Makeup Counter vs. Airbrush

September 20th, 2010 @ 5:19 pm by Mrs. Elephant

I don’t wear much makeup on a normal basis and will be looking for a little help for our wedding. As you may remember, we technically had two engagement sessions. For the first one, Mama Elephant hooked me up with a specialist at the Clinique counter. Janice did a wonderful job, but unfortunately there were some parts of it I wasn’t a huge fan of.

I think the thing I didn’t enjoy the most was the foundation. I know that African American skin is prone to being oilier, but I was almost embarrassed when Lynn (our amazing photographer) would have Mr. E put his nose to my cheek. When he pulled away there would be a brown spot on the tip of his nose that I would have to wipe away. On my wedding day I do not want to have to worry about hugging anyone, or makeup coming off on something white…you know, like my dress. ;)

I didn’t take any pictures after the Clinique makeover, but here are a couple refreshers from our engagement session. (Excuse the sleepy eyes in the second picture.)

When Lynn asked for a mini sunset session, I jumped at the chance. This time I had an airbrush trial scheduled, so it worked out perfectly because I was able to make use of the trial rather then just going home and watching Wednesday-night TV afterward.

Here’s the before picture (warning! Wayne and Garth extreme close-ups coming):

And the after shot. Sorry for the crappy bathroom lighting!

Airbrush makeup is more expensive, but for me it was well worth it! It was a very light, barely-there feeling. Kristin (the makeup artist) also added some false eyelashes that really stood out. You’ll also notice that we went with a lighter shade of lipstick thanks to Mama Elephant, who packed some samples in her purse. What would I do without Mama E??

And here are some refreshers from our second session. Notice the eyelashes in the second one? So much more defined than my actual lashes.

If you are getting your makeup done for the wedding, have you looked into airbrush makeup? Any tips for controlling the shine from oily skin?

Um, I’d like to know this too because I have African skin that gets oily. I hate wearing makeup because I’m always scared it will come off on everything. I love both types of make up on you though.

Your eyelashes look AMAZING! So so so pretty. I too was worried about makeup coming off on the dress so my makeup artist sprayed some sort of “fixer” onto my face once the final application of makeup was on, yet I still ended up with a slightly soiled dress by the end of the night. Oh well.

Your lashes definitely pop in the second batch of shots - and it sounds like you’re MUCH comfier and happier with the results. Note to self: try a few options out when the time comes. Thanks, Miss Elephant!

I had my makeup done at MAC in the Galleria or North Park Mall and I thought they did a spantastic job! I was out late that night and slept in full makeup. When I got up I still looked good! lol I’m definitely going back there to have my make up done for the wedding. My skin is really oily as well so I ended up buying the same powder they used but I actually didn’t need it at any other point in the evening. Your make up look great Miss Elephant!

Airbrush makeup is like magic, and you look great in it! I loved wearing it on our wedding day, because I have oily skin, and it stayed on so well, even in the heat. I only had to apply pressed powder to my nose a few times, and that was hours and hours after the airbrush makeup was applied.

@Cheeks11: @Mrs. Cola: The airbrush artist did package up some powder to help with the oil, but since we were only out for an hour I didn’t test it out. I will definitely have it on the ready for the wedding day!

Wow, you look beautiful with the airbrush makeup (and without any makeup too of course)! I’ll definitely have to look into it. I haven’t heard of any place near me doing it…bummer!

Love the eyelashes, I wish I could have done them but I wear glasses so it wouldn’t have mattered

I’ll be honest - I liked the second set of photos better. I wasn’t sure why, because they were all beautiful, but I thought you were more striking in the second set. Now I know why! I think the airbrush is definitely worth it, and seeing your difference makes me excited about it!

airbrush makeup was a disaster for me. i looked like a terrible geisha. I would avoid airbrush makeup like the plague.

@chrispygal: Thank you and I completely agree! I actually wanted to kick myself for not booking the trial for the first set of pictures!

Airbrush all the way!!! I am African American and usually with regular makeup I look like I dipped my face in a vat of Crisco before the day is over; I did airbrush for my wedding day and went ALL TEN Hours with no more than a dab of powder on the bridge of my nose once the entire night! I say go for it Miss E!

Miss Elephant, I can’t figure out how to send you a PM so this is the best I can do — I just happened to run across this tape that matches your color scheme and I know you were doing some DIY and thought it might interest you. I’ve just discovered this washi tape tonight and have no experience, but it’s sooooo pretty!!

Love the pics with your dog! Adorable! And the makeup looks great. The lighter lipstick is just the right color!

I want airbrush bad but my stylist doesn’t do it. I’m not willing to go elsewhere, so I will have the traditional. It looks wonderful on you!
