About Ms. Sloth

Good ol’ David’s

September 21st, 2010 @ 9:06 am by Ms. Sloth

My second dress appointment was at the old standby, David’s Bridal.

I was kind of excited. And I was kind of nervous. And I was kind of apprehensive.

Excited because, well, playing dress-up is fun! Nervous because I’d never really done this before and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. And apprehensive because, while I have nothing against David’s, I never really envisioned that I’d get my dress there. I’d always dreamed of something unique and special, but as I’ve said before, I think my body is better suited for a traditional dress. I’m not crazy about wearing the same dress that so many other women will wear, but I can get over that. It’s not like any of those women will be at my wedding. And as long as it looks nice, is comfortable, and doesn’t cost a fortune, then I’m OK with it.

My mom and my bridesmaid K came along to give feedback because I knew I could rely on them to be honest.

And it was a surprising night.

I told the sales associate that I wanted dresses that were sleeveless but not strapless and simple, with no ruffles, beading, pickups, etc.

And those dresses were disappointing, at best. They did nothing for my body. The sleeveless dresses all had low v-necks that showed off my cleavage to a semi-pornographic degree, and the simple cuts showed off all of my figure flaws. Sigh.

And then, for the hell of it, I tried on a dress that was very pretty but totally not what I wanted. Strapless. And poofy. And princessy.

And I kind of had “the moment.” When I came out to show my mom and K, they kind of gasped. K, who turns pink at the merest hint of emotion, turned bright red. They loved it and I loved it. It is a definite contender for “the one.” And before that day, anytime I saw a bridal blogger mention “the one,” I gave a big old eye-roll. Now I am a starry-eyed, princessy bride-to-be who is excited about a ruffly strapless gown with rhinestones. WHAT???

It’s the Galina Signature tiered ball gown. And this is me, wearing it.

Good ol' David's : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Thedre I think it’s a bit formal for our rustic garden venue, but trying it on was a blast! And at least now I know what shape works best for my bod.

All in all, the experience was very interesting. I heard a lot of negative feedback about the customer service at David’s, but the sales associate who worked with me was sweet, polite, and very helpful.

Did you look for dresses at David’s? Did you like what you found?

I *heart* that dress! I saw it when we went in to look at dresses for my mom. And I think it would look great for a rustic-garden wedding. =)

That dress looks awesome on you!

I went to DB on a whim, and had a great experience. Now that I’m four bridal shop visits into my dress hunt, I can say that their service rivals that of salons that charge three times as much for their gowns.

It looks beautiful!!! I want to tell you something my mom told me about wedding gowns: Wear the dress you love. I’m having a rustic outdoor wedding and when I tried my dress on, I protested for the same reason you are. She ultimately impressed upon me the importance of wearing what makes you feel beautiful. At no other time in your life can wear a truly detailed and stunning gown and spend so much on one item of clothing, so it darn well better be the garment that makes you feel like a princess. A bride will NEVER look out of place at her own wedding!

I hope that helps! =) Best of luck!

I tried that dress on, too! I loved the way it looked, but just wasn’t the one for me though. It looks great on you, and gives you such an awesome shape!

I’ve gone to DB with about four different brides (plus myself), and sometimes they’re the nicest people in the world, and other times they’re awful. I think it just depends on when you’re in there and which consultant you get :).

I had a great experience at DB. There was no pressure from anybody at any point, which was very important to me. I am a budget bride and I know that you pay for quality–blah blah blah, but I LOVE my dress, I don’t have to feel guilty about the $ I paid for it, and honestly, I look pretty stinkin’ good it in. I’m only wearing it one day, and I don’t imagine that my guests are going to be coming up to me, feeling the fabric, and assessing the quality of the craftmanship.

I got my dress at David’s and while the associate I had was kind of crap, the manager was great and I wound up with the perfect dress to wear on Saturday when I tie the knot!

Beautiful dress! You look amazing in it. I didn’t look for bridal gowns at DB’s, but we did BM dress shop there. The shopping part wasn’t the problem…although we were largely ignored, I actually preferred it. However, the ordering process has been a nightmare…only my MOH bought her dress there and it was ordered in the wrong size, then re-ordered in the correct size and unnecessarily shipped completely across the country, then instead of coming straight back to her, it had to go to the DB warehouse and be shipped out again. Hot mess!

I love the ruffles and I love the rhinestones! I had a few “ah ha” moments at DB myself! I’m glad you had such a good shopping experience there :) It’s a beautiful dress and you look great in it! Can’t wait to see more!!

That dress looks beautiful on you! I saw that same dress when I went to DB and like you I heard all the bad customer services stories but thought i should go anyways since their prices are so affordable. However, I had the complete opposite experience. The women helping me was so patient and kind. I’m very picky so I can be a handful. She took her time and made me and my family feel like we were the only ones in the store. In the end I found “the one” at DB & I’m so excited to wear it again. Good Luck!

I love that dress on you! I agree with the other comments in that I don’t think it’s too formal either. I had a wonderful experience at Davids as well. We went on a busy Saturday, and they were understaffed. But our consultant worked her butt off to make sure we still got great service. I ended up buying the first dress I tried on (ever), but not right away. Half a dozen dresses later we came back to Davids. I didn’t have the “the one” moment until we started talking about the alterations we would do to make the dress more “me.” So even if a bunch of other women have worn that dress, there’s still so much you can do to make it your own.

I LOVE the ruffles! And I think a little fun dressy/garden juxtaposition is awesome! :) Oh! And I think I was too crazy busy in the throws of last minute wedding projects to ever tell you how excited I am that you’re a bee! So SQUEAL! I’m so excited! :)
