About Ms. Sloth

First Foray into Dress Shopping

September 20th, 2010 @ 4:14 pm by Ms. Sloth

My first experience with dress shopping was pretty casual—no appointments, no reservations, just me and a few malls. I wasn’t planning to buy a dress yet, but I wanted to at least get an idea of what works on me. See, even when I was at my thinnest, I still had a hard time buying dresses for anything. I have big boobs, so I usually have to size up to fit them into anything, and I don’t have much of a waist, so underneath the boobs I’m kind of a rectangle. It’s frustrating.

Also, I was hoping to find a non-traditional dress—something from a department store instead of a bridal shop.

My first stop was the Franklin Mills Mall, which is a discount/outlet mall in northeast Philly. They have a Neiman Marcus Last Call outlet and an Off 5th Saks outlet. I used to see formal dresses there all the time, when I didn’t need one. So I trekked out there and, unfortunately, I found nothing. They had a handful of formal dresses, but none that were white or ivory. I went into the BCBG outlet and tried on a couple of short ivory dresses, but they were way too casual. Cute, though.

But since I drove 30 minutes outside of the city to hit up the mall, I decided to go into Group USA, a women’s formalwear store.

I’ve walked by it several times but never went inside, so I don’t know why I decided to hit them up and walk to the back to the bridal section. I looked around at the wedding gowns and was thoroughly unimpressed. But then I saw one that was maybe OK. Everyone tells you to try on everything because you never know, so I asked a saleswoman if I needed an appointment. She said no and got me the dress in my size (which is two to three sizes bigger than my street size, which was kind of discouraging even though I know it doesn’t mean anything) and set me up in a dressing room.

She left me alone to put it on myself, which was nice. There was no mirror in the dressing room, so I had to walk out and stand on the pedestal in front of the three-way mirror. And then something weird happened.

You guys. I sort of liked it.

Yeah, the super-traditional wedding gown from the prom store. I kind of got a bit giddy over it. Maybe it was because it was the first time I’d ever, in my life, tried on a wedding gown. It was totally not my style, but it was so much fun to try it on!

Here’s me in it. It’s a bad photo because the poor old lady was having a lot of trouble taking a photo with my phone. It’s blurry and the lighting is poor. But you can get the idea.

And here it is on the model:

It wasn’t my style, and I had no desire to buy it or anything like it. But trying it on was seriously a blast.

Afterward, I drove 40 more minutes to the King of Prussia Mall outside of Philly. This is a more upscale mall that has stores like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, etc.

Unfortunately, most of the stores were a bust. And it was really, really frustrating. Online, those department stores carry many white or ivory formal gowns. In person, there were hardly any. Bloomingdale’s had the biggest selection, but I couldn’t find a single bridal-type dress in anything bigger than a size eight. That really pissed me off. The average American woman is a size 12–14. They’re alienating a huge portion of the population.

I had slightly better luck at Lord & Taylor, where I found a very pretty Oleg Cassini dress for WAY under my budget. I’d need a bigger size to fit the bazooms, but you can get the idea from this photo:

I didn’t love it, but it is much more what I had in mind for my wedding gown: a simple, flowy, chiffon dress with an empire waist.

Anyway, that was my first try. I was hoping for a department-store dress, but I think I may have to go the traditional bridal-shop route, since those dresses have more support for my bod.

Would you consider buying your dress off the rack at a department store?

i love the oleg cassini style on you! much better than the tiered lace, which wasn’t as pretty imo on your figure. i never considered buying off the rack at a department store, but not because i didn’t want to, the idea just never crossed my mind.

Those are both very pretty! And I like the first one on you better than on the model! Looking forward to hearing more about your dress shopping experience!

I found my dress at a bridal salon, but since then I have seen so many cute dresses online an Macy’s, J-Crew and Nordstroms for way less than I paid. I think it’s a great route, though it sounds like it might be pretty time consuming…but fun!

I like the first one too. Honestly, I would’ve bought mine off the rack if I hadn’t used my dress as a coping mechanism, but I did, so it was expensive.

I totally would! I actually saw a really cute long white BCBG gown at the Macy’s in Freehold, size 8, so it would have never worked for me, but if anyone else is looking! Casual, flowy with applique flowers. Very cute!

I ended up going to the Nicole Miller salon right off Broad St. The woman was really nice, and I ended up buying my gown used (the same that I tried on) online for less than a third the original price. It’s a route I highly recommend if your gown has been debuted for a while. :

I do like the first gown on you the best but you look beautiful in both. I can’t wait to see your final pick. I bet it’s beautiful.

i agree, you look amazing in the tiered one - better than the model. i can’t wait to see what the dress you end up with looks like.

The tiered dress gives you more of a waist and makes you look curvy everywhere. You might want to think about not doing an empire waist - something with more structure will flatter your top and give you some curves down below to match.

I bought my dress online with Nordstrom’s - they send it right to your door and if you don’t like it you can return it in the store or back through the mail!

The first, tiered one is my wedding dress! Should I be embarrassed about that? Well, I’m not. ;-) I liked it on me, and it went with our southwest-style wedding, I thought. I never thought I would run across it on Weddingbee, so thanks!

You look nice in both of them, so I can’t wait to see what you end up with! :-)

That Oleg is boobalicious but also very flattering. I think in your size (or possibly with a minimizer bra on) this could be truly AMAZING on you.

Also, keep in mind that if the dress isn’t too thin, you could wear a corset with it. A few of my busty friends got into them via the Ren Faire circles, and have made converts out of a few of my busty non-Ren Faire friends. Apparently they are SO much better than a bra for the support.

I wanted to look at department stores for wedding dresses, but like you I was disappointed to find that they had hardly any of the dresses they showed online.

I’m going to have to do off the rack because I am attempting to find a dress in a month. This is a really interesting post for me! I’ll make sure to call ahead to make sure the dresses I want to try on at Nordy’s are actually there.

LOL, I also went to that Group USA once to look at what wedding dresses they had, but nothing in there looked interesting to me (plus, I couldn’t stop looking at the hideousness of the prom dresses they offer). I also went to the Macy’s in Center City one afternoon when I had some free time. There were actually a couple of white/ivory dresses there but nothing that really said wedding.

you can order all the dresses you want from Nordstrom (free shipping over $200) and return them at the store! NO shipping either way :-)

I tried to find a dress that way, I have the same busty issues, but am also petite. I ended up ordering a dress from a traditional salon, but paid extra from the start to get a dress custom made from a muslin. The customization cost as much as many of the dresses from the dept. stores ($250), but it was SO worth it. I got my extra 4 inches of bust and 2 inches less of toso and another 2 inches less of skirt length. I’m not even sure all those changes would be possible if I hadn’t ordered a custom from a muslin!
