Mrs. Hot Wings, Chicago/San Diego Age and Occupation: 28, Professor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 32, Instructor Engagement Date: December 20, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2010 Venue: Ocean View Villas/Jasmine Seafood Restaurant About Me: I am a psychology grad student living in Chicago and planning my wedding to a fellow psych grad student. I am a Sunny So-Cal bred gal who trudged across the country to follow her love of psychology and ended up finding a partner in the process. I am overly passionate about anything I involve myself with. I am an activist, a foodie, a reality TV watching junkie, an over-analyzer, a photography obsesser, and am utterly cheesy to the core. This is a story of what happens when a boy and a girl meet, fall in love over academic dorkiness, and a shared love for life. We (mostly I) are planning our semi-destination wedding in my hometown of San Diego. We are excited to bring our families and friends together from across our lifespans to celebrate our future in a grand 400+ person culturally blended affair!

*personal photo*

I was debriefing the wedding the other day with my Hottie of Honor. I told her that the wedding DIY-ness was far beyond me and what I could handle. I went on to say, what now sounds ridiculous, that I would even recommend to future brides to consider having a full-on coordinator. GASP! You remember all that stuff I had going on in my life?

Graduating, moving across the country, starting a new job, the wedding, the blogging, and feeling overwhelmed, I can’t believe that no one told me to just hire someone to take over. Double gasp. Is this not Weddingbee? It’s so crazy because when Mr Hot Wings and I initially sat down to discuss our top 5 must-haves or must-dos for our wedding, I specifically said I wanted it to be a big ol’ crafting project. Ask and you shall receive…and indeed, I received.

The truth is that I take great pride in being able to say that we (mostly I) DIYed a heckuva lot for this wedding. I take even greater pride in the fact that we saved a ton of money because of the DIYing. And I take the most pride in the fact that our family and friends lived my vision of our wedding day and it ended up being a really great memorable event that I envisioned and brought to life (with the help of many, of course).

There really are tons of pros and cons to doing stuff yourself. Only you, your partner, and DIY helpers can really decide if the work is worth it. All of our situations are unique. Here are some questions you should consider that I’ve seen on the Bridal Insider boards, and now modified by me.

  • Do you generally enjoy being creative and crafty?
  • Do you already own general crafting tools (e.g., paper cutter, glues, tapes, bone folder, hole punchers)?
  • Will you use any of your new crafting tools again after this project?
  • Do you own or have access to computer graphics programs?
  • Do you know computer graphics programs well enough to design? Or can you learn relatively easily?
  • Do you have a great printer or alternative way to print?
  • Do you have the time to invest in a time consuming project?
  • Do you do well under pressure?
  • Do you restrain from getting frustrated?
  • Do you have space for DIY assembly and storage?
  • How clean do you keep the house?
  • Can you and your partner be okay with a cluttered house from ongoing DIY projects?
  • Do you have the time to devote to researching where to buy paper and tools online on the cheap?
  • Do you tend to DIY in other non-wedding aspects of your life?
  • Will you be okay with failure or will it hurt your ego too much?

These are important questions to consider. DIY projects can be costly if you don’t already own tools and supplies or know where/how to get supplies cheaply. They take up a lot of space, energy, and time. They hurt your ego and eat away at your sanity. Look at that first photo. Notice how all of our helpers are sitting on the floor crafting? That measly little coffee table definitely did not cut it.

At the end of the day, some things are worth it. Only you can decide for yourself.

I’ll leave you with two tips.

  1. You’ve heard it around the hive before from the likes of Miss Glasses and Mrs Trail Mix: KISS. Freaking KISS already! That’s Keep-It-Simple-Stupid! Seriously now. The next time you sit down to design a DIY project, repeat after me, “KEEP.IT.SIMPLE.STUPID!”
  2. It’s okay to buy some things. You don’t have to make everything yourself. No one will look down on you. If you need it, I’m giving you permission. Go ahead. Prioritize. Pick and choose. Give yourself a break.

