Mrs. Hippo's Picture
Mrs. Hippo, New York City/Dallas, TX Age and Occupation: 34, Event Planner for a Non-Profit Fiance's Age and Occupation: 35, Finance IT Engagement Date: August 8, 2009 Wedding Date: March 2011 Venue: Samuel Lynne Galleries and Marc Events About Me: I’m a thirty-something bride living in New York City and planning a modern-ish wedding in Dallas, Texas. I love trashy reality television (Jersey Shore, anyone?), online shopping, Sunday brunch, Central Park, and random celebrity spottings on the streets of Manhattan. While I love NYC, I miss good Tex-Mex, my college friends, central A/C, and being in close proximity to a Target. I’m thrilled to finally be planning an event that’s not work-related and to be marrying my best friend in what I hope will be a unique and personal ceremony followed by a reception with plenty of good food, good drinks, and dancing (regardless if it’s good or not).

Hair Inspiration = Veil Indecision

September 16th, 2010 @ 10:43 am by Mrs. Hippo

While my plan is to do my own makeup for the wedding, I will need someone do my hair. I know my limitations, and my hair is definitely one of them. Seriously. I can look passable for work or a night on the town, but for our wedding, not so much. It’s time to call in the professionals.

I’ve been growing my hair out since we got engaged, so I feel like it’s only appropriate to do an up-do. Not to mention that it would be a treat for me to see my hair pulled up in something other than a haphazardly tied hair rubber band. Here are the inspiration photos I plan to take to my hair trial:

So…clearly I like the side swoopy bang thing! My only concern is that I have a veil, and I’m not exactly sure what to do with it. It’s not a big veil. It’s a thin veil. An elbow length (or maybe its fingertip length?), pretty sheer veil. I was originally thinking that I would want it clipped in underneath my hair, kind of like this:

But the problem is, in all the inspiration photos I’ve picked, the hair in back is much lower than this 1980-something photo, so I’m not sure that the low veil thing will work. And I actually hate to cover up those oh so pretty ’dos with a veil. Part of me is thinking of scrapping the veil altogether and just going with some kind of stylish hair accessory. I wasn’t one who had to have a veil. In fact, I was pretty anti-veil for a while, but then I was convinced (or perhaps persuaded?) that a veil “finished the look” when I selected my dress. I’m not quite sure what to do, to be honest.

Anyone else have hair/veil indecision? What did you decide to do?

I think you could pull off either way. If it’s below your hair, it’s still above your neck, so it won’t look weird. It just depends on if you want to cover the bun or not. Good luck deciding!

I mainly want to say that I absolutely looove your hair inspiration pictures! So vintage and elegant and classy! If you like the idea of wearing a veil, maybe you could just have it carefully pinned above your hair for the ceremony and then remove it before the reception in favor of a hair flower (or some other type of smaller accessory.) Just a thought? I didn’t have this dilemma because I wore a birdcage veil! Good luck!

my vote is for no veil! a pretty hair flower would look amazing with the inspiration photos you posted.

I went through the exact same issue. In end I decided to ditch the veil.

If you want to have beautiful hair like that, you definitely shouldn’t cover it up with a veil. IMHO, veils are for simple up-dos. Since you are having your ceremony at an art gallery and not a church, I don’t really think the veil is necessary either. But it’s your call :D

If you would like to create the large, loose low bun like some of these photos suggest, you should try Whirl-a-Style. It hides in the hair and gives you a perfect bun. Ballet dancers love using it. You can make a messy bun by pulling out the hair once you create the chignon. Check out our website for more information!

I’m anti-veil, too. Seriously, you pay all that money to have your hair look fantastic and then you stick tulle over it?? No thanks

i mean you only wear the veil for what like an hour at most then take it off for the reception, right?
i was anti-veil for a while for that reason. then i feel in love with an etsy vendor that does birdcage veils! so i am rocking birdcage for my wedding day! *happy dance*

I didn’t really have indecision… but what I did was wear a veil (like yours, it sounds) for the ceremony and photos at the church, then ditched it on the way to the reception. it’s not in any of the pics we took during cocktail hour or after. I had a low-side hairdo and some pretty floral hairpins that were underneath the veil for the ceremony, but it didn’t bug me. they had their moment at the reception! I am so glad I took my veil off for the reception, I have no idea how brides keep one on all night without getting their head yanked around or the veil ripped out accidentally!

My hair was very similar to your inspiration photos on the day. I did wear a very sheer fingertip veil underneath. I loved it because it made me feel very bridal. I secured it with a bobby pin on each side (suggested by my stylist after I realised I forgot to bring the veil to the salon) which held just fine for the ceremony. I wore it underneath along with a haircomb with crystal and pearl details above the “low bun”. I wish I had pictures of this to attach! But I ditched the veil and comb (too heavy for the serious dancing that took place later on) before the reception.

I think if you have it go ahead and try it while you’re at the salon. They should be able to fix any out of place hairs that you have if you decide to scrap it all together. Just go with your gut and what makes you feel your best!

I love your inspiration photos!! I also didn’t mind skipping the veil (I was thinking of using a flower or brooch). However, my groom is more the traditional type and when I heard him saying that he could imagine me entering the church with my veil on I just knew that I had to wear one. I think that you should discretely find out what he would like the best; I’m pretty sure that his opinion will help you decide (at least that worked for me:P )

A pretty hair accessory would look GREAT with that style of up-do! I was orginally thinking the same thing until someone mentioned that “this is your only change to wear a veil” and I jumped to the veil-side.

I am obsessed with low side poby updos and well. I bought a huge hair flower from etsy and LOVE IT with the side pony.

I agree that clipping that veil under your inspiration do (which I LOVE!) would be way too low. Could you switch to a birdcage? That would like great with that hair!

i would definitely go with a chic hair piece, or maybe one with LIGHT light netting or tulle. specially if you have side swept bangs or a ’swoop’ across your head!
