Mrs. Hot Wings's Picture
Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!
About Mrs. Hot Wings

I really didn’t care about having a card box. I was totally convinced that it was acceptable to collect the gifts and cards when we visited tables as most Vietnamese American weddings do. Mama Hot Wings pushed all the other “norms.” I purposely saved the DIY card box to be one of my last projects. Look at its size! It would be ridiculous to make it in advance and mail it or travel with it back to San Diego. But it’s even more ridiculous to wait until the last minute and think you’ll just put something like a big ol’ card box together with scraps and such, right? Well, ridiculous? Yes. Happy ending? Also yes.

See?

Before the happy ending, there was definitely a lot of head scratching.

I sure have a way with these haphazard projects where I just get lucky. Or maybe it’s because I surround myself with some pretty talented people who actually have vision. Can someone say, “foreshadowing”? *wink wink*

So first, I searched for an appropriately sized box. With all of the mailing, gifts, Costco, and BevMo buying we had been doing, I had a lot of different boxes to choose from. I ended up choosing this Frei Brothers wine box that we got from Costco.

Protect the Money...I Mean, the Cards : wedding decor diy reception san diego Diy0000 I wanted to cut the hole for the cards at the top of the box, so I cut off two of the flaps. Uh oh, bad idea! Don’t do as I did, do as I am about to tell you… don’t cut off two of the flaps. If you do, there won’t be enough support for the 2 flaps still left on the box. In other words, it will be real easy to push the top of the box completely in.

If you do accidentally cut of the flaps like I did, you will need to put a long strip of tape under the flap to support it. Then draw a hole for the cards to be dropped in.Protect the Money...I Mean, the Cards : wedding decor diy reception san diego Diy000002

Cut the slot from the cardboard. I got released from this job and demoted to photo taker after messing up and cutting off 2 of the box flaps. Watch Hottie Cousin work the card box. She cut out the card slot and proceeded to cover the entire box with wrapping paper using double-sided tape (my fave sticky product).

Not everyone was working hard on the box. See Mama Hottie laughing at her sister for laying on the couch while the others tried to figure out this card box situation?

Be cautious about making fun of people during the wedding DIY projects. If you mock them, they are likely to feel compelled to help. Three sets of hands and one box? Uh yeah. You’ll see.

Protect the Money...I Mean, the Cards : wedding decor diy reception san diego Diy0001 Ultimately, the box turned out well. It took longer then it probably should have. It took many more brains than it probably should have, but it became a fun memory to have. Did you notice that I have used that wrapping paper before? See below, it’s the same wrapping paper we used for our invitation envelope liners.

Protect the Money...I Mean, the Cards : wedding decor diy reception san diego Diy0003 Did you notice that the box didn’t have a special easy way to open up to the cards? Which meant, retrieving the cards looked something like this…

Protect the Money...I Mean, the Cards : wedding decor diy reception san diego Img 365 And no more pretty box. How much did this box cost us you ask? Nada. All the materials were laying around the house.

Was a card box necessary for your wedding? Did you make something or just buy one?

you’re right, mrs. hottie - this is one funny and fond memory you’ll always have :) and knowing my zany family and friends, we’ll have a similar instance during our little beach wedding prep.

we’re still scratching our head to figure out the best card box for our beach day. and like you, this is the last project on our list…so we’ll be d.i.y-ing it too!

im saving the box for very last too…i dont have room for boxes of wedding stuff around the house as it is let alone an empty box holding nothing…we are using a smaller box because we are having a small wedding and most of the people coming are either our friendors or people helping to pay for it lol.

We’re having some “Up” themed things at our reception so our cardbox is a white metal mailbox we got from the hardware store painted with our names the same way Carl & Ellie painted their mailbox. :)

So simple and perfect! We aren’t having a card box because my family rolls the Asian way- you know what I’m talking about, no card, just cash in the decorative envelope.

I was planning on covering a cardboard box with satin and ribbon, but then one day I found that I already had a storage box I bought years ago, AND in our wedding colors! I cut a slit in the lid, wrapped some ribbon around the lid and box and glued some silk flowers on top. A very low cost card box!

Very cute (and cost effective) project!! We are going to have a box, and right now the pieces are being stored in the ever growing pile of wedding stuff in our guest room closest.

This turned out well. Too bad you had to bust into it to get the cards, but at least that kept them inside.

Thanks for this post, it came at the perfect time. I’ve been waiting to find the perfect vintage piece that will make a great card box and with two weeks to the wedding, I don’t see it happening! I love the idea of using things already on hand and not spending more money!