One month past our wedding event, and it’s still pretty clear that I have not fully recovered from that final month of crafting madness and stressing over details. It was exhausting, but I’m pretty sure I don’t regret it. (wink) I don’t! I just want to make sure others are thoroughly warned.

What else did you consider before deciding if you would DIY or not?

The weeks leading up the our wedding I nixed a couple projects, mostly cocktail hour stuff. A tiny part of me still wishes I’d done them, but the sane part of me knows that no-one but me knows it never happened haha

I did a lot of DIY for my own wedding, but picked projects based on what I was comfortable with. Yes, I did my own invitations, but I worked in marketing and have a good bit of experience with designing paper products and choosing paper weights, etc. It wasn’t an unfamiliar project.

I also was comfortable DIYing more for our wedding because I knew our wedding wasnt going to be huge. I made 90 invitations; 100 programs; 100 favors. I was a bridesmaid for a friend this summer who had 250 guest. We made (very simple - one page with a bow) favors for her wedding and it was COMPLETELY different because of the extra 100 or so to create. That should be a factor, too.

Thanks for the tips! I have a strong feeling i will be scrapping a few projects that might become too stressful in the lead up to the wedding.

I must be nuts because I can’t wait to get to the DIY stage of planning. But I consider myself forewarned and better equipped thanks to the above advice!

I love crafting…and have a stash of supplies already available, but I think being completely DIY would completely stress me out.

I was crazy busy too before the wedding (law school grad, the bar exam, Mr. Jelly was deployed, etc.) but I’m also glad I DIY’ed so much of my wedding. The guests really noticed all the love that went into the details, and people were really impressed to hear it was all DIY. I do enjoy creative projects though, so I knew I didn’t want to have someone else make things or buy them.

Excellent post! While we are doing a lot of DIY, I am a firm believer in picking your battles when it comes to projects (ahem, our invites) and furthermore, I’m a lazy one and will almost always take the easy and simple ways to make things look good. Thanks for keeping it real!

Thank you for the advice. I tend to be a little over detail oriented and a control freak, in addition to loving to craft. However, I scrapped 85% of my DIY projects in exchange for my sanity. It’s worked well.

Seriously good things to consider. I pulled my hair out over wedding DIY on more than one occasion, and I generally love crafting!

Yeah, DIY was sooooo stressful and tbh, my stuff never ended up looking that good but I think that having a hand in so much of our wedding made me love it even more!

Great tips, HW! I love the whole DIY thing, but it is much more work than I ever imagined. Truly a labor of love!

Thanks for the reality check. Maybe I ought to think twice about paper flower centerpieces, making STD/invites myself AND baking the cake myself. Maybe 2 out of 3 ain’t bad?

You make some great points and my FH is great at keeping my DIY projects in check. I will say that I absolutely love that many parts of our wedding are made and designed by me. But I’m trying to remember that not EVERYTHING has to be DIY.

I think one of the best reasons to DIY (other than saving money) is if you can do it better than what you can buy.

I cringe at DIY that looks DIYed if you know what I mean (things that are falling apart or have big hot glue blobs, etc.)

I DIY’ed alot of stuff and loved every minute of it! I answered YES to pretty much every question on your list too, yay! Except the part about the cluttered house, because I’m to anal to let it stay cluttered lol. I either kept my mess contained or cleaned it up completely every time. I did all the paper products: invitations, escort cards, programs, menus, candy buffet signs, etc. But I am a designer by profession, and have access to the latest versions of photoshop and illustrator, so I felt comfortable taking this on. I love getting crafty, making jewelry and sewing, so I also made my BM’s jewelry and embellished simple clutch purses for them with fabric flowers i made. These are all things I started WAY in advance so I never felt rushed or like it was crunch time. @camrie: I totally agree, if the DIY project is sloppy then you might as well not do it.
