Premarital Counseling

September 21st, 2010 @ 11:59 am by Mrs. Elephant

Wiggles, rewind! (Can anybody name that movie?)

Back in May, Mr. E and I headed to Hot Springs, Arkansas for the first of three meetings with the family pastor who will be officiating our wedding. Since my parents have never been to the bed and breakfast run by our former pastor and her husband, they joined us for the drive up there so they could get some R&R for a couple of days.

We sat down with Kristie for a couple of hours and talked about everything from the wedding basics, money, and values to religion, vows, and the book Five Love Languages. It was truly amazing to really think about ourselves and what we want in our marriage, aside from the one day of celebration. I won’t lie—some of the questions were a little harder to answer then others, but Kristie was awesome and asked more questions to help us think deeper and truly answer questions such as what the other person is passionate about and what our personal goals are.

There were some homework assignments to take away, which included:

  • Reading Five Love Languages (discussed by Mrs. Paisley here) and making a plan to speak to each other in our languages
  • Finding our Meyers-Briggs personalities
  • Mapping out a financial plan
  • And my personal favorite, Mr. E taking the reins and planning a getaway for us

We will meet with Kristie in the fall or early winter when she is in Dallas, and then one last time a couple of days before the wedding just to relieve some last-minute stress and remember what we’re doing it for.

And just because I love pictures in posts, here’s one of my parents, Kristie, and us. :)

We had our first session already…. we had to read “Fit to Be Tied: Making Marriage Last.” For us, the book didn’t really bring to light any new issues we hadn’t talked about. I was nervous for our first session, but it was awesome! The pastor was great and laid back. We mostly talked about how we met, what our relationship is like (how we handle conflict), family backgrounds and any obstacles they impose on our relationship, and what we want and hope for our marriage, and how to work towards that.

I LOVED the 5 Love Languages book. It was so eye-opening!

Also, the movie? Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. “Finkle & Einhorn, what’s the connection?!” Love it! :)

That sounds pretty comprehensive. We did pre-cana, which I really enjoyed. But, I would have liked to include more elements like yours.

@amy13: YES! Mr. E and I say it all the time haha.

@JenBabe: @blondeeebuckeye: LOL, the shirt was a Christmas present from my cousin and his wife who graduated from The Ohio State, hehe.

The book is really good! We’ve only made it through about half so far, but I love the fact that we can talk about things and see things from each other’s point of view.

Sounds like a really valuable experience. I wish we had the time to do something like that!

We just began premarital counseling and I have to say it’s been a great experience so far and has been one of the best decisions we’ve made. We have only had one appointment so far, but we really like our therapist and feel comfortable around her which is very important. Already, we’re starting to make some progress, but we definitely feel better about our future now.
