Mrs. Lioness, Atlanta Age and Occupation: 25, Physical Therapist Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Attorney Engagement Date: August 29, 2009 Wedding Date: April 2011 Venue: Anthony’s Fine Dining About Me: I’m a Southern girl with New England roots. I say "wicked" and "y’all" in the same sentence and I like to drink sweet tea with my lobster. Mr. Lion and I are both former Floridians now living in Atlanta, which fortunately is still SEC country...Go Gators! We both love baseball, coffee, traveling, cooking, and playing Words with Friends with each other on our iPhones all day long. I’m very passionate about the things and the people I love, and I tend to plan things with all of my heart...our wedding, of course, is no different! Oh, and also Mr. Lion is a first generation American of Cuban descent. I may look more like Lucy than Ricky, but I’m doing my best to incorporate some Latin elements into our vintage-garden-Southern wedding!

With a Little Help from my Friends

September 18th, 2010 @ 2:30 pm by Mrs. Lioness

One of the easiest ways this budget bride has saved money is by recruiting help wherever possible. Fortunately, I happen to have some pretty talented friends! I love the concept of a “friendor” because I feel that it makes a wedding more personal and intimate. On our wedding day, we’re most looking forward to being surrounded by the people we love. Why not have that feeling extend to our vendors, too?

The first friend we hired was Sister Lioness. Though Sister Lioness is currently studying “Teaching ASL as a Foreign Language” at Columbia (bee tee dubs, their mascot is a lion…woot!), she does some pretty sweet graphic design on the side. It’s more of a hobby for her, but she kind of rocks at it. I don’t know much about graphic design, but I do know that I’m a sucker for fonts. Choosing fonts happens to be Sister Lioness’s favorite part of graphic design, so it’s been great to have her artistic eye around! She’s designed our invitation suite, and I plan to collaborate with her for other paper projects like programs and menus. Here’s a sample of her work, a little ditty she came up with to give to family and friends when she moved from Gainesville to NYC:

Ugh. So sorry I had to censor that!

My friend Kealoha used to be a makeup artist. Though she has now chosen a different career path, she still does a few gigs on the side. A recent gig was our mutual friend’s wedding. She did the makeup for the bride, as well as all of the bridesmaids and the mothers. Best of all, she gifted this to the bride as her wedding present. Naturally, I asked her nicely to grant me the same favor, and I was psyched when she gladly obliged…though not nearly as psyched as Mama Lioness was. What can I say?! The woman likes to be pampered!

Next, we have my cousin Chris. Chris is my age, and he and Mr. Lion became good buddies one day at Disney World. It was only their first time meeting face-to-face, but by the end of the day they were yelling Wookiee noises back and forth to each other on Star Tours. (Male bonding is so strange, is it not?) Chris happens to be an ordained minister in the state of California. When two nonreligious Lions started to put a ceremony together, there was only one name that came to mind. Of course, Chris was happy to look into the requirements to transfer his ordainment to Georgia, and we’re all really looking forward to having him in such an important role on the big day.

Lastly, we have our friend Evan. Evan is engaged to my PT school friend Christina, and together they form some of the greatest couple friends these Lions could ask for! Evan also happens to be a wedding photographer…a good one, too! They recently moved to Jacksonville, but Evan still happily agreed to shoot our wedding. And our engagement pictures. And some random pictures for our OOT bags. Here’s a sample of his work, from a photoshoot he did for our graduation:

Our main goal in wedding planning has been to include as many of our loved ones as possible in the day–which in my opinion, includes having them help as much as possible. I can’t wait to see what our community effort turns into. It’s great having talented friends and family!

Sounds like you have a group of super talented friends! My only friendor was my Uncle who designed our invitation suite and our table numbers.

Isn’t nice to have such fabulous and talented friends?!?! We got very lucky too. My MOH and 1 of my BM are both hair stylist, so they agreed to do ALL of our hair the day of, score! Plus BM knows a girl that can do our makeup for pretty inexpensive. Our photographer is a friend of a friend, so we got a pretty nice discount there. Our officiant happens to be my grandpa - I’m the youngest grandchild (and last) to be getting married, so my entire family is looking forward to this! Our videographer is my sis-in-laws brother, and a sister of a groomsmen did calligraphy on our invitations. It was actually really surprising how many people were willing to help (and we of course “paid” them for their time, I feel bad!!)

wow! hooray for you, miss lioness! your friendors are all impressively talented at what they do and it’s a blessing to have people you love be a part of making your special day come to life :)

we are also thrilled that one of my wonderful girlfriends is also a professional hair stylist, so she will be doing my hair for our little beach wedding. one of my dearest friends in the world will be our emcee and ipod dj for our reception and the rest will help with all of the diy decor i have up my sleeve!

Heck yeah! I heart our friendors and familyors… :) We had one set of epics from a friend. My aunt did all our flowers. Mr. HW’s uncle was a officiant. It’s great!

@Miss Meerkat: A lucky lion indeed!

@sapphirebride: Yes! “Community effort”…nicely put! That’s exactly what we’re trying to achieve. I love the sense of unity it creates!
