Mrs. Sand Dollar's Picture
Mrs. Sand Dollar, Houston Age and Occupation: 24, Graphic Designer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, Electrical Technician Engagement Date: January 8, 2010 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: MacLean Park About Me: I'm a domestic diva down to the core. I heart cooking, sewing, baking, decorating and making sure we have a hand-crafted home. The best part about the wedding is I get to incorporate it all! I make sure I put my art degree to good use by screen printing, craft knife cutting, and a whole lotta graphic design. We're having a big-time party on a small-time budget, and I promise to show you a boot-scootin', barbecue-eatin', finger-lickin' good time! Mr. Sand Dollar and I spend most of our time on DIY projects or traipsing around the outdoors with our two pooches Rory and Juno. I'm looking forward to sharing our journey with all of you!
About Mrs. Sand Dollar

Oh, Elephant, why did you have to torture me so?!? You posted this picture yesterday, and now I can’t get it out of my head.

Please Help Me... I Can't Stop Myself! : wedding diy guestbook houston Bench bench

(source)

I haven’t thought of this idea in AGES, since I followed Mrs. Apple Cider in the first place. And then you go and post it willy-nilly and throw me into a tizzy. All I had to do was flip my computer over to Mr. SD and simply say, “Look at this.” We had the whole sneaky smile thing going on. It’s awesome! And we already have the bench built—the one my bridesmaids helped me with during my Bachelorette Craftapallooza:

I literally just took this out to my garage and sanded it yesterday in order to paint it this weekend, until I read Elephant’s post. I had planned to have just my girls sign the bottom, then paint it white for the foot of our bed. But now, we can have everybody sign the top, and it will be even more special. But what about the quilt?

Please Help Me... I Can't Stop Myself! : wedding diy guestbook houston Img 212 IMG_212

I’m not sure if I want to lose the quilt. It’s such a cute idea, and still something that will hold a lot of meaning for us. So, while I was writhing in agony, Mr. SD announced that we will let the hive vote. You won him over with the last one, on what we’ll ride away on (which will be my cute little scooter) so we need your help again! Should we do the bench, or the quilt? Or should we do both? Are two guest “book” options too many? Will people do one or the other? I can make a new sign with no problems, but is it asking too much? I don’t want to go over the top with too many unconventional ideas.

So cut a girl some slack, and tell me what to do!

I did two guestbooks at my wedding last weekend. I had one at the church and one at the reception. No one seemed to have a problem and we got almost everyone on both. I had the address card box and the photobook and I love both of them soooo much now. Do what your heart wants.

Quilt = Post Wedding Craft To-Do

Bench= No work required!

I would keep the quilt out for cocktail hour - people will have more time to write something out. And then keep the bench around the entire reception…it’s just a signature, it’s not too hard!

HAHAHAHAHA :)

I voted for both! Like @jenandchris: mentioned, people can write out the quilt one earlier on and have all night to go sign the bench.

I vote you do the bench. Then make a small quilt with things significant to you and Mr. SD. So it’s still a combo punch and each has different meanings.

someone gifted us one of those picture frames that everyone signs and you put a photo of the couple in the middle. it was set up near our guestbook and while some people chose one over the other, most signed both :)

Both! I was a two-guestbook bride, with a photobooth and a rock-concert-like poster, and I love them both. The poster allowed folks to just sign their names, and the photobooth book to elaborate. (I know some folks only did one or the other, but was totally ok with that.)

My sister surprised me with having folks sign quilt squares at our Rehearsal Dinner…. so in a way I have three! If you’re thinking two at the reception is overkill, maybe you could have the quilt squares at your RD instead.

LOVE the idea of the bench though. Make sure to get good Sharpies.

What if, instead of a quilt, you made a cushion for the bench with the fabric? Then you sorta get both…

I like the idea of the quilt, but if you actually use it washing it will make the messages fade. I like the idea of signing a bench and then varnishing it so the messages last forever.

I vote for bench - less work afterwards (varnishing vs. SEWING A QUILT). Plus, as jordynrose said, it’ll last longer.

Hi Everyone - long time no post for me but I had to chime in. The bench guest book was one of the best decisions we ever made. We love it so much! It is in our living room and we get compliments on it all the time but even better…it reminds me of all of the great people that were there.

@jenandchris: The problem is there’s no cocktail hour, the ceremony and reception are in the same pavilion. I think we’ve decided on the bench for sure, now I just have to see whether we want to do both or not.

@Mrs. Apple Cider: It looks gorgeous! I love how it turned out. I think we plan to paint ours white and use silver paint pens to sign, then varnish over the top. But we’re still working on the details

How about the bench for your wedding party and the quilt for all the guests? But either way I think it’s a great idea.

Both! Some will sign one, some will sign the other, some will sign both! This way, hopefully everyone will sign at least something.

I think you could totally pull off doing both!! I bet people will just sign the bench, but maybe you could tell them if they wanted they could draw or give you sweet words of encouragement on the quilt. Plus how special will it be to have all your friends and family wrapped around you on a chilly night and folded up on your gorgeous signatured bench on a warm one?

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s been thinking of the bench since I saw it posted by Miss Elephant!! =]
I think it’s one of the best ideas I e seen in a loooong time!

I voted for you to do both! You could put the quilt squares on the tables, if there’s enough room?

I agree with Miss Elephant! I also agree that Miss Elephant’s post made me reconsider a few DIY projects…I wanna do it all! It’s all so pretty! ;)

I say do one or the other, and go with your heart. I think it’s best to not overwhelm your guests by giving them too much they need to do while they are there. Personally I love the quilt best!
