I Dream of…Sunburn

September 20th, 2010 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Earrings

The one and only wedding dream I have is a recurring one where I am in my pyjamas, very sunburnt for some reason, and my mother is saying, “you have to go out there and get married! Everyone is waiting!” In the dream I try and argue that I can’t get married covered in sunburn, but in the end I never win that argument.

You already know how pale I am, so you can probably infer that I burn easily. Very, very easily. Put me in the sun with no sunblock on for 10-15 minutes and I will get a not-so-attractive red tinge to my skin. Then it blisters, peels, and I’m left with a couple new freckles to add to my collection. When I was little I prayed that all my freckles would join up, but there was no such luck. Actually, these days I have lost many of my freckles (especially from my face) because I am a lot more careful with my skin. But I still worry about burning.

I really don’t want to end up like a lobster at our wedding!

See, our wedding will, as you know, take place outside in a garden during a New Zealand summer right when the sun will most likely be shining with all its might (if all goes to plan). Did I also mention that NZ is right under that annoying hole in the ozone layer, making the sun’s burning power even greater here?

On a normal day I would be hiding under as much cover as possible, but, oh yeah, I can’t exactly do that if I’m meant to be getting married.

My makeup artist assured me that my makeup will protect my face to an extent from the sun, and I also will have a parasol in my arsenal…but my dress is strapless. What about my poor naked arms, shoulders, and back? I have heard rumours that photographers don’t recommend you use sunscreen containing SPF on your wedding day because it can look bad in photos. Does anyone know if this is true or not? Because, the annoying thing is: I’m allergic to most sunscreens, and I only want to wear one I trust on the day, which means using this old friend:

Yup, SPF 50 baby lotion. I would rather not be separated from it if at all possible. So maybe I will just have to say “oh well” about it being SPF heavy. I would rather have a little bit of sunblock shine in photographs than be completely red in them!

Anyone else paranoid about getting sunburnt on their wedding day? Got any sun-protection tips for me? Maybe I will just have to find a tree in the garden and designate it as “my” sun-safe spot!

How about using a sheer/translucent mineral powder to “set” your arms/shoulders/back/chest? This should not rub off (as it has no color) and it’ll matte down the shine.

I use Bare Minerals, Mineral Veil for my face over tinted moisturizer. This might help! I’d try it out first, of course.

Using a big, fluffy brush you can gently sweep the powder over. Also, since it’s minerals- it shouldn’t irritate your skin!

I would think that a good photographer could edit the photos if the SPF did give you a shine in the photos. I would just talk to him/her directly and see what they say. I’m basing this on back in middle and high school the photographer would to “touch-ups” to fix imperfections and shine lol. And I’ve done it some in Photoshop, though I mostly work with graphics not photos.

This is totally my fear also, I am white white white. My go-to sunscreen is Neutrogena’s Dry Touch formula (the cream ONLY, the spray on kind DOES NOT WORK). Do you guys have Neutrogena over there? It smells so good, not greasy at all. Maybe give it a try?

I haven’t heard of photographers not wanting you to use sun block but it makes sense because of the shine. I’m having an outdoor wedding too and I am very pale and thought that using sun block was an option. I’ll have to talk to my photographer.

Hopefully there is a solution for both of us!

Another pasty skinned bride right here! I am adding an extra layer of protection by using a moisturizer under my makeup that has an SPF rating.

It had not occurred to me to worry about this until now! My face os covered because I use moisturizer with SPF daily. I hadn’t thought about my shoulders, back, and arms though!

Just an idea, I haven’t tried it but if you wear sunblock, perhaps you can also have a light sheen of gold glitter on your shoulders and arms? Maybe that would work to distract from a pasty cream look, and you’d look like you were supposed to be shiny!

I don’t have any personal experience ;) but Mr. E gets so red so fast! We went to DisneyWorld and on the first day he didn’t bother to put on the sun block that he packed. Yeah, on day #2 we were shelling out the big bucks for aloe to help his burn.

I totally rocked SPF 75 on our wedding day, I burn super easily too. Just be sure to remember your sunscreen at your rehearsal too! I only wore SPF 45 at our rehearsal, and put it on way too early in the day, so I got a little red the day before our wedding.

Miss Earrings, I’m also allergic to sunblock! Sunblock didn’t end up being an issue on my wedding day because of rain, but I wore sunblock for my engagement pictures and they came out absolutely fine. I understand your fear of trying new ones (I break out in an awful rash, even from a small amount of the wrong stuff, such as when people spray down their children nearby), but if you’re ever looking for new options, try the La Roche Posay Anthelios line. The prices are high, but my dermatologist recommended it (its specifically designed for people with sun allergies) and its been a lifesaver. The lighter versions soak right into your skin, so I have no problem wearing them to work, etc. The thicker ones are great on the beach, though they do give you a whiter sheen–I’m much paler than my normal pale in some of my honeymoon pictures. Good luck!

Thanks for all the tips :)
@sarah: and @kirabee: I will have to have a look at those brands and maybe give them a test run before the day to see if they might work :)@DoxieDoll: powder could be a good idea! I might mention it to my makeup artist and see what she recommends.
@Mrs. Cola: good to know other brides HAVE worn sunscreen on their wedding day and it doesnt have a bad effect on the photos:)

I agree with Doxie. Use a setting powder over the SPF. Hopefully that helps. Give it a test try.

Ask your photographer. Maybe there’s something they can do in editing to take away the effects of wearing sunblock in photos.

Hey I am super pale too and just a warning the SPF in bare minerals isn’t enough to prevent sunburn. I use it all the time and you will have to wear SPF under the powder.

I’m super pale too and I’m getting married outside–in the desert! I have to wear sunscreen! I asked a MUA about it and she said sunscreen under makeup shouldn’t cause much of a problem.

I am not worried about a sunburn, but I am worried about heat rash, which I get SUPER EASY! I don’t even know how to go about preventing it because it appears as soon as I get warm.

Aveeno oil-free FTW! It’s amazing. And unfortunately, my skin gives me lots of experience on this topic!

I am SO BAD at putting on sunscreen. I don’t burn, I’ve got that Japanese countryside skin, but I really should! Here’s hoping you’re okay on your wedding day!

I’m allergic to a lot of sunscreens too, but I’ve recently found a local one that isn’t shiny, doesn’t smell strongly, or make me break out/sneeze/etc.

Rocky Mountain Sunscreen

We’re putting the little one ounce tubes in our welcome (out of town) bags for people, when they check into the hotel, and putting out a big tube of SPF 30 next to the water, yarmulkes, and programs at the wedding. Everyone needs sunscreen, right?
