Mother of the Bride

September 16th, 2010 @ 11:23 am by Ms. Sloth

When we picked out the ring in November, I didn’t tell my mom. I wanted to, but then I didn’t want her (or anyone) to repeatedly ask me if Mr. S had given me the ring yet.

After we got engaged, I ideally wanted to tell her in person, but I knew I couldn’t wait that long, so I called her literally minutes after it happened. And she was disappointed, but not mad, that I hadn’t told her earlier.

But she’s totally supportive and is ready to help. And my mom is a woman of many talents, but her biggest talent is that she’s an incredible thrift shopper. I mentioned to her just the other day that for centerpieces, I’d like to have some mismatched glass vessels on the tables. I sent her these photos for inspiration:

Two days later, I got a text from my mom. She’d been thrift shopping and she had already found me nine glass containers. NINE! My mom kicks ass.

Here they are, in a crappy photo taken on my phone. But you get the idea.

How awesome is that?!?

Were your family members excited to pitch in for your wedding?

My mom has been “perfecting” her whoopee pie recipe pretty much since we decided to have those for the favors (what’s more characteristic of Amish Country, where I grew up?) She keeps calling me to tell me how excited she is about the new whipped filling she started using.

I love all the photos you sent her for inspiration, my fav are the ones near the bottom…esp that 3rd to last photo, I love the way the light captures the glass. And that means these will be perfect for your garden wedding. You mom found some great pieces.

I wish I had had the foresight to not tell my mom, or anyone else for that matter when we went ring shopping. It was tough to not feel pressured when everyday both of us were being asked “so are you engaged yet?!!” But back to your question, my mom and sister aren’t too craft oriented so I think I’ll be getting the most help on DIY projects from my bridesmaid/cousin who has a photography and graphic design degree. I know she’ll be helping me with save the dates, invites, programs etc. It’ll be nice to have at least one extra helping hand!

I’ve had my family contributing on different levels. I had already started collecting blue Ball mason jars when we got engaged (I had about 15 then) and I mainly told my dad because he is like magic at finding antique things for next to nothing.

Then, a few weeks later when I was coming home to visit again, I got a text from my older sister. She went to Salvation Army ON A WHIM, and she said they had 3 boxes of the jars for $3 a box. I replied back with “Buy them all”…. after a few more texts where she confirmed that they were indeed the blue jars, and that I didn’t care that they didn’t have lids, she texted me back that she got 52 jars for $18.

Now I’m just collecting smaller clear jars and bottles to use for candles to go with them on the tables. It really was a wonderful find!

My mom has been collecting milk glass for me ever since I mentioned the idea a few months ago (mind you, we aren’t even engaged yet!). By this point, we definitely have all the milk glass we need, she’s started selling off the more common pieces (that she knows she can find again) on Etsy!

I did the same thing - collected mismatched cut glass vases. I live in Philadelphia and my main source of vases was at a thrift store in the Port Richmond Plaza - I think it’s called “Super Thrift” (it often changes names). Check that place out - I must have gotten like 30 vases from there over the past year. Good luck!

@Miss Sloth - of course! I love a good deal and that place is great - they always have a ton of glassware although the selection varies from time to time. But since your wedding isn’t until May you should have plenty of time to gather up your vases. It’s in the same shopping center as the Thriftway Supermarket.

I called my mom right after he popped the question too — she already knew it was coming b/c he asked my parents for permission a week earlier. But by the time we went back to our hometown a few days later my mom had purchased EVERY bridal magazine on the racks and was ready to dive in! Love her…. :)

Your mom rocks! FMIL Locket is the same way I mention something and a few days later we have said item (or she magically already has one) ahh the joy of her thrift shopping habit.
