Mrs. Meerkat, Kalamazoo, MI/Riviera Maya Age and Occupation: 30, Application Engineer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 23, IT Consultant Engagement Date: July 26, 2008 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: Al Cielo / La Laguna About Me: I’m a tech-savvy tomboy with an affinity for hot tea and good sushi. Us Meerkats are just a couple fun lovin’ geeks from Michigan. We love anything having to do with movies, books, video games or technology and we hold a special place in our hearts for our two very spoiled shih-tzus, Wicket and Bravo. We also LOVE to travel. We love it so much it only took us 12 hours after we got engaged to decide to have a destination wedding. We are working our little Meerkat tails off planning a rustic-chic, travel themed destination wedding in the Riviera Maya with a semi-formal, vintage-turned-modern, outdoor at home reception back here in Michigan.

First Dance

First Dance : wedding reception music riviera maya Firstda FirstDa

Lets face it. Mr. Meerkat and I are about as opposite as you can get. He is traditional, and I am so very not. So when it came to picking out our first dance, we had VERY different ideas. I wanted to go for a more flashy, choreographed first dance, and he wanted the traditional sway-like-high-schoolers first dance.

I really want to dance to “Conquest” by the White Stripes:

Can you imagine twirling around salsa or tango style to this song? *wistful sigh* I can totally see it along with the surprised expressions on everyone faces!

Mr. Meerkat had something in mind more along the lines of “At Last” by Etta James:

Needless to say, we were not seeing eye to eye on things. I was pretty sure we would be debating this right up to the last minute, but then I had one of my amazing and possibly crazy ideas. Want to hear it?

What if we have the “sway like high schoolers” dance to the first part of “At Last,” then we do some kind of cut over to “Conquest” with a choreographed dance? That way we get the more romantic first dance that Mr. Meerkat wants, and I get the more “Holy wow, I can’t believe they did that” first dance. To my surprise, Mr. Meerkat was 100% on board with this idea.

By the way, we were not the first couple to think of this, either. Look at this video I found on YouTube:

Did you have a hard time choosing your first dance? Did you and your fiancé disagree like Mr. Meerkat and I did?

We actually picked out our first dance song before we even got engaged. A couple of days before he proposed (little did I know) my boyfriend was randomly listening to songs on his computer. Dave Matthews Band is one of his favorite bands, and he off-handedly suggested that “The Space Between” would make a great first dance song for when we got married and I agreed. Several days later at his sister’s Sweet 16 party, the DJ played “The Space Between” and we started dancing, and in the middle of the song he got down on one knee and proposed.

We’re going to pick a lovely, traditional, flowing, romantic song–and then toward the end cut away to Cotton Eye Joe, because my side of the family will LOVE it!

Haha, I love meerkats!
But on the topic, our first dance was a disaster, since that time I know that no matter what song you choose, it’s up to you to make it work! :)

Great idea! I’m sure yours will be better, though, if you have original choreography. They stole theirs straight from Hitch! :)

We are talking about doing a choreographed dance too… if we can just figure out the song! Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Great idea! You mentioned possible dance styles for “Conquest”, and I’d like to suggest the cha cha. You can hear the “1, 2, cha-cha-cha” beat throughout most of the song, and it’s a great sexy dance, very similar to salsa, that’s really fun to perform.

@StarryEyedStranger: OMG THNAK YOU!! I had no idea what the rhythm was called! Salsa was the only thing I could think of to describe it. =)

No problem! I just found another option, though: paso doble. I’ve heard it’s a hard dance to learn, but it’s definitely the best fit. And… surprise! There’s a paso doble to “Conquest” on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjiUccrdrPw
I’m still partial to cha cha, though. ^^ And tango might also work, but I don’t know enough about the dance to have an opinion either way. Whichever style you choose, it’s going to be a great first dance!

I love the idea!
I have exactly the same problem and we’re also considering dance two stiles (a traditional love song then salsa).
We are planning take some dance classes… let’s see…
