before it has time to grow out and show roots. It also makes your hair thicker and healthier. I use either Loreal Healthy Looks or Clairol Natural Instincts and both have been great.
