We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. About Mrs. Meerkat

Well, ladies, I am hooked. I went down to our local beauty school’s salon and had my very first manicure and pedicure. I thought it was going to be boring and unpleasant, but I could have sat there all day with my feet in the little spa thing. I don’t think I have ever been so relaxed. If you have never had a pedicure, let me show you what you’re missing:

OK, so the beauty school didn’t have equipment this fancy, but the little foot spa they did have worked wonders, and to catch their weekly manicure-and-pedicure special for $17 was fantastic. I can only imagine what this is going to feel like in a spa. *blissful sigh*

So what prompted me to give this a try? I had been thinking heavily about doing this for our wedding, and having two friends get married on back-to-back weekends was just the motivation I needed. One of the things I did learn, though, is if your nails grow very fast like mine do, after a week your French manicure is going to need to have some touchups or it may even need to be redone. Being the cheap person that I am, I decided I would do it myself, and the results were fantastic. So it seemed only right to pass along what I learned.

First, let me introduce you to French-manicure strips. French-manicure strips are these little curved stickers that you place on your nails to serve as a guide for painting them. They can be bought in any store and look like this:

Here is how I did my DIY French manicure:

  1. Place the stickers on your nails following the natural line where your skin and nail separates.
  2. Once they are all on, use a bottle of white or off white nail polish to paint the tips. Use at least two coats of polish. (Paint your thumbs last so that if you have any problems you can use your thumbs to wipe off any excess polish.)
  3. Once completely dry, remove the stickers and put one coat of see-through pink polish over the entire nail, including over the white tip. Don’t worry; the pink will blend right into the white.
  4. After the pink polish is completely dry, add a clear topcoat to protect it.

Yes, it really is just that easy. When I was done, this is what they looked like (don’t mind Wicket in the background—he was just checking out my nails, too):

I have to say, I am very pleased with how they came out, and for just a couple dollars. Anyone else have any tips for DIY French manicures?

I wish I could do that! My nails are super short and stubby- so I tend to stick with acrylic if I’m feeling the french manicure kick!

And I’m glad you joined the wonderful world of mani/pedi’s! They’re so wonderful! I may need one today.. hehe :)

sorry, no tips…I had a french mani done for my wedding and LOVED it though!

as for the pedicure…you can have em! lol - I DID have one done the day before my wedding - for my bridesmaids…but it was “torture”…I HATE having people touch my feet (although I do have a tattoo on one, go figure! lol). My husband would have his feet rubbed all day long if I’d do it, but me, nope. don’t even think about it! lol.

your nails DO look cute! :)

Very cute! I have actually never had a manicure or pedicure. It is on the long list of beauty related firsts that will be tied to the wedding (along with tanning beds and having my eyebrows professionally shaped). I have however used the stickers for quick at-home french manicures and found them to be sufficient. It’s easy to screw them up (or at least it is for me…) but when you get it right they look great.

@Gamer: My eyebrows are on my list of first along with learning to apply makeup. *cringe* I can fix your car but this girl stuff scares the crap out of me! LOL

My sisters uses a nail polish pen to paint on the whitefor her French tips. I have seen them at Ulta but haven’t tried it yet.

Gahhhh, I gotta try this! I hope it is as fool-proof as it sounds because I am really bad at doing my own nails. Yours look great!

@MissDonnaAnne: Thanks. I think that might be the first time anyone has said I have skill with something this girly. LOL =)

@lostinthemission: That was exactly how I felt before I looked up how to do it myself. So I happy I thought to Google it! =)
